The hard drive failed in my daughter's NP700Z5B-S01UB and I have bought an exact replacement drive...an ST1000LM024. So, I've got a laptop with a (definitely) bad drive, an exact replacement drive and the Samsung System Recovery Media disc. I've also got the Microsoft Product Key. Is that all I need to get this laptop going again? I'm a newbie to Samsung and seriously need help in trying to save this laptop. I'm not worried about saving any data on the bad drive, just want to get the thing working again. Does the System Recovery Media provide a copy of the OS (W7 Home) or do I need to buy a new copy of W7 Home? Does the System Recovery Media disc provide an opportunity to format and partition the drive? Any help and suggestions will be most gratefully received!
I'm more of a hardware guy, so removing the old drive and installing the new one is no problem. Just need help in getting the OS working again. Thanks.

The Samsung System Recovery media is a Windows installation disc that detects you have a Samsung notebook and should install without asking for a key. I don't think it is a restorable factory image complete with ready installed drivers.
I would recommend that you track down a set of drivers and samsung software and put on a flash drive so you can get the hardware set up before you connect to the internet (and get an avalanche of Windows updates). You can either get the drivers from here (which look like the original releases) or you can install Samsung's SW Update program on another computer, use the Find Model function to find your notebook and then export all the drivers and software. This should be the newest version in Samsung's database (although you will find that there are even newer versions of some of the generic drivers / software by looking under other more recent notebooks).

Thank you for the information, John. Everything went very smoothly and I was able to install Windows using the System Recovery disk. I used the drivers on the Samsung web site and all is well. My daughter will be very pleased to have her laptop back...and now without all the bloatware. Thanks again.

Thanks for the update. If you haven't done so, use Samsung's SW Update to check for newer drivers.
Tell her to watch out for Microsoft offering to install Windows 10. We aren't sure how well it will work on these older notebooks so it would be prudent to delay until we get more feedback from the wider community.

I have this specific laptop myself and setup Windows 10 on it. I did a little search to see if I could find drivers for it other than using the SW Update tool and this page wound up coming up. I personally haven't had any luck finding any that will work well with this laptop and Windows 10. I would suggest waiting it out and not installing Windows 10 on this laptop until the SW Update tool has something that will work with it. They've been slow in the past on updating the drivers to this laptop, but they will most likely eventually get it updated. I spoke with a samsung rep via chat on their website and they told me to just wait for the drivers to get updated on the SW Update tool and that it'll eventually be there, just might take a while.

Find the laptop version that offers Windows 8.1 drivers for SW update and you will be all set.

I'll have to give that a shot, but according to SW Update, it only has drivers for Windows 8 and 7, not 8.1 or 10. I'll give the Windows 8 drivers a shot tonight and report back tomorrow

try model NP700Z5C-s03mx, maybe most of that will work for you under 8.1.

Actually, I went in and ran the install for Windows 10 and it looks like they automatically setup all of the drivers for it this time. I think their recent update fixed all of the issues with drivers regarding this model of laptop now
