My Samsung ATIV Book 7 just froze while updating the BIOS. It has been sitting there for over 3 hours now with no progress. And the time still reads 1:28pm, apparently when it froze.

I have tried shutting it down as per Samsung support via Twitter and I can not get the laptop to power off. I heald the power button down for over 5 minutes and nothing happened.

Also all inputs, Touch screen, Track pad and keyboard do not respond.

    Hi Quicksilver, welcome to NBR.

It definitely should have completed the update long time ago. The fact that it hasn't, unfortunately means there is a risk the flash has gone bad. Worst case, that can mean a bricked computer. But we have also had cases where members were able to turn the computer on again after forcefully shutting it down, and then successfully complete the BIOS update.

In order to turn it off (when holding the power button doesn't work) you will have to disconnect the battery, either physically (by removing the bottom cover) or by gently poking an unbent paperclip through the battery disconnect pinhole in the bottom (if your model has that). You should hear or feel a click when it disconnects. FIRST disconnect the power adapter!

I would recommend calling Samsung support before doing this or anything else. Not because I think they have any magic solutions, but because following their advice increases the chance that they will cover a repair free of charge, should that be necessary. They certainly SHOULD cover it, even if you are out of warranty, since you were simply performing an update using their procedure. But following the guidance of their support rep (instead of advice posted here) should help make your case.

We have had too many of these cases lately. For example see the recent thread linked below. When the time (hopefully) comes to retry your BIOS update, make sure to follow the advice in that thread to minimize the risk. Basically, DON'T update the BIOS in SW Update.

Please keep us posted on your progress.

If the computer is frozen but running then disconnecting the PSU will eventually result in it running out of power and stopping.

After that reconnect the PSU, let it charge a little and see if it will start.
