One thing I would say for this laptop after getting the i5 version is that the Intel Centrino 6235 has awful issues and disconnects every 30 minutes or so - there are forum posts all over the place talking about it so be warned. It looks like a driver issue but it has been going on for over 6 months. Switching off 802.11n in the drivers stops the problem but then runs the wi-fi much slower which is a pain on a 120mb cable connection. It's the only thing that lets this otherwise excellent laptop down.

ok thanks mate, but is 1099 price tag inclusive of vat or not? and availability is not an issue, i'll be picking this one up after a couple of months at least at my time of visit there...
-
That price includes VAT.
Getting a VAT refund is a real pain and, unlike most countries' sales tax systems, requires special assistance from the vendor that most UK shops don't give. The UK government info on it is here- HM Revenue & Customs: VAT refunds for visitors to the UK.
Currys don't keep the VAT though. It goes to HMRC even if an overseas visitor buys their goods. -
I've had no problems with my card. You have to get the latest update from intel's site, not SW UPDATE
-
Any links on some good ram for this, I want to Max it out

I've done that - what driver version are you showing for your Centrino 6235?
-
When I try to update it, it says that it can't install because of an older software. Did you guys encounter this issue?
By the way I'm showing version 15.6.1.20. What about you guys -
on the aluminium cover, the SAMSUNG logo it's a sticker ?
I have this lap and I wanna try to remove it.... what you think ? -
From the pictures I've seen, it's not a sticker. It's a metal piece under the aluminum lid. Just to make sure we're talking about the same thing, post a pic?
-
Woo! It's back in stock on the PC World site!
SAMSUNG Series 7 Chronos 15.6" Touchscreen Laptop - Silver Deals | Pcworld
But I'm seriously considering waiting for the Ativ Book 8.. or until all these problems are ironed out.
Is it safe to assume that since the Book 8 hasn't been announced yet and that Samsung generally takes a couple of months to release their products after announcement, that it won't be out until July-ish?? -
I'm pretty sure the ativ book 8 will be the haswell refresh
-
If that ends up being the case then I will certainly wait for that.

It says out of stock again now. Was it a glitch? Surely it hasn't come and gone already. That would be annoying.
-
Wasn't a glitch, I was gready and bought 2!
Only in stock for maybe 2hours on Sunday morning.
I've been holding off buying laptops for my wife and I since before Christmas when the Asus u500vz and this Samsung 770z5e were announced.
Been following this thread closely.

Back in stock again

Today I received the new notebook from Amazon (btw, best service ever!). But still the same ghosting issue
Not sure what to do now. I'll probably send it back to Amazon. Or maybe not... except for the display the notebook is perfect! Maybe i can live with that.
Is there any alternative which doesn't look that ugly like a ThinkPad? I would have buy a rMBP, but they also have to deal with ghosting / image retention... On the other hand, i could try and go to the Apple Store to get a Samsung display. However, for a € 2799 notebook that's still sad.
Has anyone some suggestions? -
That's so annoying that they don't have the 16GB version yet
-
Could you uptade on here when u get these laptops?
I ordered (and paid) one on the 3rd of March and still waiting . no email no nothing and they back in stock.

Just did a quick google search.. did you mean those Finnish sites?
I hope those availability dates means that it will be available on the 8th of May rather than the 5th of August!!
And the fishingtree site isn't working anymore!
-
And out of stock again. This time it disappeared part way through my order.

I don't think so. Judging from the ATIV Book 6 website leak on samsung.com, which points of soon to be release model, it confirmed the rumored specs of i7 3635qm which is Ivy Bridge. Plus all ATIV Book 8 appeared in different online store systems also have the same processor.
Looks like the ATIV Book line will appear soon with 3rd generation Ivy Bridge, I think though we will se 16GB and SSD configurations.
It would be nice if they appear with the newer haswell, after all Samsung released the Chronos with the "unreleased" 8870 graphics, assuming that Intel already shipping Haswell to manufacturers, nothing is impossible but again personally I am not confess that this is the case. We have nothing to base this scenario on... -
Curious to see this touch screen for an umprobable retention/ghosting issue, but want to be sure before ordering.
Apparently they are coming soon in France, thx Jako for the links. -
From what I gathered, it will also be the 8850M card, not the 8870M !
-
Regarding a windows 8 clean install on a new SSD - is there a tutorial already posted somewhere?
(I'd prefer a clean install, not something the re-installs all the bloat ware as well.) -
It seems that is not possible to have the 16GB model even for Ativ book 8, maybe the chance is for Germany with X03DE.
Considering the price of 880Z5E-X01FR (touch model) seems confirmed the same thing that it's happened in UK, so touchscreen and no touchscreen have practically the same price.

