Is there anyone out there with a samsung q210 and a ssd, who can do more than 100MB/s sequential write when testing with Chrystal Disk Mark? I can't get over 100 for some reason, even though my ssd should be able to do almost 200.

I do get some better speeds in ATTO (140MB/s), but I'm wondering what other q210 users experience.

Which SSD? Does it feature in the Tom's Hardware charts? Which filing system do you use? (NTFS / FAT32).

Which HDD access mode? Is the control listed in Device Manager under IDE ATA/ATAPI controller or SCSI and RAID controllers?

I've tried both ahci and ide. I use a aligned NTFS file system. Access mode was UDMA6 iirc. It's the Super Talent Ultra Drive GX (ME) 128GB. There's some discussion about a certain Serial Number range of these drives being slow, but I wanna rule it out it's because of the laptop.

So, I was wondering if anyone else was at all capapble of achieving over 100MB/s write on this laptop.

Another question: Has anyone been able to make it so that the fan is not constantly blowing when the power-cable is plugged in?

I have checked the bios and couldn't find any setting (including the hidden intel menu). I have set the power profile in windows 7 to balanced, performance and power save, but it didn't change anything. Even though the battery-settings are the same as the plugged-in settings. Apparently, they are still treated differently somehow.

I think the only way to make the fan quieter is to use silent mode Fn+F8 , but you notebook will run hotter.

fn+f8 just switches between the 3 power modes of windows 7 as far as I can tell. Or does it sneakily do more in the background? I thought I tried it already. Silent mode + plugged in = constantly running fan. But I'll try again to make sure.

PS: I have installed the latest bios.

As soon as I unplug the power cord, the fan goes off.

Is one not called silent mode , you should have 3 options when you press Fn+F8

Ah, got it going now. I think it also required Samsung Easy Battery Manger to be installed, although I'm not sure. When I go to Silent Mode, the fan turns off, also when plugged in.

I have Silent Mode, Normal Mode and Speed Mode. When switching between these, it switches the windows power profile to power saver, samsung optimized and high performance accordingly. But it ALSO does something else, which is setting wether the fan should run or not.

Simply changing the windows power scheme to power safer does not turn off the fan. Actually, selecting silent mode (fan goes off) and then selecting high performance power scheme doesn't make the fan go on. It only goes on when selecting normal mode or speed mode. (or when I run a cpu benchmark to get the cpu hot)

Speed Mode is only available when a program is open and focussed for some reason. Does that mean the speed is only applied to that program? Not clear to me :)

Anyway, the Samsung Easy Speedup Manager does some voodoo that makes it turn off the fan when running in silent mode. It is not related to the windows power scheme. I'd like to know what voodoo that is ;) And if it can be done without running the speedup manager.

Oh, running in Silent Mode also means Intel Speedstep doesn't work. It stays at 1600Mhz max instead of going to 2000Mhz when being heavily used.

So maybe it's possible to disable the fan, but still allow speedstep? I just need to know how the speedup manager manages to disable the fan.

Ah, I see this has already been discussed before and was closed for some reason? http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=128850

I can now confirm this myself, cause I used a OCZ Vertex 128GB and it goes far over 100MB/s write ;) The Super Talent 128GB from the XXXX Serial Number series have bad write.

I'm still pretty happy with the Q210, except I'd like it to be lighter and the screen/keyboard to fill the entire width of the machine. And I'd like to replace the optical for an extra HD or battery. But I guess that's not going to happen ;)

hi, I have Q210 notebook with latest firmware 10LE, and I really need hardware virtualization to work.

I searched on the net and found that I must enter into hidden Intel Menu in BIOS, but the only instructions I found are for BIOS v. 07LE (I checked them on mine and they does nothing)

Has anyone got a clue how to enter Intel Menu on BIOS v.10LE or how to enable hardware virtualization elsewhere ?

Securable shows Locked-off, (same as enabled-locked)
so it is possible to enable it somehow

    Strange. My Q210 has bios 09LE and a P8400 CPU. I'm running Vista 32.

The results of both tools are attached. Is strange that your Q210 reports different results.

I have P7350 CPU, but this one also supports VT, don't think this is the reason ...

I had 09LE bios and it were also locked-off, so I upgraded it to the newest one .. and still nothing. Samsung supports didn't respond :(

attached are images of securable screen and description of its 'locked off' ... maybe I misunderstand something

I did not know that you also have a "P" CPU. There are Q210 with "T" CPU and if I remember correctly not all of the "T" CPUs support VT. That was the reason posting my CPU type.

During the time I have my Q210 (I bought it in August 2008) I had more or less all available bios versions on my Q210. I had a for a long time problems with bluescreens when the Q210 changed to standby mode. (DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE *** STOP: 0x0000009F (0x00000003, 0x85420030, 0x863CCE28 )). This problem could not be solved with KB961891. The update to 09LE solved this problem finally. But I had 2 or 3 other bios versions on my Q210 before I flashed the 09LE.

My Q210 is also from August '08, originally it came with 07LE bios.
I looked into securable (all story once again) VT was locked-off, so I flashed it with 08LE ... nothing changed. Then I found solution how to enter intel bios menu but on previous bios (07LE) but had newer in the time. And after few months the 09LE bios came up, so I flashed it once again hoping VT would be enabled by default ... but it wasn't. And that way I ended with bios v. 10LE which still hasn't got VT enabled by default ...

