Hi, I've just picked up myself a q30 in the UK on ebay. Whilst it's a great machine, it's not silent as I was led to believe it would be. There is a humming/whirring sound that is present when the machine is on. I assume it to be the hard drive.

Is this how it should sound, or do I have a faulty unit. Its not majorly intrusive, but is audible in a quietish room.

According to the press release, the machine does not have a fan. So I guess it must be silent.

And q30+ users in Korea say that it gets quite hot when it is in use for some time.

I hope this answers your question.

The reviews point to the noise level of dell x1 (which is very similar to q30)
at 17-19 dB. A typical HDD has 22dB.

It is not unsusual that you can hear some sounds from the laptop if you are in absolutely silent room.

Hmmmm, no, I'm familiar with laptops, fans and hard drives spinning up. This is a constant audible whir. It's definately the hard drive as it spins down after 3 minutes, quite high pitched.

I posted previously about a noisy X50 and this looks the same as my problem. The fan on the X50 is quiet if your not doing anything, and still acceptable when it speeds up, but the hard disc is more noticeble in a quiet room, especially as it is located near the front and under your ears rather than on the side. Its the same constant whirring until it spins down.

Are Samsung using cheap noisy hard discs? Has anyone replaced the HD with higher spec versions, or maybe lower spec, lower speed models which are quieter? The location of the speaker right on top of the HD probably doesn't help
