I have just received a 550P7C, and am having problems booting from the internal Blu-ray drive: the drive is recognized by Windows (eg. I can read from it), but the only boot device showing in the BIOS is Windows Boot Manager, and the only device that appears as an option in the Boot tab of Windows 7 Boot Manager is the HDD.

My only idea is that there is that the BD has been set to slave, but I do not know how to check this.

Can anyone advise progressing the "slave" idea? Or does anyone have an alternative suggestion?

If you are running Windows 8 then try Charms > change PC Settings > General > Advanced Startup.

Then find the option that allows you to select the optical drive as the boot device.

If you are running Windows 7 then disable Samsung Fast Boot mode in Settings (Fn+F1). This mode disables checking for other bootable devices.

    Many thanks for the response.

The laptop came with Win 8 installed (which I've never used before), and I'll be "down-grading" to Win 7 - as soon as I can boot from the optical drive !

I've tried to follow your suggestion. If I select Startup Settings (under Advanced Options), other than "Exit and continue to Windows 8" and "Turn off your PC", the only choice is "Troubleshoot". Choosing Troubleshoot, the options are "Refresh your PC", "Reset your PC" and "Advanced Options".

Choosing Advanced Options gives 6 options:
    - System Restore
    - System Image Recovery
    - Automatic Repair
    - Command Prompt
    - UEFI Firmware Settings
    - Startup Settings

Selecting Start-up Settings and clicking on "Restart", the options are:
    - Enable debugging
    - Enable boot logging
    - Enable low resolution video
    - Enable Safe Mode
    - Enable Safe Mode with Networking
    - Enable Safe Mode with Command Prompt
    - Disable driver signature enforcement
    - Disable early launch anti-malware protection
    - Disable automatic restart after failure
    - Launch recovery environment

I am unable to find any options that would enable me to make the optical drive bootable.

    Problem solved !

It appears that the 550P7C BIOS not only checks that there is a device from which the system could boot, but also checks that the bootable device currently contains bootable media. I have not come across this before - and there was a problem with the memtest86 CD from which I was trying to boot. With the Win 7 DVD in the drive, the Blu-ray drive now appears as a boot option.
