Sorry for posting this in the wrong section, but my laptop model does not have a dedicated thread. I have a Series 5 notebook, 14 inch with an AMD10 CPU. (NP535U4C-A01US) Anyways, I am trying to install a Samsung 840 Evo SSD using the data migration software that comes with it. Using the program, I cannot clone the OS, as I get an error stating that there was a problem when defragmenting the source disk. I ran a windows check, and did not find any bad sectors. Also defragmented my laptop too, but still it does not work. Any ideas, I have been stuck on this issue for so long now. Many users are experiencing this issue, but there does not seem to be a definite solution. Anyone with experience with Samsung SSD's and their data migration tool, I would be greatly appreciative of your help. I am running Windows 8.1 btw if it matters.

If I must resort to a clean install on the SSD, is there a guide on how to do it. Sorry, as I am a newbie in the SSD realm.

If your notebook has Samsung Recovery Solution 6 then that includes a Copy Disk option which some people have successfully used.

You will first need to shrink the C partition to below the SSD size (probably about 30GB below to allow room for the recovery partition etc). You can do this using Minitool Partition Wizard.

My notebook does not include a copy disk. I don't recall it having Samsung Recovery 6.

Your notebook would have shipped with Samsung Recovery Solution. If you have uninstalled it then you can get it through SW Update. However, it won't install if you have deleted the recovery partition. You should also be able to enter SRS by tapping the F4 key just as you are starting the computer.

If your computer originally shipped with Windows 7 then it may have SRS 5 which might not include the Copy option. However, it also wouldn't have had UEFI enabled and should be easier for other disk utilities to do the copying.

So my HDD right now is 750GB. I have only used 50GB. But would I still need to re partition the drive so it is below the 250GB SSD I have?

I think you will need to shrink that partition (try 100GB). I don't think the copying software is intelligent enough to look at the size of the contents. It's very quick and you can increase the size again once you have done the copying although I recommend using a configuration with a separate data partition. Then, if you ever need to restore the C partition you don't lose your data.

    Hi guys,

I recently purchased and installed a Samsung 840 EVO 256GB SSD. It was installed int a Samsung Series 7 laptop with a bay adapter so i was able to keep both the SSD and the stock 750GB HHD. I used the migration software and ended up with the OS on both drives but only running of of the C: drive (750GB HHD) while the SSD (Z :) is not really being used. Does anyone know how to change the drives so the SSD is what is booting the computer, if not does anyone have a good how-to to completely clean install everything??? Thanks a lot.

Did you go into the BIOS and change the boot order? If not, try that option.

You should also check whether the SATA interface serving the bay is SATA 3. If not, the SSD will be limited to 300MB/s. The fix for this is to put the SSD in the HDD slot and the HDD into the optical bay adapter (and would then need to return to the original boot order).
