    Hi,

Ok I was given a brand new R780 at my new job a few weeks ago and since I received it I've had no sound. They removed Windows 7 and installed XP before I got it.

I have since tried the following to get the sound working with no joy:-

    - Checked the sound wasn't muted and the sound level was turned up.
    - Ensured the default playback device is set to 'Realtek HD Audio Output'.
    - Made sure the 'Windows Audio' service is installed and has been started.
    - Downloaded the latest XP Realtek audio drivers from the Samsung website under the R780 section.
    - Downloaded the latest XP audio drivers from the Realtek website.
    - Uninstalled and re-installed all the audio devices/drivers multiple times.
    - Installed the KB88811 hotfix (by tricking the system into thinking I was on SP2).
    - Cleared duplicated 'wdmaud.drv' entries from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32 in the registry.

They are all the things I can remember that I've tried in the last few weeks (there may be others).

I've had no sound at all except one night where some rubbish piece of software (I think it was called 'Driver Pack Solutions') installed about 50 different versions of the Realtek drivers and one of them must have worked even though it was still showing the audio device as using the driver version 5.10.0.5986 in device manager. I removed all them though as they were filling my 'Add/Remove' programs and it wasn't the best way to fix the issue. Anyway that's the reason I know it isn't a hardware issue.

I'm running Windows XP Media Center Edition version 2002 service pack 3.

Surely I can't be the only person with a R780 that has installed XP and come across this issue so any help will be muchly appreciated. Let me know if you need any more details on the system or if my explanation of what I've tried isn't clear etc...

    Thanks loads.
    Jess

EDIT: ****I apologise for the mutliple thread post - connectivity issues.

Ok a bit of an update. If I use headphones then they are working fine which is weird seen as surely the headphone jack is run from the onboard audio as well as the speakers so it uses the same drivers etc...

Looks like I might be the only person with this issue then ha. It's driving me crazy having a laptop with a blu-ray player and everything but not being able to do something as simple as outputting sound!

    Cheers.

If the headphones work, then it might be a hardware issue. Did they speakers work before you installed XP? Another test to be sure of this is to boot from a Linux Live CD. This will allow you to test the hardware without changing the installation.

If the headphones work then the problem is either the internal speakers (but you mention that one night you did have sound which indicates that the speakers are OK) or with the system for switching between speakers and headphones. In the old days this used to be a mechanical switch activated when you put a plug in the socket, but I think that manufacturers have moved to other methods.

I suggest that you dig deep into the Realtek audio control panel and see if you can find any options relating to switching between speakers and headphones.

    Sorry for the late reply.

    Cheers for the replies guys.

Good suggestion with the using a Linux live CD - I booted into an Ubuntu live CD and I got sound from the speakers straight away with no configuration changes so I think it's safe to say it's a software issue from within Windows XP.

I looked into the Realktek audio control panel but there aren't a lot of options available to change and I couldn't see anything that could be the problem. As far as the headphone thing is concerned, when I plug some headphones in the control panel picks up on it by lighting up the graphical headphone jack and when I unplug them it is no longer lit up so it would seem it is handling that alright.

    Any other suggestions anyone?

Fixed it!!! FINALLY!!! OK what I did was the following:-

    - Start > Run > Control Panel.
    - Opened the ' Realtek HD Sound Effect Manager'.
    - Clicked on the ' i' icon in the bottom left of the screen.
    - Checked what it said in the ' Audio Codec' field (mine was: ALC269).
    - I then googled 'Realtek alc269 drivers' and came across this site: REALTEK - Download driver for ALC101 ALC201 ALC202 ALC203 ALC250 ALC260 ALC262 ALC267 ALC268 ALC269 ALC272 ALC273 ALC275 ALC650 ALC653 ALC655 ALC658 ALC660 ALC662 ALC663 ALC665 ALC670 ALC850 ALC861 ALC880 ALC882 ALC883 ALC885 ALC887 ALC888 ALC889
    - I selected the tick in the ' WXP 32 bit' column on the ' ALC269' field and downloaded the file.
    - I then uninstalled the current Realtek drivers that were installed on the system.
    - Then ran the ' wdm_256.exe'.
    - At the end of the installation the computer was needed to be restarted.
    - When it booted into windows again there was a dialog saying that Windows had installed the new hardware but needed restarting for it to work correctly.
    - I then selected 'Yes' on the dialog to restart it again and then when it booted up again the sound was working.
    - Within 'Device Manager', the version of the Realtek driver is now 5.10.0.6278.

By the way, this version of the driver is NOT the version that is downloaded when getting the XP drivers from the Samsung website in the R780 section.

Hopefully these instructions might help someone else at some point.

So glad it is working now - it was driving me crazy!

    Cheers
    J
