My laptop doesn't detect express cache ssd. Another problem is that it can't turn off softly. I have long press the power button to shut down. It can't go to sleep when i close the lid. It also takes 5 minutes to boot.

Here is a screenshot that shows the listed disk in Disk Manager
    ssdProblem1.jpg

when i run the eccmd -info command, it gives me the following errors.
    HFS Volume is not mounted
ECCmd Requested device is not available

Try and install HWiNFO and see if it can detect the iSSD (the one used by ExpressCache). If so, check its SMART status to see how much wear is on the iSSD. It is possible that it has become worn out -- a few members have found that to happen.

Some members have also had problems detecting the iSSD after changing UEFI mode and re-installing Windows. COuld that apply to your situation?

Here is output for my issd. But it didn't show S.M.A.R.T report.

Odd that HWiNO doesn't show SMART status -- although it DOES detect the drive itself. But maybe this is a symptom of the same problem.

All I can suggest is to uninstall ExpressCache (AND Intel Rapid Start if you have that, since both use the iSSD). Don't mistake Intel Rapid Start and Intel Rapid Storage (no need to uninstall Intel Rapid Storage). Reboot after this.

Then download Minitool Partition Wizard and use it to initialize the iSSD, assuming Minitool can see it. After this re-install ExpressCache (and Intel Rapid Start if desired). ExpressCache should automatically create an HFS partition on the iSSD for its use. I don't have experience with Rapid Start, you'll have to refer to this thread for that.

If you are still unable to get the iSSD going after this, I think it could be defect. Again, a few other users have experienced the same, and the slow boot times are a symptom. Unfortunately there is no way to completely turn it off to avoid that.

BTW, was this laptop delivered with Win7 or Win8? And which OS are you running now?

It is delivered with Windows 7, it is running win 8.1 now. I will try what you said, i hope it works, otherwise i will have restore the factory defaults using recovery.

Yes, definitely try a factory restore if you cannot get it working with these tweaks. Samsung will almost certainly ask that as well if you contact them for service.

Unfortunately that iSSD cannot be repaired if it is defect, it requires a new motherboard. I cross my finger that is not the case here.

Did you update from Win7 to Win8 (and later Win8.1) or did you a new install of Windows?

That sucks. The only other cause I can think of (other than a defect iSSD) is if Windows 8.1 was re-installed and Setup decided to mess with the partition style of the iSSD. But that normally only happens if UEFI mode is changed in BIOS. We have had a few cases of that causing ExpressCache problems -- but Windows should still be able to see the iSSD regardless of partition style.

I updated from win7 to win8 then update to 8.1. No new install. It still has a warranty. I guess 3-4 months left. I will try recovery, if the problem isn't solved, i will take it to the Samsung service. Thanks for your help.

That's great, glad to hear you still have warranty. Also, the fact that you ran Windows updates (instead of re-install) and that you still have Recovery, means you have a clean case when you talk to Samsung.

    Please keep us posted.

I tried to recover using F4 button on start up. But it stucked on "Samsung Recovery Solution 4 - Please Wait" screen. I waited for more than 1 hour but nothing happened.
I will take it to the Samsung service tomorrow.

OK, I see. Samsung Recovery is (too) easily disturbed, and something must have broken it along the way. Samsung should still help you since you have warranty, and there is almost certainly some hardware defect involved here.

Make a good backup of all your personal files before it goes in for service.

If SRS is also broken then it's more likely they will re-image the drive.

It turns out that the problem was the motherboard. They replaced the motherboard and i got back the laptop today.

The ExpressCache chip is soldered onto the motherboard so, if that was the problem then they have to do a complete board change.

I don't know whether the boards then go to someone who has the capability to unsolder and replace the ExpressCache chip. If not, it costs Samsung a lot of money and explains why the ExpressCache didn't get carried over to the next generation of notebooks.

I think you are spot on there: Between replacement/refurbishing and support costs, I am sure that's exactly why ExpressCache didn't get carried over. Owners and reviewers of the NP770/780/870/880 models all point out how the 1TB HDD is the bottleneck of those otherwise fast and fairly high-end systems. ExpressCache would have helped a lot, as it did on their previous generations.
