I think you should try the laptop out because I have no problems with online gaming. Been playing Diablo 3 on it.

I can second this, have had no issues with WiFi at all. I travel around all the time connecting to different APs and not once have I had an issue. I game a lot and have not had lag at all. Wonder if it is different batches that have the issue.

I seriously doubt Samsung intended anyone to boot off of the ExpressCache drive.

    Hello

If someone want to assign the delete key to "delete something", when the Fn is locked, and not to eject the disc, you can do that by using a software called SharpKeys.
I assign the delete key and the numpad 0 to do what they are soppose to do when the Fn is locked.
You can find a small tutorial for it were.

Just so you know, the Envy 17 has the same Intel Wireless card as the Samsung (Intel 6235), but the Wireless performance is excellent on the Envy, whereas it was atrocious on the Samsung Series 7.

The biggest difference between these two machines in terms of Wi-Fi is the antenna placement.

I agree, like I said in an earlier post the antennas are positioned for design so its a fail. Not much can be done, maybe a driver or software update can help a bit on its functioning but not by much, maybe a 25% increase.

MacHater, just for the sake of knowing, what driver version is the Envy 17 using for this card? The driver version on here is 15.0.0.75 but intel website has a newer version 15.1.1, although samsung hasn't made there version of it.

As a matter of interest, where is the antennae placement in the Z7C? Are the along the back edge of the chassis as in the Series 9? I have found that the WiFi performance in my NP900X4C (Ivy Bridge with Intel 6235 WiFi) is worse than in the NP900X3B (Sandy Bridge with Intel 6230 WiFi). Superficially the antennae units look very similar.

I used 15.1.1 from Intel web site on both the Samsung laptop and HP Envy. So, same card and same driver version.

    Hello everybody

I need a laptop fo CAD + 3ds max works + some gaming(not too much)
I'm choosing between 2 laptops right now Samsung 700z7c and Asus N76Vz
I examined both in the shop and here are my thoughts:

    Samsung:

+Really nice thin design!, light for 17inch laptop
    +Good display
    +Nice keybord and trackpad
    + long battery life

-fan grills are closed by display, that's pretty odd
    - plastic case has gaps with aluminim parts. I suppose that plastic edges will loose thair paint soon
    - hard access to SSD, and I think fan cleanning will be an issue
    - wifi issues that i found in this thread
    - display angles seemed a bit narrow for me( but may be i'm wrong)
-heating and throttling issues (based on noteboockcheck)

    Asus:

    + Sturdy case
    + good display
+ good temeraters under load (based on notebookcheck)
    + 2year warranty

    -Apple-like but bulky design
    - heavy relativly to Samsung
    - Low battery life

All in all Samsung has many pros but also has many issues to my mind.
While Asus has not so strong features as Samsung but seems to have less cons

The difference in graffic cards is not critical for me at all.
The critical thing is how comfortable it will be working in CAD and 3dmax software on both of these laptops where performance of CPU is in the 1st place.
Heating would be a big issue for me. And what I mostly afraid of is Sumsung wil not go right with it.
I really liked Samsung 700z better than Asus and if I haven't done a big resurch before I went to see it in real life I would definitely buy it. But now I afraid it'll dissapoint me in everyday use)

I would be happy to hear your advices based on your experiense

PS excuse me for my English)

When I contacted Samsung UK mid last month they said they had no plans to release any variant of the np700z7c series in the UK sadly. I too considered getting a German model and maybe getting some key spares but it's a bit too much really. Looking at the Dell XPS 15 now instead but I'd really prefer a 17".

Which version have of the 7C do you have? Is it the -S01US? Can anyone say whether this problem has been fixed in the -S03US?

Is there the same problem with the 15" little brother, the NP700Z5C?

Have you thought about exchanging the Samsung and trying another one? There may be some percentage of lemons in terms of this antenna problem. The Samsung truly is a light lighter in weight than the Envy.

As far as I can tell they run alongside one of the fans and near the exhaust vents, all of which are complete fails. :(

Just like there are no sales on black friday. No one said it was a sure thing.

Well, I'm testing the S01US but the S03US is exactly the same with crappier gpu(i.e. less memory) and smaller/faster HD, nothing is redesigned just lower specs. I travel a lot so I've been stopping at each bestbuy(about 20) and so far every series 7 I've tried have the same crappy wifi. They all have that issue, even the few that say they have no problem is because they don't use it but in one place mainly at home but if you travel or use it at coffee shops, hotels, etc, then forget it. You will cry like a baby. I'm using the internet right now at a McDonalds about 100 ft away and it could see it with 1 bar but not connect had to use my micro usb adapter, yet my Acer, android, iphone are connected fine.

Anyway, its sad when this Amazon.com: Netgear G54/N150 Wireless USB Micro Adapter (WNA1000M): Electronics works better than the internal wifi. I've had that little micro usb wifi card to use in one of my old laptops, well it works on the sammy. Sad, just sad, something so small works better which I shouldn't have to use. I'm still going to switch out the card and see about some more antennas.

I'm using CAD and doing games. It gets loud when gaming but not when using CAD, everything runs very good then. Also, I don't really see the problem with the wi-fi, maybe I'm just lucky?
After a month of use, I also don't see problems in the design of the case, still looks good. Maybe I'm not so critical and just use it.

I changed the the HDD to SSD, now it runs even more smoother

I would still prefer the Sams to the Asus :D

It's really sad indeed, i thought it was going to be the laptops of my dream but with the wifi problem i really dont know if i shoudl buy it or not anymore... I thought about installing a usb wifi card, its small it shouldnt be a problem but is the speed good? is it a good fix or just a small work around that doesnt work really well ?

