Hi,
Just purchased an R700 yesterday and it's a pretty good laptop. However, I'm a bit concerned with the screen. It seems to be leaking a lot of backlight as soon as you move anywhere out of dead centre (i.e. blacks become grey and colours fade)..
Not this is my first glossy screen laptop, after years of using normal matte TFTs, so is this normal? Does anyone else experiance this sort of thing?
I'll post some pictures up later on so you can see what I mean..

Is the leakage something you notice during initial boot with a black background or normal usage? The former is a worst case. Almost all LCDs have an optimum viewing angle, particularly in the vertical, with a better horizontal viewing range. See this review for how it should look.
If the backlight bleed is noticeable during normal use or the viewing angles very limited then I suggest you contact Samsung support who will probably declare it DoA (Dead on Arrival) and advise you on how to arrange a replacement.

I find the viewing angle extremely limited in the vertical. If i'm not dead centre then you start to see a fading of colours. In fact, looking dead on sometimes the corners appear to dark and I find myself bobbing around to try and see everything..
It's hard to describe, but it something I have never seen on other screens (I've used numerous TFT screens and also have an LCD TV).
Samsung describe the screen as "[allows you to enjoy photo-like image quality, greater viewing angles and better text legibility, reducing eye strain." At the moment this certainly doesn't live up to that claim.
I've taken some pics - mostly taken in the dark to stop reflections which might make them look slightly worse than they are - but still bad.
As dead centre as I can get it. It was taken in a dark room with brightness all the way down.
I've increased the angle slightly so you can see than banding effect.
My desktop from dead centre. Still a dark top/light bottom.. -

Thanks for the photos. The leakage does look to be excessive. I think the bottom one is the best evidence that something isn't right because you are getting uneven lighting and contrast when viewed straight. Either contact Samsung support or your retailer to get a replacement computer.

John - cheers for your help. I definately think the issue is the unevenness - compared to the review you linked to mine is well off..
It was from saveonsamsung so i'll see how the returns process goes.. -
keep us posted. I almost bought an R700 from them because of the £50 cashback offer though I cancelled the order just as it was being dispatched fortunately! I thought it might be better to wait for the r710 model but now I've gone and ordered a Toshiba P300-156(refurbished model). If you're lucky you can get a good one so I'll give it a try or send it back if it's not up to scratch. Difficult to find any decent reviews on this model which is weird as I thought Toshs were pretty popular with the masses. Any experience of this model anyone? I should probably post this in the Tosh pages but I'll leave it here for the moment.
