Has anybody successfully got the display working on windows 7 64bit(7100). everything works until i try to install the correct drivers then it just reboots constantly.

Did you find the 64-bit versions of the Samsung software?
John -
Yes, I have Windows 7 installed properly. You do not need to install the Samsung utilities to make it work. What else did you install?
-
Its an absolutley vanilla install.
ran windows update tried driver from there (nvidia 9200), restart then it will only reboot into safe mode.
downloaded windows 7 x64 drivers from nvidia 185.85 same thing on restarting constatnly tries to repair can only boot into safe mode and use stndard vga.
downloaded vista64 bit drivers from samsung site (r610) still no joy.
using win 7 32bit to write this everything is just dandy.ve

I am having this same problem, either when I install them from Windows Update, or when I install the drivers from the Nvidia site.
I am also having the problem of when I try and change the brightness (Fn + Up / Dn) or turn off the backlighting (Fn + F5) the laptop reboots?
Anyone have any ideas? -
Although I have a R610, I've got the same problem with Win7. All installs fine until the graphic drivers go in - then I'm in cycling reboot hell. Tried both Samsungs Vista x64 drivers and Nvidias beta mobile drivers.
I mailed Samsung to see what they are doing about Win7 and I quote...
"[Solution]
We currentlydo not have the support for the Windows 7 Operating System Drivers.
Some of the Vista 32 bit driver as you have mentioned do work.
At thecurrent moment we do not have an exact release date so please keep checking back our website in the meantime for further releases."
EDIT:
This seems to be an x64 bit issue, as the samsung desktop x64 software is very buggy too!!! Looks like x32 for now
Hey ho... -
StuMcBill, i am very interested in your problem.
Assuming you are running 4GB in a 2x2GB config, can you run with only 2GB of memory, so take out a stick.
Does FN + brightness up / down / backlight still crash under 64 bit?
Does the other stability issues remain after this?
Thanks for your time. -
I have had no problems since I done this, hopefully its just an incompatibility with the Nvidia drivers, Windows 7 and Easy Display Manager that will be fixed in the future. -
I have my doubts that it is a compatibility issue.
Your model laptop has the same motherboard chipset as the r510 and r610, which is the intel mobile 4 series (GM45/ICH9m) with either the 4500mhd gfx or in your case an nvidia gfx.
I myself was experiencing reboots when FN + brightness up/down or backlight on/off is pressed in vista 64/win7 RC 64.
However another problem i have is that all 64 bit linux operating systems crash and reboot when the X server (graphical server) starts.
I was able to use linux to pinpoint the problem to the BIOS, as kernel logs indicate that the 4GB of memory in my laptop isnt being mapped correctly.
So i took a 2GB stick out on my laptop, so only running with 2GB and guess what?
First, all 64 bit linux operating systems work perfectly.
Secondly in Vista 64 and win7 RC 64, FN + brightness up/down and backlight no longer cause the system to crash.
I have tested all my memory sticks extensively and am positve they are fine.
Interestingly, under linux i issued the command cat /proc/mtrr to view the memory mtrr tables and compared 2GB to 4GB.
The problem i can see in my case is that 4GB is a mess and the 32mb dedicated protion of memory for the gfx card is not being declared by the BIOS.
Vista and win7 RC 64, must be remapping the memory tables hence in my case the extra stability, however FN+brightness / backlight must be accessing the video in someway to cause the hard reboot.
The only way to fix this is through a BIOS update.
So to test this theory, you (or anyone else) have 2 options.
1) Run Win7 RC 64 or Vista 64 with 2GB of memory. Test EDM 64 bit.
If EDM still crashes or your system is unstable your problem lies elsewhere.
2) Try running a 64 bit linux live CD such as Ubuntu 9.04 with 4GB of memory.
If it crashes, then most likely memory mapping is the issue. You can view the kernel logs to find out, but will have to make the kernel boot with the option mem=4096M so it does not crash.
Issue the command in a terminal, dmesg > file
This will write the contents of the kernel debug messages to a file in your home folder called file. Then use gedit to view the file, look for any messages that say BIOS memory mapping. Or attach the file here so i can read it.
If you want to see how your memory is being mapped,
Open a terminal and type the command, cat /proc/mtrr
Alternatively see if the live cd boots with 2gb.
So, if you own the following models, Q310, R610 and R510, the cause of your stability issues when running 64 bit vista or windows 7 rc with 4GB of ram could be related to a buggy bios, specificially incorrect memory mapping.
I would appreciate anyone with the above models to test this theory. -
you're spot on with the bios thing as i have tried all the options you suggest and can confirm that 64 bit ubuntu and 64 bit windows7 work brilliantly when you drop the memory to 2gb.
so how do i go about getting samsung to correct this?
thanks
steve -
Thanks for trying this out, at least now i know im not alone.
I have been in contact with samsung uk customer service via email, and have been informed that the issue has been referred to their engineers to look at, i am currently waiting for their response (engineers report).
I am sure they will confirm my observations. In any event i will post back what they say.
In the meantime, it would be good if as many people with the problem can confirm it and post on these forums. -
I had this problem when I installed Windows 7 RC1 64Bit also, I did not however, get the chance to take a stick of RAM out to try as I have downgraded back to 32Bit Windows 7.
However, now that I have pre-ordered Windows 7, I would like to use the 64Bit version, to use my memory to its full potential.
I am currently on the BIOS version 10SU, I don't suppose anyone is running any older versions that they could try, or do you think that this has been a constant thing through all the versions?