For those in the UK, is this a glimmer of hope??

Just looking for more alternatives in light of the UK model uncertainty. What about the Sony Vaio E Series 17.3"?
Just had a look at the Sony website, a black version with backlit keyboard, blu ray writer, 1920x1080 screen, i7-3612qm and 2GB ATI video card is approx £750.
Possibly half the price of the Chronos 17.3 - how does it compare? Kind of looks similar with the recessed keyboard tray, thin bezel. Not quite as thin...
Can't find any relevant reviews though. Is it going to be cheaply made, noisy? Battery life only quoted at 3.5 hours but still.

Why not? It boots much faster and all the standard functions are more optimized, like copying files and the task manager

An 200Gb disk should be (at least) 200.000.000.000bytes, or 195.312.500Kb, or 190734Mb or 186,265Gb actual capacity.

    So yes. ;)

I'm just concerned of the samsung easy software not playing nice w/ windows 8.. and the express cache might get nerfed..

Also being that I use my sammy for gaming, I wonder if I should wait a couple of months post release..

Sony had F series 16.4" laptops, but they have discontinued it like Macbook, XPS 17 etc.

You can get Sandy Bridge versions at ebay etc

Sure, just go to sony.co.uk and select the Vaio E series, you can choose 17 inch. Only the black version can have a backlit keyboard, you can then add blu ray reader or writer, 1080 screen, ivy bridge i7, 1 or 2GB video when you customise it.

Has a curvey look to the front too, rather than the 'sharp' palm rest of the Sammy. (6% cashback with topcashback too)

These look like Ivy Bridge type specs to me, and this post is July 5th. Just where & when did this laptop show up? When was it discontinued? I’m curious. I’ve seen the 16.3’s on Amazon & elsewhere, just not up to these specs. I am more than familiar with Sony’s releasing a bunch of new models & then ‘disappearing’ a few of them, and they have a huge new model roll-out in August w/Ivy Bridge & better specs, but they are not here yet.

I am in the market for a new laptop, & am still doing my due diligence. The current contenders are the Samsung S01US, & S03US, the Vizio 15’s, & any Vaio with similar or better specs. I have a Vaio and I love it, but I now have a history with Sony & more than a few problems w/Sony corporate policies, support, pricing, restrictive interfacing & copyright management issues. So, what’s next? It’s a very interesting time to be in the market for a new laptop…

After reading the last 10 pages or so I am now considering cancelling my Amazon order for the S03US and buying an HP ENVY 17. I have been waiting weeks for the Samsung and the ENVY is the same price with free 2 day shipping. The wifi issue doesn't concern me as much as the posts regarding the heat buildup and the backlight bleed on the screen because of it. That just sounds like the potential for the LCD to fail over time.

    I have a few questions:
    1. The screen. Everyone says the screen on the Samsung is better.
Is the HP usable outdoors or near windows since it is glossy?
    2. The graphics. I really wanted the Nvidia GT 650M for Optimus.
How good is the AMD 7850M? How is the battery life on the ENVY?
    3. The inputs.
How do the keyboard and trackpad compare?
    4. The heat and noise.
How does the HP compare for thermals and quietness?
    5. Expandability.
Does the HP have a second HDD bay?

Oh yeah, the HP has Blu-Ray also.

    Any help would be appreciated.

1: Can't really comment on that, but in general glossy screens are horrible outdoor/near windows, even with AG coating. And yes the samsung screen is awesome.
2: The HD7850M is slightly faster than GT650M, it also supports graphic switching in the form of AMD enduro, but this is so far very poorly implemented compared to optimus, newer drivers might solve that. The models with 3D screen doesn't support switching though, keep that in mind.
3: The samsung keyboard is very good and so is the trackpad when you have got used to it. The HP keyboard I'd rate a notch below (just tried for a short few mins), can't really comment on HP trackpad.
4: No idea really, except some user reviews. Seems about equal, but keyboard gets less hot on the HP.
5: yes, but you need to order an HDD cage since that is not included. Probably available from spare part dealers or ebay.

Thats what it is, UK models, got it, after looking around found one on the Sony Canada site as well. Not with the Quad core CPU and not custom configurable but it is a 17. Good call-out..
No 17's on the Sony Japan site tho, Odd..

Hi, NP700Z5C-S01US owner chiming in here. :) Anyway, I wanted to put a plug in for wiping and reinstalling Windows. In particular, I noticed that my CPU idle temps were ~60C before wiping, and ~40C afterward. Not sure what I eliminated that made a difference, but a clue: before wiping, I noticed that the system tray icon for Optimus kept glowing (kind of a rainbow color, right?) even though when I clicked on the icon, no app showed up. Also, no GPU usage was showing up. But for whatever reason, after reinstalling Win 7 that icon stays black (as it should) and the machine overall is much cooler.

Also, not sure what your options are, but I used the built-in backup app to create a disk with all the drivers, and then used the same disk to restore all the basic functions after wiping. (I think you can also access the same backup/recovery system with F4 during boot....?) I just went down the list in order as I reinstalled them!

All the settings are under control panel > touchpad/mouse or you may have a touchpad icon running in your tray for the settings , they all point to the crappy settings that look like they were made by a first year college student, sigh. You can't even change the sensitivity of the pad, you can only disable tapping, etc. Image of the only settings below/worst lack of touchpad settings I have ever seen in the past 10 years. WYSIWYG.
