Anyone able to help a complete computer numbskull?

My much-loved Q35 has given up on me - when I power up it goes as far as the list of "users", but when I select me (administrator) option - or any of the other options - the screen goes to its background design and loads no further. A complete blank screen, waiting for icons etc etc - to get anywhere I have to do a ctrl-alt-del to logout/switch off

Now, on the last outing with the computer I had fiddled with the stat-up menu, excluding an item related to Explorer. It warned me it was unwise to go ahead, and I thought I'd cancelled - but perhaps I didn't.

What should my next move be? Grateful for any assistance ...

It looks like Windows has a problem, not the Q35 itself. Perhaps it is time to reinstall Windows.

If you have user data on the HDD that you want to back up then I can think of 2 options: (i) Boot using a Linux live CD then copy your files over to a big flash drive; or (ii) remove the HDD and put into an external USB enclosure (you need to check whether your HDD has an IDE (pin connector) or SATA (plate connector) interface and get an enclosure with the right enclosure). After that you can reinstall Windows using either the supplied CD or possibly by pressing F4 at the BIOS splash screen.
