What is "Kernel graphics" ?

I'm guessing Kernel is referring to discrete. That line is now getting pretty blurry considering the Intel HD 4000 integrated chip is supposed to be rather good in the Ivy Bridge chipset release.
I haven't researched a side-by-side comparison but the difference in integrated and discrete may just boil down to shared memory or not.
As long as the GPU does what you want, and in the case of an Ultrabook, does it at low temp and low power consumption, not much else is going to matter.
I would probably prefer dedicated graphics memory on a 4GB RAM system though. -
-
I think there is not so much difference between the Ivy bridge to the sandy bridge, they're almost the same, maybe 10%-15%,
about the HD3000 vs HD4000 maybe there is a little improvement, but still, you are not going to play crysis on max resolution with AAX8 on ultra-book laptop, so for browser / internet, there is not much difference.
when it will be shipped? any one has estimation? -
the integrated graphics on the newer gen sandy's are very good, i can run battle for middle earth 2 no problem on highest settings totally glitch free. okay its an old game now but for a 1kg ultrabook thats pretty darn good imo
so i'm looking forward to seeing if the 4000 series on the new IB is much of a jump again

the fact that this thread is at its 27th page and no series 9 2012 to be found.
the price of of a 15 inch with 256 ssd and the new laptops coming out from apple
and asus make me seriously reconsider buying this model.
and so should you.

I am uninterested in the current crop of Macs. -
I've made up my mind to wait for the IvB train, largely for the HD4000 graphics so I can play some older games on an ultrabook, so I'm not in any rush. Still, I had the opportunity to play with the 13" Series 9, the Asus UX31, and an MBA side by side and of the three, I was most disappointed in the UX31 which I really wanted to like. The Series 9 was a seriously impressive machine and I thought the screen was excellent. The MBA was, well, a MBA. That screen is wonderfully bright, but Ill take a matte or semi-gloss screen over a high gloss one any day. I just about bought the Series 9 on the spot due to its sheer awesomeness.
This is why we wait. -

Who knows what to believe. One thing is for sure, if the MacBook Pro is going to be a workhorse with a quad core, relatively powerful GPU, etc., it still needs room to breath. Unless of course Apple has a patent on Breathable Aluminum or something radical. -
Hi guys, advice needed
I posted on here before (for some reason the post on this specific thread was deleted, but my post on the 13 inch Series 9 and Ive Bridge 15 inch Series 9 are still up). Anyway, I'm currently teaching English in Korea and in desperate need of a laptop but I'm facing a bit of a dilemma. The 15 inch Series 9 is the most beautiful piece of hardware I have ever seen, it's as if the laptop was designed for me. It has a beautiful 15 inch MATTE screen (those s**ty glossy screens are an automatic deal breaker for me), runs silent or very quietly (again loud laptops are effectively useless to me and according to most people posting here, this laptop runs extremely quietly), it's lightweight and very portable, it has decent specs (enough for my uses) basically it's my perfect machine.
The problem revolves around the price, Samsung being headquartered in Korea you would think that their products would be cheaper here. They are not. I've been to all manner of electronic stores (including the famous tech areas) and unfortunately the price for at least this model (and most new models) is set country wide at 2,160,000 Won which translates to $1950 USD. So I'm basically left with three choices, either purchase a crummy laptop temporarily and throw away good money, bite the bullet and buy $1950 USD laptop here or use BorderLinx and purchase it online in the states and have it shipped here. I'm leaning towards option 3 but unfortunately the shipping costs alone are like $350 so I'll only be saving a lousy $100 but at least I'll get a US keyboard and definitely an English BIOS. Does anyone have any experience with BorderLinx? Are they trustworthy? According to Samsungs US website, only CDW has the laptops in stock. So if I purchase from CDW do I enter a temporary address provided by BorderLinx? Is there a cheaper alternative to either BorderLinx? For anyone familiar with Korea, is it possible to get a cheaper price for these new models here?
Thanks guys,
Matt -

The early reviews of this laptop indicated that it would have a DisplayPort and HDMI, the user manual now says there is an analog port and a micro HDMI port; what happened to the Display Port? Does anyone know what version HDMI this has? Does Micro HDMI support any dongles converting the output to DP anyway? I have a Dell U2711 monitor, which only supports its 2560x1440 resolution through DP and Dual Link DVI as far as I know. Thank you in advance if anyone has any insight into this...
-
I just spoke to the folks at CDW with regards to this laptop. They are basically out of stock and waiting for shipments at the beginning of April. When someone gets their hands on this laptop, please post a review. After talking to the guy he said only like 14 laptops were in back order, that total seems kinda small?
Also, they don't ship to shipping companies like Borderlinx, so I guess I'm out of luck... -

just found that website using google translator it says the 15 inch has a 400 nit screen and they already have a 256 gb ssd option along with a core i7 so looks like there definitely will be that option -

