Hello, I am new here but I hope someone could assist me.

    A lovely Series 9 NP900X3C, Windows 8, bought January 2013.

I wanted my laptop to keep working with the lid closed (torrents and stuff), so I went to the settings and changed them accordingly (power options - choose what closing the lid does - plugged in - do nothing).
When I returned less than an hour later, I was surprised to find everything open. Everything. All the programs I have pinned to the taskbar, several folders, setting windows, pictures open and edited in paint and photoshop, icons hidden on desktop, a few metro apps too.
This was a while ago and of course since then I tried it again several times with similar results. I get all the windows and driver updates including BIOS. I check for viruses and ghosts regularly. What do?

I will gladly provide more info if needed. Thanks in advance to anyone who has a clue :)

    Hi wingspan, welcome to NBR.

Just a thought: Could it be that closing the lid actually presses on the keys, causing all kinds of spurious activity? I can see from the grease marks on my screen (different model) that it actually touches the keys when the lid is closed, despite the small rubber spacers that are meant to prevent this. I added two larger rubber spacers to my screen bezel.

Or you could use a utility such as MonitorOff (see the link in this post) to turn off the screen without closing the lid -- if nothing else to check whether the problem still occurs.

Hi, thanks for the reply! I actually did check if keys are being pressed and the screen isn't touching anything, there is a good gap there. I had a suspicion that the touch pad gets confused with the proximity of the screen but I have nothing to base it on...
I will check the lid again, and the utility you suggested, in the evening and will report back.

I also wonder whether the touchpad is the cause of the problem. I've occasionally put other objects on top of my palmrest / touchpad when the computer is running and find interesting things starting to happen.

    Fn+F5 will disable the touchpad.

I tried closing the lid with the touchpad off, and just turning off the screen with the utility, with no side effects. So it's probably the touchpad. But is there no solution to this? I mean sure I can disable it every time, but it adds a step to the routine, you know. I want my laptop to work properly.

Perhaps, by experiment, you can find the right sort of material to put over the pad that won't drive it crazy and will stop it sensing the screen. Otherwise there's no option to disable the pad when closing the screen. This type of facility is normally only provided on notebooks that use docking stations.
