Please give more details: Is the hardware OK? Can you see the contents of the DVD in Windows Explorer? If not, does Device Manager show the optical drive (what make / model?)?
If the hardware is OK and you can see the files, then the problem must be software. What DVD player comes with the R40? The Samsung AVStation or PowerDVD? If you manually start either of these, can you then play the DVD?
I hope the above will either help you solve the problem or help us give a better diagnosis.

Hi John,
This is the error message I'm getting when I put in a DVD - I can see the contents.
DVD-Video playback graph could not be built due to insufficient decoders.
Playing the movie failed due to the following error.
[module] avs3main [file] wndmovie.cpp [line] 3061
The R40 comes with AVStation Premium.
How do I check to see if the hardware is OK or not? I've tried playing a CD and that works - it reads photos from a CD, it just seems to be the DVD.
It has the following installed: TEAC DV W28EC which samsung don't seem to support!!!!!!
I've tried to manually start the DVD player but I get the same error code.
Let me know if you need anymore info.
Thanks again

First, I had the DV-W28EA in my old X60 and it is a very good optical drive (much more reliable burning performance than the TS-L632M in my new X60plus) You can read CDs OK so that excludes the hardware from being the problem.
It looks as if AVstation is the cause of the problem. Did you also get the Cyberlink DVD solution software with your R40? If so, try this. I would admit that I don't use the AVstation software. There is the suggestion that AVstation hasn't got the right codec for the DVD format. It is possible that this could be fixed by reinstallation.
Otherwise, I suggest that you invest in either PowerDVD or WinDVD which will do a better job of playing DVDs than AVstation. PVD7 costs £16.97 at amazon.co.uk. You can download a trial version which is good for 30 days.
The above suggestions go around your problem rather than solving it, but would get you to the objective of playing a DVD.
