    So I just gave up on waiting for the +9 and bought the Acer S7. It had everything I wanted and the price was just reduced on Amazon.

    I may have to jump ship as well. I'm looking for something ~$1400. 8gb/256gb/i7, don't need QHD; heck I'm fine with HD+.
    I really don't want to go MBA but I need it by Aug 26th.

    Why are u taking so long Sammy?

    Then simply go with what is available and what's been already tested (NP900X3E if 4GB RAM is not a deal-breaker for you). Resolution apart, MBA is a great device but has a glossy panel, not a very bright one too. Very unimpressive if you look at the tests and videos in the outdoor daylight.
    I pre-ordered a great-looking (and even better advertised) device once after a long wait and more and more problems started to appear while using it, the whole XDA forum was full of unhappy users which would've been easy to learn had I waited a bit. It was/is ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity (TF700) which is a great device but suffers from poor eMMC performance which is the bottleneck for the whole thing.

    LOL :D

    I definitely took note of your report back then, and have been referring to it a few times since, because it really is the first time I've seen any reports of restoring Recovery with a 3rd party tool and maintaining F4. Good thing you added about this being on BIOS/MBR, not GPT/UEFI. Maybe it makes a difference, maybe not.

    I actually think a reason could be if you imaged (and restored) the entire drive (sector for sector) vs individual partitions. Maybe that will properly restore the partition table in a way that preserves F4. I am getting a new backup disk one of these days, and will be using that opportunity to do some renewed testing -- including this.

    Until then, my general recommendation remains to use Recovery and make a Bootable Factory Image Backup. It's like having Recovery on a stick :)

    And with that, I think it's appropriate to stop Recovery discussions in this thread. Feel free to continue in the thread linked below:

    The price is $1,399.99, but I have no clue on the specs since the product page 404's. It is likely to be the low-end version.

    If another one comes out before Sept, I'll cancel this one and upgrade.

    With that model number, it appears to be with:

    * Intel Core i5-4200U
    * 4GB DDR3
    * 128GB SSD
    * Intel HD Graphics 4400

    **Sent from my GALAXY NOTE II**

    I know the Samsung reps at the Best Buy stores are probably not reliable sources, but I thought I'd ask about the 9+'s availability. One of the reps there who is really looking forward to buying a 9+ himself said they'll have it in stock by mid-August.

    Yes, those were the specs listed when the page was up. Of course Samsung has yet to release the specs of any model themselves so I wouldn't bet the farm they are accurate.

    Meh #1: Thanks for the specs, and yes, I put in the pre-order before knowing the specs. I'm weird like that. I'm leaving the pre-order in for now, but I'll want 8 GB on the ram side. PS: I've never seen a '404 not found' error on Amazon before, like ever. Strange

    Meh #2: Never trust a retail store rep. That said, the mid-August time frame does sound right if the shipment date on my pre-order is real.

    Now if I can only make up my mind between the AB9+, Ativ Q and Zenbook Infinity. I like the Sony Pro 13 as well, but I have 2x Z21's already. I wish Sony went with a higher res screen because the touch panel and Haswell guts in the P13 isn't enough to justify the upgrade. I did, however, pick up a Sony Duo 13 last night and against all logic and apprehension, I actually like the form factor.

    It is an exciting time to be a gizmo junky

    Regarding the Zenbook Infinity. ASUS Sweden have said that it will be released in December. Mad! The 9 lite is now avalible in Sweden, so the 9 plus can´t be far away, thou it´s nowere to be seen on Swedish sites.

    The official retailer of Samsung Poland on their fb site has confirmed they will have an ad of the 9+ next week on their website, while the notebook itself will be available in the latter half of the month.

    Btw, I've been following this thread for a few weeks now and have just joined the forum, so this is the 'hello everyone' with my second post here.

    Mid august seems to be a pretty realistic date for either the US or UK.

    1. Samsung store rep said stock will be in by mid august
    2. Samsung's Facebook post said they are trying to get it released by august
    3. Amazon UK listed the release date as August 17th.

    I am in Singapore and here, Samsung said the B9+ will be released in Q4, which I hope is not true.

    If that is the case, they could miss the holiday buying period. My dollars are going to whomever gets the Qhd machines out first. Don't tell me about the Macbook Retina, I have some history there already.

    Sure hope Asus weeds out and hardware bugs. They don't need another Eee TF201 debacle.

    They just released the Zenbook refresh, the Touch UX31LA. I guess it´s their back to school product. Asus said the Zenbook infinity would be starting at 17000, witch pretty much is 17-1800 dollars

    Easy now. We want to keep a nice and respectful tone in this forum -- even when there is disagreement or (as in this case) disbelief.

