I've looked into the Samsung R70. Stylish but lacking a firewire port.![]()
I guess I could buy an adapter but is Samsung a good brand for laptops?
Has anyone had any issues, or, indeed, does anyone have any recommendations?
I'm after a mulitimedia laptop with HDMI output.

Oh well! so far the R70 owners have neither rushed in to defend their purchasing decisions or give their regrets.
There is a long and well-viewed thread about the R70 and most of it is positive.
Is the Firewire port something you use frequently. I know it is something I like to have, but I can't remember when I last used it. The R70 has a PC card (as opposed to Express card) slot so the Firewire cards are quite cheap.
Overall, I would rate Samsung as a good brand. They are by no means perfect but the problems are relatively few. There are a few horror stories but they seem to have got the R70 right so there's nothing bad waiting to be fixed.

Hi John, thanks for your reply. I have been doing some (intensive) research. I've not come across much negative feedback with regards to Samsungs - loads of Sony Vaio "horror stories", which wouldve been my alternative to the R70.
Similar to you, firewire is something I would like to have but I'll only need it on rare occasions when I edit video. I'm wondering whether I can connect via DVI anyway. In which case I'd be likely to buy the R70 over the Vaio FZ. -
The R70 does not have a DVI port. It has a VGA port and a HDMI port. There are adapters for HDMI -> DVI-I but they cost like 30-40€.
Or are you talking about the firewire connector to a camcorder? For that you can get a pcmcia card with firewire port. It would work like a normal firewire port.
R70 that good?