[/QUOTE]"]the features and some nice photos. 10 hours on battery! Also the specs (mainly in English). The RAM is 2 x 4GB so it will be dual channel (the 13.3" S9 is 1 x 4GB so single channel).
Samsung make the 256GB SSDs but I wonder if they have already sold most of their forward production to other ultrabook manufacturers (or Apple) and therefore don't have many to put in their own products. It's not beyond Samsung to agree to let others have the first run at a market segment. Remember that Samsung were slow to start selling notebooks in North America because an agreement with Dell whose X1 was a rebadged Samsung?
Regarding the i7 CPU, I would note that Notebookcheck expects (based on their benchmark list) the Ivy Bridge i5 3317U to be slightly faster than the Sandy Bridge i7 2637M (as currently listed for the C versions of the S9). Both are 17W parts. Higher speed 17W i7 Ivy Bridge CPUs may be a few months away depending on how quickly Intel can ramp up the production of chips that are both fast and low power.

This hasn't been released in North America yet..
They've never had stock..

Hey everyone, firstly, this is not a review so hopefully my technical wording will save me from english language sticklers.
This page went up yesterday. There is a shop link, though it leads to nothing. This link is basically nothing, but it relates to the Series 9 15" and is new so hey what the heck. It is for Best Buy Canada.
Windows & Samsung Series 9 Laptop - Best Buy Canada

@crackertime - sorry theres nothing on this page that shows the new S9 models. Canada gets new electronics the year after its introduced.
-
Hey no need to apologize for my lack of reading the whole thing. Because that page apparently went up last week, though I may have just misread that as well, I assumed it was about the new model. My mistake.

laptop mag has their full review up now...
Samsung Series 9 15 inch Review | Ultrabook Reviews -
As a lifetime Windows user let me take this oportunity to state why the only reason I have not put a Macbook Air into my shopping cart is the lack of a USB 3.0 port.
From the LaptopMag review above:
" Backlighting also leaves something to be desired. In fact, the only way we were able to make out the keys was because the screen was so bright."
So it's really not back-lit then is it?
" We think this is an issue with the Elan driver; when we disabled the driver, we were able to press down anywhere on the touchpad...and the touchpad was finicky--though we suspect it will improve with updates."
Let's see what year is it? Down in the lower right corner of my screen it says 2012, yet Apple is still the only company that makes a laptop touchpad that works. So either Apple is magical or the other companies and Microsoft simply don't care.
" we only wish it also included an adapter for the mini VGA port on the right side"
Shouldn't this be a Display port, or dare I write it, a Thunderbolt port? -
I second the comment about displayport. Wasny this laptop supposed to have it? Is thete an adaptor that converts that port to DP maybe?
-
@DVD9
In regards to the back-lit keyboard. The reviewer is saying that its was not needed since the screen is so damn bright. If you lower the brightness, I'm sure the back-lit will become useful then.
Apple can make a better touchpad because they create both the hardware and software; whereas PC has different hardward and software available to them. Sooner or later there will be a PC equivalent to Apple's superior touchpad. -

Even Samsung and Samsung Marketing doesn't know what to make of their own machine.
If you look at the pics at Gallery - Series 9 Notebooks NP900X3B | Samsung Laptops for the second generation 13", you'll see a micro HDMI port on one side, and a micro VGA port on the other.
Micro VGA? Nobody even makes a cable or dongle for that port. It appears the dongle at laptop accessories is for that port. Good luck trying to buy the dongle.
So instead of paying the license for DisplayPort and allowing everyone to connect to high-end LCD panels, they decided to limit the output to analog micro VGA or 1920x1080 via micro HDMI. After 90,000 hours of engineering thinking that was their conclusion? Bad choice.
Regarding the backlit keyboard, it's barely backlit. In a completely dark room, with the LCD panel brightness turned down to the lowest levels, it works. That is exactly what I was looking for, so it meets my needs.

This is one sexy machine, but $1500?!? I'm skeptical that it will sell well at that price.
I am very tempted to get the Samsung Series 9 but I'll wait to see how much the Vizio 15" ultrabook costs...the Samsung and the Vizio were the best looking ultrabooks announced at CES IMHO. -
Damn!
Just got backorder notice from CDNow... estimated ship date of 4/26/12...
Damn! They had just told me via phone that they expected a small shipment tomorrow and on 4/11...
dammn! -
This is two months old but I haven't seen it posted yet. Damn this computer looks good.

amazon also changed the item to pre-order, -
I ordered from amazon yesterday. The estimated date on my order is May 8 - 16.
I originally ordered with JR and paid with amazon payments, but after a month amazon payments cancelled the order. -
Does anyone have an idea of what it is Samsung gets from the way they do releases? I was originally waiting for the Series 7 before this was announced and it played out the exact same way. My original thinking was that at least it may prevent people from buying another brand in the mean time, but really I think the number of people like us who are waiting for it are vastly outnumbered by the mainstream population who doesn't even know it exists until it comes out. What was the original date again? I don't even remember anymore.

All of the communication I've seen indicated it would not be released for at least a month after the 13.3".
