I have the np940x3g with windows 8, the laptop has a touch screen and is overall pretty sleek and powerful but i really, really hate windows 8
Does anyone here suggest installing windows 7 on it?
Will i still be able to scroll through websites and pdfs using the touch screen? Or is the laptop just not good for windows 7?

Move over mouse: When you pair Windows 7 with a touchscreen PC, you can browse online newspapers, flick through photo albums, and shuffle files and folders—using nothing but your fingers.
Limited one-finger touch capability has been available in Windows for years. But Windows 7 is the first to fully embrace multitouch technology. Need to zoom in on something? Place two fingers on the screen of a multitouch-compatible PC and spread them apart. To right‑click a file, touch it with one finger and tap the screen with a second.
Windows Touch—available only in the Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate editions of Windows 7—is fun to learn and easy to use. The Start menu and taskbar now sport larger, fingertip-friendly icons. All your favorite Windows 7 programs are also touch-ready. You can even finger-paint in Paint!

What's the Microsoft Touch Pack for Windows 7? - Windows Help
The Touch Pack comes preinstalled on some multitouch PCs running Windows 7, but it isn't included in Windows 7. The Touch Pack is available for download from the Microsoft Download Center.

I've installed Win7 on my ATIV Book 9 Plus and much prefer it to Win8.
Yes you can use the touchscreen to scroll though sites but it's not nearly as natural as using the trackpad IMO. -
Thank you for the replies
So how does it work do I just format and install windows 7 on it and download all the Samsung drivers that are on there website?
Or is there another way I am suppose to do it? Will all the drivers they have on the Samsung system software update program work with the windows 7 ? Thank you
Will the touchscreen be as responsive as it is on windows 8??
just need some feedback im scared it wont be as good... please let me know thank you! -
You should use the Samsung SW Update software to download all the drivers in advance.
You put in the model of laptop then you can choose between Win7, Win8 and Win8.1 and it'll give you all the necessary drivers to download. It'll even chuck in a batch installer too.
You also need to play around with the BIOS settings to be able to install Win7, change it away from UEFI.
I don't remember the exact details though, I followed a guide on the Samsung site.
Can't really give you a comparison on the touchscreen as I've never really used in on either version of Windows - it's an incidental feature for me, not something I bought the laptop for. -
As mentioned by Step666, disabling UEFI generally yields better results with Win7 on Samsung laptops, but unfortunately that requires wiping and converting your disk to a different partition style before installing Windows. The post here describes general considerations for downgrading Samsung Win8.x laptops to Win7.
If you decide to do it, the install guide here is written exactly for your situation, including steps to convert the disk and change your BIOS settings. It looks long because it covers many models, but it shouldn't be hard to follow.
Note: Do NOT follow the guides on the first page of that thread (they're for different models and a different situation). The guide you want to use is post #40 (again here).
You actually don't have to save drivers first (other than WiFi driver as described in the guide). SW Update will automatically download and install drivers for your model and the OS on which it is installed -- in the correct order and with minimal booting. That said, saving the drivers first can be practical if you will install several times (say to test different scenarios). -
I finally got my laptop to downgrade to windows 7, my problem is I don't know what are the correct drivers I need and installed the same drivers that came with the windows 8 version
now nothing works, the fn keys don't do anything, my wireless is catching signals but it wont connect to any of them even if I put in the correct password...
has anyone else done this? I cant seem to find any good drivers that are compatible with this laptop and windows 7 and I would really appreciate some help!!
thank you so much! -
Hey guys
Sorry for another post, was not sure how to edit previous ones. I have a question about recovery partitions. When I tried downgrading from windows 8 to windows 7, I deleted every partition possible on my laptop. Now im back on Windows 8.1 and I am not sure if windows automatically created new partitions for me for recovery or if I was suppose to create them myself.
The thing is, when I downgraded into windows 7 I deleted all the partitions but when I installed windows 8.1 on top of windows 7 it did not ask me where to install or what partitions to create so I have no idea what is going on. Im on windows 8.1 now and I have no clue if I have a recovery partition or what I just did to this poor laptop. -
There is no limit on how many posts you can make, so don't worry about that. I did take the liberty, though, of moving your two new threads in here, since they are about the same Win7 installation which we already discussed here yesterday.
In the future, you can just click Reply or Reply With Quote to add a new post to a thread. And you can click Edit Post to edit existing posts you have made.
Please study my last response again (just a few posts up). When you install Win7, you want to follow the exact steps in the guide I linked for you there. It tells you how to convert your disk (SSD), set your BIOS, and which drivers to install. It should not be difficult if you follow the advice.
As for your Recovery, that is lost when you wipe the disk or delete its partitions -- as heavily stressed in the two posts I linked. If you made the recommended factory image backup on a USB stick, you can just boot that, and it will restore your disk to factory state, including working Recovery. Reset your BIOS settings to default first, except Fast BIOS/Fast Boot which should be disabled in order to boot the USB.
If you did NOT make Recovery backups there is nothing you can do to get Recovery back. If you call Samsung support, you may be able to persuade them to send you a Recovery disc -- which does not contain Recovery (despite its name) but just a plain Windows 8 or 8.1. And it sounds like you already have Win8.1 disc. -
As I said before, it provides you with a complete set of drivers for the laptop. -
I have no read the guide yet because I decided to just install windows 8, but I have a problem that I was wondering maybe you can help me out with. Im running windows 8.1 now and everything is fine, however when I go into bios and try setting back all the settings to default my computer wont restart properly. I would get an error that sais: " All boot options are tried. Press F4 to recover with factory image using recovery or any other keys for next boot iteration"
If I am back in windows 8.1 why cant I use the default bios settings? The only way for me to get back into windows 8.1 is if I disable fast boot and change some other bios setting. otherwise it wont let me use the default bios settings...why is that? thanks again for all the help you guys have been giving me I really appreciate it. -
You may have installed Win8.1 while UEFI was disabled (in preparation for installing Win7). When you restore BIOS settings, UEFI is re-enabled, and the system can no longer boot. Changing UEFI mode always requires re-installing Windows.
Lots of people who have successfully installed Windows 7 or XP in the past are caught by surprise that things are not as simple anymore. You really want to read the background in this post. -
Wow i dont know if its worth formatting again to run in UEFI i feel like my head is going to explode with all these instructions and how to"s. I was thinking of just sending it back to Samsung again and have them redo everything...
They sent me a recovery disc can that help make my life easier? The problem is i have a usb drive no disc tray on the laptop, i do own another conputer though but i still dont know if i can restore everything the way it came out of the factory if i have the recoery disc? -
I understand. If you installed Win8.1 in non-UEFI mode, and all is working fine, I would just leave it at that. In BIOS, disable SecureBoot and set OS Mode Selection=CSM OS, and you're done (assuming that was how you installed Windows).
The disc from Samsung is just a Windows disc, nothing that will help with this. -
One last question... Lets say I get a virus one day and I want to do a recovery point where I don't have to format and install all the apps and programs and everything I have, how do I go about doing that? I have a blank USB flash and I just want to make a backup in case something goes wrong in windows. I absolutely hate formatting and I just want to make sure its possible to do a recovery or something. Thanks again.
P.S. Now that I erased my recovery partition is it still possible? -

