I love it, but I replaced the hdd with an 840 256gb ssd, and pumped the ram up to 12gb when I first got it. I've played about 4-5hrs of SimCity (30k residents!) and it's running really smoothly. The fan kicks on a bit loud though after about 20-30mins

Do let us know once you get a hold of the product, I might get it from Tapao if the seller is reliable.

The Win 8 cold boot seems plausible to me, I get something similar on my M6700, push the power button, POST (which takes a tad longer) and bam lock screen. Mine is slower on windows 7, but a clean install might just do the trick.

This one, not sure if it was really necessary, it was just an easy way to future-proof a little:

Leave a window open for some minutes (i did so with Google Chrome). Then switch to a darker background like the Windows 8 start menu or Photoshop. I was able to see the edging of the previous opened window and even my bookmark icons. Actually it doesn't matter which application you use. Just leave it open for some time. Max brightness increases that ghosting effect.

I already talked to Amazon, they will replace my notebook. I will report in some days if the new one still has the same issue. If yes, that seems to be either a manufacturing error of all first revision displays or they just used cheep IPS displays. Both wouldn't be acceptable at all.

About $200 more than what I guesstimated :-( (US release, if EVER, might be in the same ball park). I'm not willing to pay a difference of approx $700 over the toned down Bestbuy version ($1049 open box). I'd rather take a hit of 10 fps difference and pocket the $700 instead.

With haswell already shipped to certain vendors (read it over on another forum last night) and new GFX cards coming out, I, personally cannot justify $1700 but that's just me. And the bloody GFX drivers are still not 'fixed' yet by Samsung/ATI. Talk about buying a V12 racing car with the speedometer locked at 80/mph!!

Yup, it appears that only (two) are available online.
I noticed that the memory is only 8GB - as per the specs on the site.
Does that mean it has the 4GB onboard, and a 4GB stick, or that it has 8GB onboard, and an empty RAM slot ?
The specs page on the futureshop link says it has 2 RAM slots.

Does anyone know what the deal is here, or if they simply made an error in reporting the specs ?

I, too, will grudgingly hold out for a 16GB version - but not for too long !!!
The waiting is killing me, and knowing that it is now available is torture !
    :)

Have it on hold at a local store
I'm hoping that it has 16gb of ram. Most sites say that the s02ca does.

I am heading to a local futureshop right now also.
I hope they either have one on display, or that the box has the (correct) specs.

Does anyone have information on the motherboard used on the Series 7 Chronos? I'm having problems with video editing software and the support group is suggesting I install luridlogix VIRTU, which they say I should be able to get form the motherboard site. Samsung doesn't have it and Samsung support cannot tell me what motherboard they use.

Exactly my guess too. Since Best Buy already has the 17" 8870m model available for $1249 I think, the 15" 8870m should be right around there as well.

Here's something new! On Samsung's US Website, the 15" Chronos went from saying "Shop" (AKA not in stock) to "Buy Now"! It is currently in stock on their website, available to purchase directly from Samsung! I am chatting with support right now though to see if it has an 8770m or 8870m, because it says two different things on the store page.

Also, the Series 7 Ultra is in stock as well. Good signs!

I wonder if Samsung will keep the Chronos name for gray model even when Ativ book will be out, it's absolutely a no sense to have the same product with 2 different names.

It's very strange the decision to debute with a new brand (Ativ Book) before the Haswell update of this notebook, it seems in fact that Haswell and Ativ Book will be out at the same time on the market.

The 16GB versions seem disappeared or better never appeared in Europe or North America, currently only Hong Kong has this exclusive.

So what's the verdict? Yay or Nay on the 8870M?
Also, I was just on Samsung's US site and I see no mention of the NP770Z5E, just the old NP780Z5E which doesn't have the 8870M or 16GB RAM...

I just picked it up and the future shop site was wrong as this IS the version with 16 GB and the glossy touchscreen and the 8870.
I can't wait to get home and tear into it.
PS - the guys in the store did not even know about it being there - and it was the only one they had.

He said it was the 8770m, but then again it's hard to trust Samsung chat support.

Congrats to the guy who got the version we all want in Canada! Really, really jealous now! But, if it's out in Canada, that means it MUST be coming out next in the US!