Do you think me also emailing Samsung would help, or have you heard anything back from Samsung yet fizzyfanta?
Thanks
Stewart
!EDIT!
I have seen on some Linux forums that 64Bit Ubuntu will work with ACPI turned off, would this also work with Windows 7 and what benefits would I lose by doing so? -
21st June - Samsung customer support referred issue to engineers
30th June - I emailed for an update, response was
"The case you have referred to is currently with our product specialist team who are investigating. Once a resolution has been found our product specialist will contact you directly"
So i am still waiting for samsung to contact me about the problem and a possible fix.
ACPI is responsible for power management features and i believe Vista and Windows 7 will not install on systems that do not support ACPI. In otherwords you cannot disable ACPI and run vista/win7. -
Ah, ok fair enough.
I have emailed Samsung anyway, you never know.
Fingers crossed. -
Mind you, its probably not good to try to install another system's BIOS eh?
Sorry for all the posts!
Stu -
I will wait patiently until the end of this month, if samsung do not contact me by then i will phone them and ask to speak to thier specialist team investigating the issue.
Sounds like fun -
Although if I can do anything to help, please let me know!
I will let you know if I hear anything from Samsung. -
You seem to be getting further than I am fizzyfanta, the last response I got from Samsung (this wednesday) over the issue (for my R610) was as follows:
"The release of Windows 7 will be treated in the same way as Windows Vista in that the drivers should be released around the same time as the operating system becomes available to the public. At the same time Samsung will continue with driver development for previous Windows versions such as Vista and XP."
We may be waiting a bit longer I feel - which for me is a real pain as I use my laptop for dev work and could really do with running Win 7 and especially a x64 op system. We shall see...... -
According to a post in microsofts technet forum, a R610 user updated his bios which solved his problems.
So samsung must be aware of the issue.
http://social.technet.microsoft.com...e/thread/7c7830de-510d-4474-aa3b-bcba086edb91
defraguk, are you running on the latest bios for your R610? -
I must admit I haven't updated it, but then I didn't think the BIOS had changed for some time on Samsungs web site. I will have a play tonight and report back....
-
Just recieved an email from Samsung........its not good!
-
As i have confirmed on my R510 and geekdaddi has confirmed on his Q310, Vista 64-bit and Windows 7 64-bit work perfectly with 2GB installed.
I would suggest you try your laptop with 2GB of ram and confirm if it works.
The Q310 and my R510 already supports 64 bit operating systems, however there is a bug with the BIOS, when you run 4GB in a 64 bit operating system (windows and linux) it will crash/reboot.
Samsung are aware of this problem and are trying to hide it by saying your laptop does not support 64 bit.
Well if it doesnt support 64 bit then why does 2GB of ram work??
We have purchased a laptop with a defect in the BIOS and are simply requesting a fix which is perfectly possible and easy for them to do.
If they are unwilling to help then this will be the first and last samsung laptop i purchase. They do not care about their customers.
I hope i get a better reply in the next coming days/weeks... -
I am going to keep pestering Samsung though, and try to get some kind of resolution.
I have emailed back asking for their reasons as to why they are not supporting 64Bit.
If I installed the 64 Bit version and ran it on only 2Gb of RAM, how much of a performance drop would I see? -
-
This may sound dim but is there a way to access the advanced features in the bios. it might be as simple enable/disable the memory remap in there.
-
If you are not seeing the full amount of ram under a 64 bit operating system then the memory remap feature can cure this.
In my case and i believe yours, this is not an issue since we can see the full amount of ram available (minus video ram).
Hence under 64 bit windows my ram available is 4064MB.
And the system crashes are unrelated to the bios remap feature. -
I have just received an email from Samsung asking me to provide a detailed report of my problem, and they may escalate it to their higher level (if they can re-create the problem), however I will have to do a fresh install of an OS in order to obtain OS versions and driver versions.
So I have a couple of questions before I do this.
- What software can I use to backup my current Windows installation (including all programs) so I can revert to this after experimenting with OS's?
- I plan on also trying a 64 Bit Linux build in order to give a more complete report to Samsung. Which build would you recommend?
- Is there anything else I can do / check after installing the OS's to help the problem (apart from going to 2Gb Ram)?
Thanks for any help!
Stu -
1. Disk imaging software such as norton ghost will create an entire disk image that you can restore via a cd/dvd.
2. I would recommend you stick with Ubuntu 9.04 x64 bit since it can run as a live cd and is very popular.
3. The problem is essentially that all 64 bit operating systems work perfectly with 2GB and will crash with 4GB.
You could point out to samsung that the R610 suffered from the same bug which has been fixed in their latest BIOS release, and to fix the Q310 and R510 all they simply need to do is apply the same fix.
What relevance does the R610 have?
The Q310, R510 and R610 are all based on the intel GM45 + ich9(m) chipset and feature x4500mhd or nvidia gfx. I bet they all use the same firmware with slight modifications hence why they all suffer from the same problem. -
I will point out the R610 BIOS issues also.
Thanks again. -
if you burn the ubuntu cd and insert it whilst in windows it will allow you to use wubi to create a dual boot which after you has confirmed that 64 bit and 4gb don't work can simply unistall.

