    Hi,
    I have an R505 that I got at the beginning of the year. I am having a couple of problems that appear to be connected to the laptop overheating;

    The main problem is with games. I didn’t buy it primarily for this, but I have installed a couple of games on it for my daughter. You basically get a couple of minutes before the laptop shuts down. The other problem is, if you’ve been using the laptop for more than 10 minutes of so, and then for whatever reason do a reboot, it shuts down during the reboot. Leave it for 10 minutes to cool down, and it starts up fine.

    I had a look on the BIOS to see if there was anything regarding temperature or fan control, but there was nothing. I wonder if anyone has an opinion on whether this is simply a hardware fault, or if there is anything I could do about it myself?

    Thanks,
    John.

    I had a R505 for a week or so before i returned it because of the abismal battery life, but apart from that it worked great.

    Have you tried cleaning out the fan air-inlet on the bottom and the exhaust on the side.

    You can use a can of Air Duster.

    That definitely looks like overheating. However, a cooling system should not get clogged in 6 months although using the computer on soft and fluffy surfaces will accelerate the process. Can you check if the fan is blowing out very hot air. It should also be getting very noisy as the temperature builds up.

    You can use HWmonitor to see what the temperatures are doing and what temperature triggers the shutdown.