Are you sure about this ? From what I get, the CA version has been lingering around for a while. The product# has been leaked a few weeks ago, it's been posted on numerous websites... But there is no trace of a S02 version anywhere on the web in the US. Not even on some remote shady sales website. It could be that BB signed an exclusivity period for the S01B during which the S02 version would not be released or even mentioned, but I find it very very odd there isn't a single clue/trace about the S02 version... I'm starting to look at other alternatives. Do you guys know of anything other than the super overprices Asus Ux51 that compares to the series 7 chronos ?

    Lucky for ya Canucks ;-).

Sadly for US, there wasn't been ANY solid announcement nor updates specifically stating that the 8870 is coming out. Even for Canada, stores/sites were already indicating the pre-sales and listed the 8870 versions for availability some weeks prior (as some reported in this thread).

In US, there has been absolutely nothing regarding the 8870 versions whatsoever!! Samsung US still has the same old version listed (BB model with 8770). Funny thing is the "features" section, it says "ATI 8870" but when you click on the "Specs", it says 8770. Epic win right there!!

And if it finally makes it way to US by May, the hardware would already be outdated by Haswell and newer Nvida GFX cards and possible competition from other brands with newer hardware and comparable price range.

Samsung displayed the US 8870M touch 16GB at CES in Las Vegas. It will come :).

EDIT: BTW, I have owned the french 8870m version for more than 3 weeks now and it still did not show up on the french samsung website. If it's not on the site, it doesn't mean it won't come.

I just sent an email to Samsung US on facebook (who had given to me the "we can't speculate on release date blah blah blah" speech earlier this week) and one to Samsung customer service. If I can't pry an answer out of them by next week, I'm giving up and will move to another product. I'll post their, what I'm already expecting, standardized PR answers here when I get them...

Dont tease me with that french version.... I'm French living in the US for the past 7 years... I'm itching !! ;) I guess the economy in France/Europe is going so badly that they released it ASAP in order to make a few bucks before everybody is out of cash and unable to buy anything more expensive than a can of tuna ! (This is a joke btw... or is it ?)

Real good news about the CA release, and i'm happy for my fellow Canadian notebookers. $1700 seems like alot but it's still ALOT cheaper than the cheapest macbook pro retina with comparable specs :p .

Personally samsung is really testing the limits of my patience, as i need a laptop urgently, however this news gives me hope that US will get a release within the next 2 weeks at most so i'm gonna hold on. The only other scenario we don't get a release is that samsung already decided the 8770 is what the US deserves.

the thing on the samsung website is still the 8770, what changed is that they are now selling it directly on their store. I really don't recommend going for the 8770, read the specs difference it's significant and overtime when more demanding games and better drivers are released you will be pleased you waited a lil bit more.

^ Well..I'm looking at the 8770 version as my primary gaming is done in my HT room on the XBox (and 120" 1080p projector screen). For me, it comes down to budget and needs.

The main reason why I'm considering the chronos is it's ultrabook like features (long battery life, slim design, good almost IPS like touch screen, good speakers and a decent gaming card) and the MAIN reason is it's affordably priced under $1300 (at least the BB version). The closet to this setup would be the new 15" Asus Zenbook at $2k!!

If laptop gaming was my thing, I'd have considered a Sager or Clevo more so than the chronos as those laptops are designed for gaming (thermal compounds, vents, keyboard, Oc'ed video cards etc).

I found a older coupon for Bestbuy (10% off on open box items) so I'll try using that on the open box 8770 version today. If BB accepts it (I've had luck with them occasionally, accepting expired coupons), then I'll pick up the 8770 version around $1k.

For me, at $1k, even if this serves me well for a year, I'll be more than happy. The 8870 will be outdated in 3 months anyway as such is the world of technology. You can wait for a whole year, buy the latest and the greatest and it's already outdated by the time you receive your first credit card bill.

I have battery bar and battery care installed and they both tell me I have battery wear of 5.79%.

Is this accurate/reliable? If so, is this normal?

I have had the laptop 2 weeks! :/

Got the i5 version today in the UK. Great screen, really superb looking. Installing hundreds of updates is a bit tideous and slow, though I can live with that as its part of Windows. Haven't tried any games yet, but it comes with the 8850m. Run a bios update as soon as I got the laptop too.

I personally have decided not to wait any longer for this to be released. With haswell right around the corner, and the top rated laptop (retina mbp) slated to be refreshed in June with lower prices, ssd and higher res screen I'll hang on for that.

Haswell really isnt anything to wait for...the performance gains over the current processors is negligible. Like 5% i think someone posted earlier?
