Hey guys, so we have a Samsung Series 5 boost from last year in our house and I was just wondering if anyone has any experience adding an optibay to it, as I would like to add more storage to this machine. Not exactly sure what size optibay to get I guess.

    Thanks!

If you are proposing to replace an optical drive with a hard drive then this thread will be relevant.

Otherwise, you can replace the hard drive with one of higher capacity.

If you want more specific advice could you provide a link to your specific model.

Thank you for your help John, the laptop model is: NT550P5CS75L

It is a Korean model of the Samsung Series 5 Boost.

    Thank you so much.

Thank you for the extra information.

The NTP550P5C should be the Samsung as the NP550P5C (NT is the prefix for Korean models) so I've looked at the manual here which shows an optional optical drive.

If you already have an optical drive then replacement by a hard drive caddy should be straightforward and this thread should provide guidance.

If there is no existing optical drive then you will first need to take the bottom off the notebook to check if the optical drive connector is present (Samsung have a bad habit of saving a few cents in the production by leaving off parts that aren't essential). If the connector is present then a standard caddy such as this should work. Optical drives use a standard size in plan and have three thicknesses (12.5, 9.5 and 7mm) so the caddies use the same standard sizes. The 9.5mm caddy I linked to should work. There are also 12.5mm caddies which might be too thick. Most notebook hard drives are 9.5mm thick although an increasing proportion are 7mm (which will also fit in a bay designed for 9.5mm).

    Hello John,

Thanks for the insight. I just got on the phone with a Samsung technician, but the technician says that the optical drive's thickness is 12.7mm. Are all optical drives that thick? And by your three thicknesses, are those the harddrive/SSD thicknesses?

    Thanks!

One of these caddies would be a comfortable fit in the bay. The 9.5mm caddy would also fit but might move around (but you could put in some packing.

7mm and 9.5mm HDDs would fit into the 9.5mm caddy while these plus 12.5mm HDDs (if you can find any) would fit into the 12.5mm caddy. The connector and screw holes are all in standard locations on the bottom part of the HDDs.

    Hey John,

So I got this one. It should work the same, right?

    Thanks

It should work provided Samsung informed you correctly about the height of the bay.

Did you look inside your computer to make sure that the connector was present?

Hmm.. what do you mean by whether the connector was present or not?

If your computer currently has an empty space where the optical drive would be, if present, then you want to be sure that the socket that the ODD (or HDD caddy) would plug into is actually present.

See my second post in this thread.

Yes. If you already have an optical drive then we know the connector is present.

The User Guide indicated that the optical drive was optional so they may have left it out of some versions of your notebook.
