Hello.
I hope someone can offer me some advice.
I bought the samsung R530-JA02UK from pc world (uk) a few days ago.The dvd drive is a TSSTcorp (sorry havent got access to laptop at the moment).
And ive not installed anything on it,its a clean install.
The problem is the DVD read speed of the DVDRW drive is very, very slow.
To the pont of being unbearable. Its been like this out of the box.
It takes 31mins to read a DVD to copy (supposed to be a x8 drive) and about 9mins to read a CD - The burn process is twice as quick, take about 13min to burn a DVD.
Compare this to my ancient desktop drive, which takes 6mins 30secs to read a dvd to copy (24mins faster).
The same is true of all software ive tried, including WMedia player - Cds are very slow at ripping.
The same when copying DVDs/CDs via explorer in windows - The tranfer rate for DVDs is 2.6mb a second. The transfer rate for CDs is 1.2mbps.
Ive tried loads of DVDs/CDs - Originals/different brands all behave the same.
Please tell me this isnt normal?
I took it back to pc world and to be frank, they were a nightmare.Saying this was normal etc.Saying it seems to read ok.They were copying tiny files (25mb) off dvds and saying "look,it did that quick" - Of course it did,it was only 25mb !..
I pointed out that my old PC does the same task 24mins faster (7mins) and the rude tech guy said "you must have a super-duper computer then"
Ive been doing CD/DVDs (100s of discs) for over 7 years and this speed cannot be normal surely?.If so,are all laptop drives this slow?
EDIT - Ive tried un-installing and insatlling the drivers again via device manager - It had no effect.
I dont want to send this off for repair.I dont think its right, its been like this from day 1 and its only a few days old.
Sorry for the long post.
Thanks in advance.
EDIT 2 - According to this website.
http://www.osta.org/technology/dvdqa/dvdqa4.htm
My x8 drive should have a transfer rate of around 9-10mb at least, yet it never goes above 3mb. (which is below x3 speed).
Forgot to mention that you can hardly hear the drive spinning when its reading - Yet when it starts burning ,you can clearly hear the drive going much, much faster.

Hello!
I have the same problem with my DVD, you can se my post NP-R530-JBZ1SE.
And my DVD is a TEAC_DV-W28S-V that i cant finde any support on, i am sure that support guy is right, it´s normal, BUT ONLY when it comes to Samsungs Laptops. It shall NOT be that slow no matter what they say.
I dont think there is a solution to this, maybe it´s some strange settings in there(samsungs) firmware? If i hade tons of money i have bought a DVD that i knew was fast, and installed it in the Laptop just to try if it is the DVD or some stupied setup in there firmwares/drivers etc..
Good luck and hope it works out for you.
Kind regards

I cant believe this would be normal?
People would be posting about this surely?
At this speed it will take me weeks to transfer files from my desktop to the laptop.
I could take the drive being slow - But this is ridiculous. -

The reason for the slow dvd copying is a thing called riplock it limits the copy speed of movie dvd`s so that it is more difficult to pirate them as the read speed is so slow, they also say it makes the dvd drive quieter.
You might be able to get a hacked region free bios with the riplock disabled.
try the website below.
The Firmware Page • Portal -
It does this on my DATA discs ive created as well - Not just movie DVDs.
I'm well aware of of this feature.Ive being using ANYDVD and Clone DVD for years to rip DVDs.And my pioneer re-writer slow down because of riplock.
This laptop is slow with EVERY type of disc.CD-DATA/CD-ROM/CD-AUDIO/PHOTO-CD/DVD-ROM/DVD-DATA/DVD-MOVIE ...Basically,everything.
Copying files off my DVD/CD data discs takes ages via window explorer as well - Not just DVD/CD copying software. -
But i found this thread by you http://forum.notebookreview.com/hardware-components-aftermarket-upgrades/318348-slow-dvd-read-speed-tsstcorp-ts-l633l-dvd-rw.html
This is how found these forums via a google search.
Did you ever find a solution to this? ...Or was it because of this anti-rip feature. -

I completely forgot about that thread, it`s a long time since i had a Samsung, many notebook ago, I found the thread below it might help.

