DIED!! I only got it in July! I swear it's like HP all over again! LOL And Samsung won't send you a free box and no free shipping/handling to send unlike HP. Hope my baby comes thru. The power switch fizzled and won't turn on.

    :(

I always make a point of keeping the packaging for any electronic equipment until after the warranty period has expired.

Wouldn't be hilarious if I sent it back in an HP box? Last time I had a laptop died on me was when it wasn't even a month old.. a Compaq. Now to find a suitable box.. really inconvenient!!

Mine R780 box is sitting in the corner of the room. I haven't found a bag that I like yet so it gets used when we pack up to visit the in-laws.

The box looks smart but I wouldn't want to advertise it moving about except for a family function like yours.

I used a travel bag when I went to Vegas a few weeks ago. While it isn't perfect it did the job! I did find a pretty good one I liked at Wal Mart a couple of months ago but I figure I'd rarely use it and it wasn't worth clutering up my closet with some more stuff. I really need to do some house-cleaning (toss or sell stuff) with my computer/electronic stuff.

Went to Office Depot and found a suitable box and it only costs $1.90. Sent it insured just in case. The fix and return shipping is free. I hope they don't claim that I abused it and wants money to repair it. I heard a muted fizzle sound when I pressed the power button and the lights stopped. Hope it didn't affect my SSD and 8gb RAM. I had to reinstall all the original parts I replaced... HD/RAM. Also had to delete all personal info on the HDD.

Out of curiousity, how did you delete all your personal info on the HDD if your laptop died?

I placed the drive on an external enclosure and deleted all personal informations after I copied it to another computer.

Kinda figured but thought I would ask! Thanks!

If you don't mind, keep us informed how the exchange goes. Hopefully they provide you a brand new computer and not a fixed or refurb job.

Will do. I also took pictures of it prior to delivery in case they claim the laptop was all messed up when they received it. Hopefully they won't reformat the HDD since I had a lot of programs on it. If they did I can always reclone it.

Just got an email telling me they're sending back the laptop. No mention of what was repaired though Hopefully it'll say on the invoice.

Well the laptop came today and it works. According to the invoice the motherboard was replaced. The only complaint I have is that there's minute scratches on the bezel surrounding the screen.

Great that it got fixed, sucks that it was scratched! I've had that happen to a product I sent in for repair too and it worked fine but scratched to hell at the same time! :(

I don't understand why they didn't place clear plastic over the screen and bezel to protect the whole prior to taking it off. Could also be that they used a stiff cloth to wipe the bezel and scratched it. I might use black shoe polish to make it look a little better or maybe use 'ice' car wax. Will experiment to see which one looks better. Hope the lacquer finish will hold up.

I e-mailed Samsung about the scratches and told me to call the repair center. I didn't want to bother sending it back because it may come back even worse. Black shoe polish helped minimize the scratches. Just make sure it doesn't get in the screen. So far the laptop is working fine.

They never say... you have to be persistent and ask. (I see you were lucky with yours. A plus for Samsung) I've had that happen with Dell, HP & Gateway in the past. Strange too because if you have your car repaired they always give you an itemized list of what was done. Not on computers...

Also I took pictures of the notebooks before sending them in too as a couple times I got them back with scratches on the lid etc. Got the lid replace twice too as I had proof prior to shipping them in. I also always save my original box in case I have to ship it back or if I sell the notebook which I tend to do once a year.

I haven't any problems with Samsung yet so I'm curious how their service is overall.

The only negative is you have to send the laptop for repair at your own expense. HP will send you a prepaid box.

Yes, that is nice as I had to send mine in FOUR times in a 2 month span. The last time was to replace the lid that they scratched up.
Then I sold it and never bought another HP since. I was tired of problems with HP.
I've gotten a Dell XPS, and two Gateways since then.

Samsung is apparently doing away with the pattern outside finish laptops as evidence on their website. They are all solid colors and lots of them now. I wonder if the R580 and others like it can be determined to have a unique pattern that can be identified when getting repaired. If they appear to scratch it maybe its a returned replacement part and not the original. Anything to this wave pattern?

Good thing I had Body Armor on the lid to protect it from scratches. My friend's laptop screen came back scratched from HP and had to send it back.

Thats a good idea... if I ever have to send mine in again, I'll put body armor or something like that on it.

When I posted my review on the Samsung web site for motherboard failure they didn't post it! I guess they only want to hear the good side.
