Let's start a thread on the 15" Samsung Series 9. I am looking for official press photos of it but I can only find the 13". If one of you find them, please post the official left, right, top, bottom and opened links.
Looks like the early adopters are going to pay dearly for this machine.
Todd Bouman, VP of Samsung Electronics introduced the Series 9 today at CES. After they played the marketing video of the engineering effort that went into the second gen Series 9, he came back out on stage holding one an claimed it was the Series 9 15" model.
Here's a screenshot taken from the replay video at the 48:54 mark (slightly cropped before uploading here).
I'm pretty sure he was confused. That doesn't appear to be a 15" Series 9. It looks like a Series 5 to me. See the video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JuY2lRsPuG0 for the Series 5. You'll notice it's identical to what he is holding.

Definitely doesn't look like the series 9, as the series 9 has a curve shape at the back.

I don't believe any of the reviewers received the 15" Series 9. And I avoid the CNET "reviews" since they lack detail. -
Notebook Reviews - Laptop Reviews and Netbook News Picture there's that...

Looks like a sidegrade if you are a current Series 9 owner.

Unless of course you want/need the 1600x900 screen. Then it's an upgrade. I'm curious to know how people will take to a 13.3" screen at 1600x900. I'm sure the 15" will be very nice, but I'm not sure about that rez on a 13. -
It's like 1080p at 15.6 inch.

One thing is for sure, the 15" in the video at Samsung Series 9 15-inch First Video Hands On: Ultrabook Size, Big Display isn't the machine demoed on stage at the Samsung press conference. How a VP could make that mistake is beyond me.
The black design looks great. I am ready to order the 256GB SSD model. -
Soooooo is that a mini DisplayPort for real or is that's weird mini VGA we have seen on Asus UX31?
-
Anyone find any pictures showing the other color?
-
Want to be clear the 11.6in model isn't getting the newer looks and higher res display, right? And both 13in and 15in models have an SD card slot or no?
-
You mean the one that's not black?

The Series 9 official pics are in the gallery at Samsung @ CES 2012 but do not include the 15". Only the 13.3".
The pics in the prior post don't appear to be the 15" either. One of them is a Series 7. -
That's the one!
I didn't know what the other color was. I was hoping it was silver, like the aluminum color used on MBA and Asus Zenbook (and my Sony Vaio). I'm not fond of the "off" silver colors, like bronze or light brown or whatever that color is.
Where'd ya find these pics ?? -
Just noticed your post... thanks.
-
-
Yeah, I made a boo-boo. I actually deleted the second picture before I saw your post.
-
Thanks, but both of those are the 13" version.
-
Jeez. You're fussy. I thought you wanted the color.
-
hee-hee. Yes, I do... but the only way to be SURE is to see it on a 15"er!
EDIT: But if it ends up looking like this, I'll be happy!
-
I would get the 13.3" with 1600x900 before the 15"...
-
Why is that?
-
Thors.Hammer Notebook Enthusiast
You can tell when you are looking at the 15" a couple of different tell tale ways.
- Two SS USB 3.0 ports on the right site
- Headphone jack on the left side
- Dedicated page up, page down and other keys
- Black tone on the top, keyboard area on the inside
- The people that use it squint less

-
This is my main reason for not wanting 1600x900 on a 13" screen!
I've got 1920x1200 on my 24" monitor (that's 94 PPI) and 1600x900 on my 16.4" laptop (that's 111 PPI). I truly believe that 1600x900 on a 13" screen (or 138 PPI) would simply be too much for my eyes.
And changing the DPI won't help in my case since I work from home and VERY often switch between external monitor and laptop screen. It would be way too much of a hassle to constantly switch the DPI back and forth. -
Because I would use it as a ultra-portable device for traveling and commuting. I have a powerful desktop, with multiple monitors etc., that is my primary computing device.
In the 5-6 months that I had Series 9 13.3" devices, I never felt that it was too small. I really liked the look, the feel, the weight, the size, the display, the keyboard, the features, the praises, etc. -
I find that the people who do that are those that won't admit that they need glasses
I gave up that fight a few years ago...

