    What is the error code?

Installed any new drivers, software or made hardware changes?

Any new usb devices connected or recently installed ?

Could be a problem with a faulty driver.

On boot press F8. This will let you start in safe mode. From there try doing a system restore.

Do you have a Live Linux ?
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_live_cd

Try to get one and boot Linux from it to save your data.
    I would then reinstall Vista.

It does yes. Atleast with default settings. I think it does so once or twice a week and before installing new programs.

Try getting into safe mode. If that doesnt work you will need to reinstall Vista.

You can reinstall Vista without losing your data. However it is not very clean. You can just delete the Windows folder and install over the old. Then your files will still be on the hard drive but you will have alot of broken program folders all over the place.

I wouldn´t recommend that. As you say you´ll get plenty of other errors by doing that.

Let´s see first if safe mode works at all.

btw which notebook type are we talking about ?

One last try: did you unplug all the USB ports and PCMCIA card and so on from the laptop? take everything out that you can. Unplug the network cable and turn the wifi switch to off. But leave it pluged into the AC power. Then try safe mode again.

I woudnt recommend what I said above too. However if you dont have a Linux live cd or dont want to use Linux it might be the only way to get to your data.

You will need to reinstall Vista or XP. You can do what I said above first. Tell the installer not to format but only delete the Windows folder. You can then backup your files. If you are using XP you will find the My document folder under:
    C:\Documents and Settings\[old user name]\My Documents

make backups of everything you need. Then reformat C: and install Windows again.

edit:*** 2 partitions? Does XP work?

This error message happens when your computer goes into hibernate mode and comes out of it. Disable your hibernate function and your should be cured. As for remaining in the blue screen, try rebooting with the windows disc and re-installing your O/S. This is a bug microsoft needs to work on. Unless your vista is an upgrade, you will more than likely lose your files.

Boot using XP Home then retrieve your files. They should be in a folder called Users unless you have put them elsewhere.

I found that when I was re-installing the vista business upgrade it did not delete anything but it put the old Windows and Program files in renamed folders. I think it left the user files where they were.

As a matter of policy from past experience I create additional partitions for all my own files.

I'm afraid this info is based on XP but I would imagine that the system restore functionality would be very much the same? If so...

There should be restore points set automatically. hopefully you'll be able to see recent ones and chose the latest one then if that doesn't work choose the one before that.. sometimes it will take a couple of tries to get it going.

    good luck!

I would see how it runs without reinstalling anything. This will reveal whether this was a temporary glitch or whether it happens again.

By the way, I've got Vista and XP happily co-existing on my Q35 and I use hibernation all the time without any problems.
