One of my colleagues just bought a brand new Samsung 550p with i7 cpu and 8GB ram.
He brought it in to work for me to have a look at and I found something very peculiar. On idle with no other programs running, it's using 6.9GB of ram!!! If you look at the processes running, there is nothing obvious using all the memory and the process with the most memory is using 50mb, yet at the top of the screen it shows 80% of ram is being used.
I know it's new and he can take it back, but I wondered if anyone has any ideas.

Patience! No bumping posts until a day has elapsed. People aren't always sitting waiting to answer the questions.
My suggestion is to uninstall IntelliMemory. It's some form of caching program that might boost performance if people never use much of their RAM.

Definitely intellimemory. I thought it was causing problems on my system, so I removed it - but if you're not seeing any performance degredation, perhaps it would be worthwhile investigating exactly how intellimemory works. I doubt it would take the memory just to keep it, perhaps it is beneficial.
Whatever you do, don't sent "Silent mode" to auto or on. Leave it off. It actually seems to have no benefit whatsoever. -
Great stuff guys, thanks.
I've never heard of it and cannot find anything on the net about it?? What exactly does it do and why does it use so much resources?
It's ridiculous for a laptop with 8GB ram to be using most of it just sitting there. And it's slow as fk! Takes 4 times longer to boot than my 3 year old laptop and it just seems clunky. -

1. Yes, there's a shortage of info about IntelliMemory. I think everyone who has discovered it has uninstalled it.
2. Trouble-shooting the slow boot is another issue. Are the Samsung Fast Boot and other boot optimisations enabled in Easy Settings? Which AV program is being used? Give Soluto a try. it will tell you what is taking the time.
