I've had this notebook over a year now and it's still working great.
No need for a new notebook yet. I usually get a new notebook every 6 months or so too.
However, since you can't get a 9-12 cell battery for this in USA, I won't be getting another Samsung. Too bad.

There should be a utility on the desktop or in the Samsung folder of the start menu called "Easy Battery Manager". If you can't find it or have removed the Samsung tools, you can change it in the BIOS.

Thanks Davidfor, found the samsung tools and battery now charging to 100%.

I guess it is a good feature to have to save the sad life of the battery but have the option to give it a boost for occasional portable use

    Thanks again

Hey! Its me again just reporting in! Still using this laptop and no issues!! I've encoded hundreds of hours of video pushing the CPU's to the max and it works just fine! And I still have the original battery! It still holds its charge around 1.5-2 hrs so that is pretty good considering its small size.

    Anyone else still around?

My sisters R580 was in for repairs in june (18 months after purchase). Faults:

1: turned off under load (turned off as soon as it hit 80C, an problem that has been present since day 1 but my sister rarely played games until recently).
2: Left trackpad button faulty (failed after 10 months of use)
3: yellowish stain on right side of screen
4: Battery not working at all (suddenly failed after 9 months of use).

They replaced mainboard to fix shutdown issue and trackpad button issue. They replaced the screen. They replaced the battery.

Now it's better than new since it doesn't shut down anymore.
Nope didn't pay anything to get it repaired, we are well covered by consumer laws in Norway. ;)

Good to hear you got it taken care of. I guess mine is better than new because though I use my R580 daily I do not have any problems with it. Perhaps I got one that was tested before it left the manufacturer! And I thought the R580 was only sold at Best Buys in the USA. But maybe you have something different than what I have. It has a 15.4" screen with Blu-Ray and a 500gb hard drive and 4gb RAM with the 310 Nvida graphics card. What does yours have?

Wow! Mine has a i5 2.27Mhz M430 CPU! So Samsung tinkered with the hard drive, CPU, and graphics card. Interesting...I didn't know.

    I've got the same specs.
I've had mine for over 2 years now and it's working like a charm. No need for a new one yet... was temped to get the one that had 9 hours of battery time, but it didn't have as good as specs as mine. Will keep for a while more. Plus it's still the best looking notebook. I use mine 6-8 hours 6 days a week.

Just upgraded the R580 to 8GB RAM and just bought a 9-cell battery from Amazon.com. See my thread from today with the link if anyone is interested. Looks like it should last over two hours (at least) on a full charge!! WooHoo!!

I was off on two weeks vacation and just saw this. What link is that.
I was getting 2 hours with my 6 cell when it was new, so I'd think a 9 cell should give you more time?

Well, I started this thread back in 7th August 2010, 06:25 PM and after 2-1/2 year run, (the longest I ever kept a notebook) I decided to sell it while it was still worth something.
Got $500 for it and applied it for a Toshiba Qosmio this time around.

The main reason I didn't go back to Samsung again was the problem of getting a bigger battery for it in the USA was impossible and mentioned several times in previous posts.
Too bad as otherwise, Samsung makes a fantastic notebook. I have several Samsung monitors and HDTV's around the house, one being a 60" HDTV 3D. Also have a Samsung Note II.
Samsung makes good stuff, but falls short with their notebooks as when I checked BB, they still don't have the bigger batteries for them.... the deal breaker!

    pages: 12 / Replies: 114 / Views: 25,697 was a nice run too. :)

So long here, C'ya on the Toshiba side here.

Well, I'm back!!! I had the
    Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q830
    i7 - 8GB memory - 128GB SSD - 500GB HD 7200
    NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250M
    18.4” diagonal widescreen TruBrite

for one year. Too big to take anywhere, so looking for something smaller with power.

    I sold it for $850

Reason I sold the Toshiba was I decided I needed something more portable for my photography as that Oosmio is a monster. I like to have a notebook to check the photos I take in the field as what you see on the cameras LCD is not large enough to see flaws or if it is truly sharp enough. Don't want to get all the way back home to go " Whoops!" Also I will use the Notebook or Tab 3 to show clients my work / websites / slideshow etc.

    This is what I got:
    Samsung Ultrabook 13" Series 5 NP540U3C-A03UB Touch-Screen Laptop,
    Core i5-3317U, DDR3 8GB Memory, 500GB HDD + 24GB ExpressCache

Perfect for photography! It gets between 5-6.5 hours a battery, very light and compact @ 3.73 lbs.,
Loaded with Adobe CS6 Masters Collection and other photography programs.

This is what I use the Samsung Ultra notebook, Tab3 & S3 for:

That Samsung R580 is still the best looking notebook I've ever seen. However, my favorite notebook of them all is still the Dell XPS from 6 years ago that I customized:

This 2010 Samsung R580 laptop is still my all time favorite I've ever owned and I've owned at least 10 laptops since then. My mechanic bought that from me five years ago and uses it every day and it still performs flawlessly. That is 7 years of service. Pretty impressive!

That is the reason I keep going back to Samsung... my fourth now because they are so reliable. And fine looking machines. My current Samsung is the ATIV Book 6 NP680Z5E-X01US
That R580 is still the best looking laptop from the factory.