- (then i have to wait another 14mins for the burn) Compared to 6 and a half minutes on my old computer (read speed).Something is obviously wrong with my DVD-Drive.
No matter what speed i select for read speeds in various applications,it always takes 30+ minutes.
Sorry, that isnt my drive.I think the model number ends in C.
I'm not at home at the moment so i cant check the exact model number.
Thanks for your advice, its much appretiated -
@bonny2
The file i copied was 4GB, and yes it was faster then your´s but still 10-11 minutes slower then in my old LG laptop. And your´s is the worst i have ever seen.
I have never heard about this issues before, and i am 85% sure it´s a samsung issue. If all of this was about pirated files, then i wont complain.
BTW: What spec do you have on your laptop, there seam to be millions of spec on the R530 model
Monday i am going to call Samsung, and if i dont get the answers i am looking for i am gonna call someting that is called ARN, they handle cases like this where the spec say someting and in real life its something else.
Kind Regards

This is my DVD-Drive - TSSTcorp TS-L633c
I re-read your thread again.
I'd like to correct something i said - I said it took 31mins to read a 4.7gb a DVD-disc via the cyberlink suit icluded with the laptop.(i was going by the remaining time indicator)
I was wrong - If i let it complete the process fully it did it in 19mins (still slow).Exactly the same amount of time it took you to copy a 4gb file.
And like you,my highest max transfer rate was 3.7mb per second.(via explorer)
Ive been round to my brothers house today to test his acer laptop drive - And his was much faster, going over twice as fast as mine (8-9mbps).
You cant hear my drive when its reading discs - Which indicates to me that its going slow.
Yet when its burning discs, you can clearly hear the drive speeding up normaly.
I dont know what to think now - If both are laptops are displaying the same behaviour, maybe this is normal for this model ? (r530).
Either that or we both have identical faults with our DVD-Drive.
I didnt really by this laptop for dvd/cd copying. But its annoying having to wait for my files to copy over from desktop backups...
And i'm worried, that if i ever have to re-install windows that the drive will fail whilst doing the process.
The back-up process was a nightmare - It took ages backing up to dvds with this drive.Because it had to verify the data, which took ages. And this only required 3 disks !!.
I hope i never have to restore with these discs because,i'm guesing the restore process wil have to verify the disc for errors before installing.THEN it will have to install from the discs....Which will take ages with this drive.
I'm wondering if the R530 can boot from a external DVD-Drive.Would you have any info on this? -
Hmm that was strange, we dont have the same DVD drive, and not same spec, and still we got the same result hehe..and it behavs just like yours, it spinns up and then i cant hear it.
I think you can boot up same as mine, USB key, USB CD, USB FDD, USB HDD

I have come across utilities that reduce the speed of the optical drive in order to reduce the noise. However, I can't seen anything in the Samsung User Guide that indicates that this facility is pre-loaded.
How about burning a Ubuntu Linux live CD, booting from it and checking the optical drive performance?
John -
Good advice John, i will try that
Kind Regards
Wille -
Ive just installed it on this laptop.Ive set all types of discs to "fast and noisey" and it makes no difference whatsoever.
One interesting point - I downloaded DVDINFO PRO EXTREME (trial version). This tests the speed of the optical drives.
When i do a test, you can clearly hear the DVD drive spinning up fast when reading CDs and DVDs and the transfer rates increases a lot when doing these tests.
And if i quickly quit this program and start a burning program (before the drive spins down to idle) i can read a DVD image in around 9mins (11 mins faster than normal)- However, this makes little difference when copying files via explorer, because this drives spins down slow again.