Few questions?
Is the keyboard back-lit?
Can I configure the 15inch for a 500GB HDD?
Release date?
if so I am so going return the ENVY..this looks sexy. -
Thors.Hammer Notebook Enthusiast
Yes, the keyboard is backlit. As for the HDD question, I don't think so. I don't think there's room for even a 7mm drive. It does however have two SS USB 3.0 ports so the sky's the limit on external storage.
Samsung did not set a release date in the press releases though some of the bloggers that got early remove machines mention 2/27. -
For the record, I wear contact lenses.
-
I found a picture of the 15" in silver:
-
Looks eerily similar to the Series 7.

I'm wondering if silver is 128GB SSD and black is 256GB SSD. Sure would be nice if someone would clarify. I'm sure everything will become clear by the time we are ready to drop $2000 on the darn thing. -
How much do you think the 256GB will cost.
I wish this had it where you can configure it with a 500 HDD... -
Thors.Hammer Notebook Enthusiast
Market conditions will dictate that. I guess we'll see. There is a lot of competition in the market now and the Series 9 isn't as unique as it once was.
I'll be looking for a good deal even if that means waiting a while and not paying the early adopter tax. -
500Gb is a harddisk, I guess the Series 9 will use MSata SSDs or similar.

One can get a 500GB SSD (Samsung 830) but it is 7mm thick and I doubt if will fit in the S9's slim chassis (or would significantly reduce the space for the battery).
John -
Has a 7mm 500GB HDD been released? If it's a 9.5mm 500GB HDD, then Samsung has found a way to cram it in. Takes similar amount of space as a 2.5" SSD, but a 500GB SSD option seems to be too expensive to be really viable.
-
What size is the 500gb drive in the 13.3in Series 5?
-
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
I assume you mean the thickness? One way to check is for people to report the HDD model number (available in Device Manager) and we can then look up the specs.
John -
For those that went to CES and might know this: Does the new 15" Series 9 have a true 15" screen or is it 15.6" ?
Thanks. -
Thors.Hammer Notebook Enthusiast
Good question. I'm sure it's a 16:9 ratio screen but considering they haven't released all of the SKUs and specifications it's hard to tell from pictures. And of course the "tech bloggers" don't think to measure. -
Well it's gotta be 16:9 ratio since it's 1600x900 resolution (although I much prefer 16:10, personally)... but since Samsung has both 15.6 AND 15.0 versions of the Series 7 laptop, I wondered if maybe they might have used 15.0 for the Series 9 too. They say that a slim bezel allows it to fit in a 14" body, but using a smaller screen would help in that regard too.
-
That is a good question, but I would think it actually maybe 15.0in seeing as there is no numberpad, unlike the 15.6in Series 7, which does have it while the 15.0in model does not.
-
Good point. I'm kinda hoping it is a true 15.0" screen. For me it would be a perfect 'happy medium' between a 13.3" and my current 16.4" -- which is exactly what I'm looking for.
Do you have any links to the Series 7 15.0" model? I can't find any. -
Dam 1500, just for 128GB SD. I wonder how much the 256GB is going be..
-
Thors.Hammer Notebook Enthusiast
I'm ok with a smaller 15.0 screen. And regarding price, I'm guessing about $1699 for the 256GB. -
is mr soundsgood getting excited? ;-)
to be fair, i reckon give it a year and ivy is established and i may go to samsung for the next pc
they look so good, and i absolutely love my samsung stuff, although it will always be the 13.3 ultra i reckon, after attempting to pick up my old r700 that our lass has now, well it was just so heavy...........and its only 1.4kg.....around 3.2lb, but compared to my ultrabook its a fat bugger!lol!