    There are much nicer ways to ask member paulreedsmith where he saw that release information. It's only a few hours since he posted it. Thankfully some people have a life outside the forum :D

    These companies must be kidding. Impatiently waiting for one of these:
    - Acer Aspire S7-392
    - Asus Zeenbook UX31LA
    - Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus

    Discarded the Vaio Pro because of WiFi and noise problems,not a fan of the flexible chassis either, and Dell XPS 12 because I already own a Dell and got tired of their design. Also the rotating screen worries me, wonder how it'll go through time. Regarding specs, i7/8GB/256GB is what I'm looking for. Having 1500EUR to expend till 09/09 I hope it's enough.

    I know it's a design decision but won't it cause any damage in a laptop so thin? I read a lot of reports that you can feel the chassis flexing while typing. I plan to carry it all day around college, I fear that the motherboard brakes.

    I've been following this thread for a few weeks now I thought I better create an account so I can get involved. Originally I was after the Ativ Q but after hearing the rumoured specs around the book 9 plus and seeing the design I decided it's the device for me. However Samsung seem to be dragging out the release date for the higher speced model and so I have started to consider getting the Dell Xps 12 haswell refresh. Only thing putting me off at the moment is the slightly smaller display and not so classy design. Any one have any thoughts to share regarding the new xps 12?

    I don't recommend you sit on it or use it as a fulcrum to pry open a door, but they flex to prevent damage, not the other way round. I still use my Z2 daily and it has faired OK with daily trips to the office and the occasional drop. Just put it in a sleeve and don't worry about it.

    I would buy the Pro 13 personally if the screen rez was higher. I just can't rationalize the purchase over the Z2.

    I played with one at BB and agree the screen is a bit small. As a convertible, its still seems heavy as a tablet at 3.35 pounds. But I noticed they now have the 256 SSD upgrade for only 100 dollars. So you can get the i7 and 256 dell for around 1500. Probably going to get around 7 hours battery life with that. IMO, the touch and gloss is not needed in W8. I'm doing just fine on my new Ativ book 9 FHD matte without it. At that same price point, the older 3th gen i7 with 256 ssd and much nicer screen (FHD matte) and almost a full lb lighter seems a better deal to me. I am almost getting 6 house with the book 9 13" FHD. I've held both the dell and own the samy and I can tell you the book 9 is nicer and just looks so much more expensive and luxurious. That is the only way I can put it. The book nine is in a class of its own IMO. And for me, it just outshines all with that fantastic matte screen. I really hope they don't kill off the matte screen model. What a shame that would be.

    For what it is worth, I've been playing with the Sony Duo 13 since Saturday. Against all predictions to the contrary, I'm loving it. The keyboard isn't half bad and it runs cool and quiet in silent mode and running Outlook 2k3 and a few browser windows. I wish the screen was more adjustable though. You can have it open or closed and that's it. The screen hinge is made from a solid hunk of billet aluminium, so you would have to do something seriously wrong to break it.

    With the Ativ Q's higher resolution and "gabillion" viewing positions, I think it may be worth while if you like the Win 8 tablet mode.

    The Android OS on the Q isn't much more than a gimmick, IMO. Android virtualization isn't new, but I guess Samsung made it easier to use.

    You you look inside you will find that there isn't one big board but several smaller boards joined by ribbon cables. There Series 9 is also like this. One benefit is that if you break a port, which is on one of the daughter boards, then it's cheaper to fix.

    The reports of excessive fan noise at times is a deal killer for the Sony pro. And if your using anything with silverlight the fans go into a roar consuming insane amounts of power. I hardly ever hear the fan on my book 9. And if I do, its a very faint whir sound. Does not get hot either. Samsung's got the best ultra portable. Either wait for the haswell model or get the matte FHD now. Don't waist your money on crap from HP, Dell, or Sony. Just my opinion of course.

    Sony also charges too much for SSD/CPU upgrades and extended warranties. They make ok devices but are not worth the premium. Poor value for your dollars.

    Forgot to mention I live in the UK, I have briefly looked at the xps 12 in person and it did seem rather small and definitely not as attractive as the book 9. And after hearing all the reported problems on the xps owners thread I think I will be waiting for the book 9 plus. Although 256 ssd is a minimum and no one seems to have any idea when that model will be arriving in the UK, or anywhere for that matter.