Your alternative is to get a separate backup software such as Acronis TrueImage (which will cost a little money) so first try this free Paragon software. I've used the former but not the latter. Once you've made a backup then you want to try the restore to make that works as well. Creating a bootable flash drive and persuading your computer to boot from it can sometimes be a little challenging (you will need to disable the fast boot option in the BIOS because it skips checking for bootable USB devices).

Lets say I want to make everything like it was when it came out of the box...How would I go about doing that? Is it possible for me to do it or do I have to send it back to Samsung?
-
As stated above, your best option is to create a new Windows installation, then use partition imaging tools to back it up. Otherwise Samsung can re-image the drive for you -- usually for a small fee. -
not sure if my last reply was sent but my question was , what if I had the original recovery disc for this laptop would I be able to do it than? I mean this laptop does not have an optical disc tray but I was thinking maybe I can transfer it onto usb?
-
I see. Samsung's "Recovery disc" is just a Windows OEM disc, it doesn't contain Samsung Recovery software. Even if you had an external DVD drive, it would not let you re-create Recovery. This happens frequently, and we get the question all the time. There are some scenarios where we can help users salvage a broken Recovery or restore one from a backup, but if it's been deleted from the disk and there is no backup, it is not feasible.
-
But i don't get why it isn't possible to format and have windows create a separate partition for recovery... shouldn't windows 8 have that option?
I had another question about something different...
I purchased this laptop on eBay, i want to test the battery and make sure it works as long as it should. I feel like the battery dies faster than advertised... how can i test it? -
Samsung Recovery Solution is Samsung software, not part of Windows. You need those tools we discussed to re-create Samsung Recovery on a disk. But once Recovery is gone, you can no longer create those tools.
You are right, Windows has some imaging and Recovery features of its own. I am no expect on those, so I cannot help you there. If you don't get an answer here, I suggest you re-post the question in our Windows OS and Software forum. But please wait 24 hours so you don't crosspost.