I stand corrected.

It's monday, mid-april and no news yet about our most anticipated samsung chronos 7 8870 US release.
If only samsung read this forum
however more news about the ativ books, it also confirms that ativ book 8 will replace chronos 7 as we expected.
More Details Leak Surrounding Samsung's ATIV Book Branding -
I returned mine for good 2 days ago. I have decided that for a product with this many "issues" though all minor, i would rather wait for haswell and the possibilty of a series 7 gpu. As far as the ghosting goes, like i said all 3 had the problem and under the exact same set of circumstances. I am inclined to beleive its a problem with the whole line. Some can deal with it, but i simply could not. For now a series 3 chrome book is holding me over
-
Although I love actually having this machine (finally), the ghosting / image persistence is noticeable enough that it bothers me not only visibly, but also just on the principle of the matter.
The bottom line is am I comfortable spending 2K and having to find ways to "baby" it so that the image retention does not become permanent.
I am currently leaning toward returning it and waiting for the next version (possibly the black one), and perhaps with the matte non - touch display.
It does seem like the whole line of displays have this issue, however I think it is entirely possible that some users don't perceive the issue because of the way they use it, or it may simply not be a deal breaker for them.
I will make my decision before the end of the week. -
Is everyone noticing a ghosting issue?
-
Does the ghosting issue occur on all these new series 7's, or just the ones with the 8870? I'm thinking of just getting the Best Buy version with the 8770, or the 17 inch with the 8870. Do either of those have the same problem?
-
Not me. I've tried to reproduce it, but I simply don't have it.
I have the 8770 Best Buy version, and I don't have a ghosting issue. -
Same here.
-
When I had the bestbuy version I did have the issue
Haven't noticed it yet on the s02ca(8870m) -
Besides the obvious color difference are there any other known differences between the chronos 7 & the ATIV?
-
Yea just picked mine up from Future Shop here in Canada. No ghosting. That mechanical 1TB hard drive has got to go though. It's like putting roller skates on a race horse.
-
No, there aren't.
-
LOL, the article says that the source is Notebookitalia, maybe it was written by someone who reads this forum. I wonder if grey model will be dismissed when Ativ book will come out.
Inviato dal mio GT-I9100 con Tapatalk 2 -
no ghosting on mine, i've had it about month now: 8870 15inch Uk model
-
I've given it some thought and I'm going to go with the Best Buy version! Here's why:
1. When an 8870 version IS released, it's going to most likely be priced at least 200 dollars more. While it may/may not come with more RAM, it's still not worth spending that much more for about a POTENTIALLY 20% graphics performance increase.
2. Now the reason I say "potentially" is because a nicer graphics card doesn't guarantee better performance necessarily. There are many factors that may limit the 8870, the main one being the 90W power supply. In a review for a Series 7 17-inch with the 8870, it was discovered that Samsung throttles the processor, and at certain points 3 of the 4 cores throttled to 1.2 Ghz when the 8870 was in use. Most likely this was done because there is too much power draw for a little 90W power supply, and also to prevent overheating. The throttling piece can be found under the Performance part of the review, found here:
Review Samsung Series 7 Chronos 770Z7E Notebook - NotebookCheck.net Reviews
Due to this, I believe that the 8770 might just be a better fit for me. I'm hoping it won't give off as much heat, or draw as much power as the 8870, so throttling will be kept to a minimum. However, I can't confirm that the 8870 takes more power or produces more heat, as I haven't looked into that yet, but for my gaming needs, the 8770 will suffice, and should be able to fully perform, given the 90W limit of the Series 7. -
I owned the BestBuy model for around 2 weeks and never noticed this issue. I loved the thing. Just figured I would wait for Haswell.
-
Just one thing, it's potentially 50% better, not 20%
3dmark for 8770m is around 2000 where as for the 8870m it's aprox 3000