    After bouncing around a bunch on what I want, from wanting the Zenbook Infinity to the ASUS N550JV-DB72T, I'm now waiting on this model to be released. Its either this or the Acer S7-392 for me, but I don't want to pull the trigger on the S7 before this comes out. Also, this website (I've never heard of it or used it) lists the availability for the US to start around Aug 20th Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus NP940X3G-K01USNP940X3G-K01US B&H Photo . I dunno how reliable that is, but I can't find anything else on possible release dates.

    Like another poster, I pre-ordered a 9+ on Amazon. The only way I found to do it was to visit the item page of a similar laptop until it showed the 9+ in the comparison box about halfway down the page. There is a button to "Add to Cart". I was then able to check out. I'm a bit concerned because it said:

    - 4GB of RAM,
    - $1399, which is $100 less than the Full HD, non-touchscreen version!

    ...however I'm hoping that the 404 response on the 9+ item page indicates that Amazon is unsure of the specs / details (waiting on Samsung), and that in fact it will be 8GB. I can't see how they could sell it at $1399 though without dropping the price on the Full HD, non-touch version by like $200. :confused:

    Amazon UK lists the release date as August 17th. A post from Samsung's Facebook also stated August as a release date. Mid to end August seems pretty likely for the US and UK.

    Which non-touch screen are you referring to? Sounds like the third gen i7 2.0 Samsung ATIV Book 9 NP900X3E-K01US that I just bought. But you have to remember, that model comes with 256 liteon SSD drive at the 1500 dollar price point. Remember that touch has increased component costs and adds another layer to the screen, as well as weight and thickness. The newer haswel may also have increased component costs from Intel. I'd be surprised if they priced them even with ivy bridge. But I think they priced that to move. I just don't understand why its such a big deal for these oems to make 256 more readily available. I'm sick of all the 128 ssd W8 machines already. Pathetic.

    Yep, I'm referring to the NP900X3E-K01US. I've been debating getting that instead, but the 4GB is really the killer there. I'd like to run VMs if possible, or at least know that my system won't be obsolete in a year due to low RAM! I can deal without the touchscreen, but I'm so used to my ipad that I'd prefer it, even if it means waiting a month or two. The SSD being 128 or 256 doesn't bother me too much because I can still repartition and dual boot to Linux with that much space. Obviously 256 would be better though. I'm OK with the 3 lb weight, as I'm coming from an ipad, which is almost 3 lbs itself! (I weighed it on my postage scale)

    So, yeah, I guess I'm confused too how the one I pre-ordered could be at the $1400 price point if it had all the features that the 9+ is supposed to have, given that the one you just bought is at $1500. I figured it was better to pre-order it, and then cancel it if it has bad specs, than to not pre-order it at all. I'm not in a huge rush. Honestly, I don't *need* it. I just *want* it. :D

    EDIT: Oh, and FWIW, it says on my Amazon orders that it ships on September 1. That could just be a rough estimate though, given that it lands on the start of that month.

    Does anyone know if the 9 series 13.3 inch models are RAM upgradeable? Like, if it comes with 4, can you upgrade to 8, or is it soldered in there?

    That's a great idea! I went ahead and preordered it as well on amazon. I'm willing to bet it'll arrive before then since that's the absolute latest that it'll come out (the end of Q3). It'll probably come out sometime mid August is my guess :) hopefully within this week! Maybe I'm being too optimistic :)

    Just be prepared for a high price on a high spec plus model. The ram is sodered so when they offer the 8 GB model it will also come with the i7 and 256SSD. I'm thinking a minimum of 1700 for such a machine. There won't be a cheaper version with 8GB ram and i5 with maybe 128 SSD. Generally I've seen Samsung pre configure these and there are not too many options. The 8 GB model will no doubt be decked out and expensive. For me, 1500 was the top of my budget. I also added a 3 year square trade for 190 dollars. So I'm already at 1700 myself.

    I think the reason one would consider the NP900X3E-K01US is the extreme light form factor. Thin as hell screen and matte which is such a rare thing these days. I really thought not having touch and W8 was going to be bad but I have no issues. As far as ram issues go I have not gone over 1.8 gigs yet. But .4 gigs is reserved for graphics I believe. That is with firefox open with maybe 5 tabs, winamp running or maybe iheartradio in the modern side at the same time and skype running. But running a VM would take allot more. For me, this machine is freaking fast. You definitely have to uninstall intellimemory. God what was Samsung thinking there? That took another GB of ram for no reason at all.

    8 gb of ram is super important for me because i keep 20 documents of word open and chrome is 18 tabs going. Samsung better allow you to customize it a bit.