I have no idea if this will help but i have found how to get into the extra bios settings but there may be something in there that might fix the problem
press F2 to go in the bios
Once in Bios
press FN key + F11 (numlock will illuminate)
press FN key + F12 (scrollock will illuminate)
press CAPS lock so in illuminates the press ii again
use the cursor to move left/right and the intel option should magically appear

I did manage to get into the menu somehow, but not sure how I did it. The settings are all beyond me anyway, but someone else might have an idea?

Edit
Figured it out...... If you press Caps lock twice, and then press Esc, the Intel Menu should appear!
Good find mate, I hope you are on to something! -
anyone know where i can download the 07SU bios so i can try downgrading the bios to see if that fixes it

(Although the Q310 link doesn't seem to link to the Q310 so you might have to do some digging)

Bingo http://www.samsungpc.com/08/products/q310/firmware.html#firmware
Only has 05SU though.
Has anyone made any progress with this? I've got a q310 with 4gb ram and am sick of running vista so thought I'd give windows 7 a go but would really like to make the most of my 4gb. -

still looking for 07SU no luck at the moment, If anyone knows how to force a bios update im willing to sacrifice my laptop to the cause using an r610 bios.
Although i would prefer samsung to fix the problem -

interesting 'free upgrade' to windows 7 option on dabs... -
Free upgrade to 32 bit version, no doubt.
Im not sure if i am making progress but today i got an email from samsung stating that head office want to know my laptop model number and operating system i am currently using and intend to use.
Information which i have already provided to their customer services, we will see what happens next. -
They may not need it, I think my laptop heard me talking and decided to kill itself so its going back to samsung on friday they can fix it and then use it to test.

I am very interested in this update, my Q310 works perfectly under Win7 RTM x64 with 4GB, but it is the Fn keys do not work (for example, Fn+up reboot the laptop). Maybe this update could solve this problem
thx -

thx fizzyfanta,
I read your post, I'll do the test this we surely. but I understand in your previous message that the update bios had solve this problem.
I'll come back to give u my result's test.
(ps: sorry for my english) -
Yes the update has fixed all problems.

The file samsung sent was a dos executable file which i had to run outside of windows from a bootable disk/usb.
It doesnt have any version number associated with it.
After the flash, my R510 bios version remained the same which is currently 07LI.
As for availability, you will have to contact samsung.