I'd like to make a point i made clear in my original post about PC Worlds "Tech Guy" "Experts".
When i said he said this was "normal" - He meant ALL computers take 30+ mins to read DVDs and ALL DVD drives were this slow in all computers.Which is clearly not true.
When i pointed out my 8 year desktop does the same process in 6min 25secs he got very aggressive and said "i must have the fastest computer on earth" and its must be "super-duper".Basically calling me a liar.
When i said test the same discs on computers in the store then,to see the results on those,he refused saying "Its against company policy"
When i asked for a replacement he refused. When asked for a refund he refused.
I'm really angry with PC World.Ive been using computers since the early 80s and like to think i know a fair bit - But the stuff they were fobbing me off with were complete lies - I can think of no other words for it.
I have 28 days to get a refund - But PC World are refusing point blank to admit there is a problem with the optical drive - So i cant see waht i can do on the PC World front - Except warn people about the way this company goes about its buisness and "after sales support". -
hehe, i think i have to boot from a usb stick..i cant test the drive with a live cd in the dvd drive
@bonny2
HE is a liar and Samsung(and there resellers) is shooting themselves in the foot all the time whenever they open there mouth.
I have to burn live cd on USB stick so i can test it, but i can say that the DVD sounds more now.
UPDATE: It is the same speed in Ubuntu
Kind Regards

hey people,
I have just the same problem with my DVD burner on my hp pavilion dm4 us1070... the dvd player type is hpcdvdw TS-U633F. the copying from a dvd is super slow, starting at 3 mbps and from there as the copy continues get slower an slower, even to a speed of 100 KB ps and then it get stuck until i remove the dvd and doesnt continue copying.
what do you think I should do about it??? i just bought the computer! -
@ hamutaln
Is it intel chipset in your Notebook aswell, like Intel(R) 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset? I have Intel HM55 chipset, and thats a part of Intel(R) 5 Series/3400Series Chipset.
I have read some PDF files about Intel chipset, and they have some problem that they DONT have any fix for, but i am not sure if it affects our problems.
I am not that good, but maybe someone is here is and can find out if thats the case?

I have the R580 with Blu-Ray. It is a TSSTcorp model. Last night, I transcoded my AeonFlux Blue-Ray movie in 1080p DTS HD (straight copy based on drive speed read...no encoding whatsoever). The MKV file (video and audio) was around 11 gb and averaged 10meg/s. It took about 22 minutes. -
@Sammy225.
Thanks for the info.
Doing that sort of test on my laptop would take around 50mins,going by my average transfer rate (2.50mbps).
I'm also having some other strange issues.
For example -
When i turned on the laptop for the 2nd time,i noticed my Internet explorer shortcut icon had vanished.
Then in the last couple of days, ive noticed if i click on the SAMSUNG user guide straight after windows has loaded i get a strange error, something along the lines of "flash is not installed correctly, program terminated" - Yet if i go directly to the program exe in its folder,it launches 1st time everytime.
I also got 2 loud beeps from the the laptop itself (not from the speakers) whilst viewing this user guide.Though this has only happend once.
The front of the laptop also seems to be louder - Although this could be my imagination. But i'm sure it wasnt this loud before. And rather worryingly,i think this where the hard-drive is located.
I really should go back to PC World. But they were so confrontational and agressive last time,i dont hold much hope of a resolution at their end.
If they wont admit theres a problem with the laptop what can i do? -
I wonder way its says -1kb/s when i look in System information and the Cd-rom device?
System Information
Transference speed(i am not sure how to translate) -1.00 kB/sec -
After hours of searching for the specs of my drive ( TSSTcorp TS-L633C).
Ive finally found them - The drive is supposed to have a dvd-read/write speed of 8x - And CD read/write speed of 24x.Which backs up the info from neros info tool.
Mine comes nowhere near to these read speeds - It barely reaches above 2x and gets slower and slower the longer it reads the disc - The transfer rate should steadily increase the longer its reading a disc - From my experience with other DVD-RW drives anyway.

Just an update.
I went back today and it was a different fella at the tech guy counter - He had a completly different attitude to the other tech guy.And he gave me a full refund after looking at my screen grabs of the transfer rates of the drive.
Infact,he was very polite and helpful - And even apologised for the other tech guys behaviour.
So i got a happy ending in the end !
I'd like to thank everyone for the help and advice on these forums - Its much appreciated.
Thank you.
Colin.
