Can't quite remember the circumstances but some time ago my NC20 stopped being able to pick up any of the many wireless networks in our area which it used to and which my wife's laptop still does, including our own network.

Tried an experiment yesterday and took the NC20 up to the router room and low and behold it picked up the signal, albeit with low strength and I was able to connect to the internet.

Is anyone able to explain why this would happen? Is there any tweak I can make to my settings to restore original signal pick up or does this mean my adaptor is knackered and I need to invest in new one?

    Thanks in advance.

I would first look inside and make sure that the antenna cables are properly plugged into the sockets on the WiFi card.

Ok. So removed back to reveal the innards and attempted to understand what was what. The wireless adaptor i knew to be by Atheros and this was easily identifiable by the label but as far as i could see there were no antennae to be seen.

A gentle tug on two (mysterious to me) wires coming from the power button and tucked under the main board revealed that they were not connected to anything under the board. Looking at the two ends it became instantly apparent that they should be connected to two points on the adapter, so these are the antennae.

Connected them, booted up and whoopee, back to normal.

Now, it's at this point that I recall when this particular issue started. It was immediately after, having failed to resolve a major boot problem myself, I was forced to go to a repair shop. Clearly they sorted out the major problem but caused another by failing to reconnect the antennae.

So, spot on prognosis by John.

    Much appreciated.