Have you got the 07LE version somewhere available? on CD or so? I've got 2 CD's from SAMSUNG, on first there are many of strange folders and install packages, but I can't find there earlier bios.

I do not have the earlier bios versions anymore. Deleted month ago :(

But here is 07LE for download. But I do not know if it works. I did not try it.

    http://www.samsungpc.com/08/products/q210/firmware.html#firmware

Be careful this bios update is only for XP/vista!!! Sometimes bios downgrades do not work and you may brick your machine.

If you have a few days time I'd ask the Samsung support or wait for an answer.

Sorry, abit off topic. I've a Q210 (T5750, NVIDIA GeForce 9200M GS (256 MB), 320GB HDD). At the moment it has 3GB of RAM, and I want to upgrade it to 4GB.

The problem is that I can not find all Windows 7 64bit drivers and software for the Q210. I have searched through this forum, the web, and most Samsung websites.

I have installed windows 7 x64, the workaround is that I have used ndvida drivers from laptop2go, however the colours are all off. I thought I would need samsung easy display software to calibrate properly. The issue of the fan always on when charging is resolved when installing easy battery software from samsung, again this does not seem work properly under x64

I saw the following posting which provided a link for 64bit drivers, but they are not there, just windows 7 32bit. I would appreciate any info from anyone who has got Q210 working properly with Windows 7 x64 (including Samsung easy display/battery software)

Thanks and Happy New Year !

Samsung deleted the drivers fpr Windows 7 a few days after I found the Windows 7 x64 drivers at the postet location.

It may be possible that you'll have problems using 4GB with Windows 7 x64. Here are a lot issuses with Samsung Notebooks and Windows 7 x64 problems.

By the way there is no real sense to use Windows 7 x64 on a system with 4GB. To have the x64 improvements of more usable memory, 6GB and more is a good idea since the memory usage of 64 bit systems are higher than the memory usage of 32 bit systems.

samsung support did not respond, maybe now in new year they will.
I downloaded 07LE, tried to flash, but there was a massage that existing bios version is newer, and flashing will abort, so there was nothing I could do.

I guess only things last are to wait for samsung support, find somewhere way to enter intel menu or wait for bios version with unlocked VT by default :)

thanks for everything :) Happy New Year ;)

    Samsung Q210 access to processor.

Anyone know where to find out how to take this laptop apart to access the processor which I would like to upgrade?

Also the interface for DVD is SATA and looks just like that on the hard disk. I think that a second hard disk could be put in the dummy plastic filler supplied to reduce the weight by removing DVD.

There are adaptors, such as these, for putting a SATA HDD in the bay normally occupied by an optical drive. The bare optical drives that I have seen have a micro SATA connector.

What model is your optical drive?

I think the limiting factor for gaming on the Q210 is the Nvidia 9200m gs not the CPU

ah, this was my thought too but i was hoping the cpu is worth a swap in my case with the t6400...

the other prob is that obviously nobody did the change before :(

so i need to spend my money and buy a m11x some day or finally a coilover suspension for my mg zr :D

but dont get me wrong - im very pleased with the q210 and didnt bought it for gaming ;)

    thank you for the advise.
nope i didnt, but know about the gain of power. its really impressive. i already read the thread from magic penguin concerning overclocking the 9200m gs before, but im scarred of losing my warranty.

the prob is, that i actually have pixel errors (dead pixels) and want to send the notebook to the samsung support in near future...

is there really no danger in overclocking? sometimes when gaming the temperature of the graphic card is already near 65°C w/o overclocking...

Only overclock the gpu/memory when you are gaming and use stock clocks when you are not, if you go too far you will get corrupt graphics or the display driver will fail , but just re-boot your notebook and all will be back to normal.

Any time you overclock your gpu or memory you take a chance , but the danger is quite small just dont overclock too far , just a bit at a time.

hehe, im really not green in overclocking but when doing on desktops the danger is not as high as here on killing 800 euro by one click.

i think i maybe have a try in a few days. what temperature would injure the card?

Some people say 90c , but i don't like going over 80c on the GPU , but there is no temperature sensor on the memory.

You can use HWmonitor to keep an eye on your temps if you have not used it before.

Hello from happy q210 user. My year-old notebook got quite noisy because CPU temp was about 65°C (150°F) in normal state. So I thought, how hard can it be to access the fan system? And, as it turned out, it was amazingly easy!

Usually I'm clumsy with all kind of fix-it-yourself stuff, but using only single screwdriver I disassembled my notebook, cleaned it inside-out with pressured air and but it together again. Result - my old good silent q210, with temp 48°C (118°F) in normal state - plus some extra screws, as it usually ends up :) Tip for next time: mark down screw locations to some paper.

Hardest part was getting off the keyboard (use the official manual for instructions), but all the rest was just removing screws and three or four cable fixings. I think next time same cleaning will take about 15 minutes for me.

Took some pictures, unfortunately had to use not so good phone camera. Hope it helps someone.

Thanks for these. Many people eventually need to clean the fan and finding instructions is difficult.

Getting the keyboard out is usually easy, but there is a technique.
