Just got one.
Interested in sticking 2gb RAM in. Will it reduce battery length?
Post your info here. Hints, tips, tweaks, thoughts.
I'm a novice so sorry I can't start with much.
-
It will not reduce battery life.

In fact, it should increase it if you are running more applications than will fit in 1GB. In that situation more RAM will reduce the amount of HDD activity occurring when RAM contents are moved to and from the paging file on the HDD.
Most tips and tweaks will be as for the NC10.

Trustedreviews have reviewed the N110 too:

Hmmmmmm.....
All the reviews have the N110 keeping the same keypad as the NC10?
I have looked at the UK website's pictures, and the layout is the same.
My keypad is different to the UK Samsung's website N110 pictures! My shift key on the right is half size, and the enter key is different (being over two vertical rows but only one pad space wide.
I'm constantly mistyping like this \' instead of shift ' to give a @.
Not happy... why is my keypad not as the photos???? -
It's the same as the video i the trusted reviews site above. Would like the one in the website pics more! Just keep hitting \ instead of shift.

I just got my n110 this week and I'm wondering if I should install and security suite like NIS 2009 or go with AVG/Avast. I connect with a USB broadband card and so I have no firewall with my router. I'm not very knowledgeable with these kinds of things and sort of a noob
Is the N270 processor able to handle a security suite? I've read that NIS 2009 uses light on system resources.
Any help would be appreicated. -
Everybody has their own preferences for security.
Here's mine: Avira free edition (higher detection rates than Avast or AVG), Windows firewall, Windows defender, Noscript and Adblock plus in Firefox.
I would not pay for a package like NIS. -
Thanks Phil!
I'm going to go with your setup. I've heard good things about Avira. -
There's only one downside to Avira: it installs an annoying popup.
Here's how to disable it: http://www.wikihow.com/Remove-the-Popup-Ads-in-Avira-Antivir -
Hello to all members of this forum.
i am new around here. I hav bought the samsung N110 and i have ecounter some issues i would like to share with you and find some answers.
First of all i would like to say that i am very pleased with the netbook. Its my first one and generally my first portable PC. I like the glossy screen, the keyboard and the touchpad. also the webcam is very good.
Now to go on with the issues i mentioned before.
1) I read somewhere that overclocking is not possible. Ok i am fine with that. Its not something that i will miss.
2) The touchpad is not multitouch. I am a bit disappointed about that but ok. Its not big deal
3) I want to upgradde my memory to 2GB. Which brand are you suggesting?
Does it matter to be sychronous with the fsb or not? The 1GB module that was equipped with has 800MHz bus but it has also 2 more states, 533 and 667. Its run on 533 thus its 1:1 with the fsb which is also 533. I have read that the dimm banks also support for 667. In that case it wont be 1:1. Does this matter or not? I dont know if the 2GB module that i am going to buy will also have another mode (533) like the one it was installed from the beginning.
4) I have an issue with the battery. I did a recalibration at first and i saw a 5% wear of the battery. I have used the battery for the last 15 days and now it reports a 10.2% wear. I have bought the laptop on 16 May and the wear is ridiculous!
5) I have problem using the laptop with installing its battery. The battery itself uplifts the netbook a bit and its very helpful for writing. Otherwise its flat and also its not so good ventilated because the openings for the heat are being blocked. I have read that its not good to have the battery installed when using the laptop from the power outlet. I dont know what to do for this reason. Is there a program that will charge the battery lets say to 40% and then stop the process? or something in order to have the battery along with the main power but not charged at 100%?
i dont think that the netbook is getting too hot in order the temperture to mess up withe the battery. I have read that in a period of one year at 25C the battery will lose 20% and 40% at 40C
6) Is it possible to increase the shared memory to more than 128MB?
7) How AHCI drivers can be enabled in order for the NCQ to be activated? I have read that the on board chipset supports NCQ.
Thanks and sorry for your trouble -
1) Not sure. My NC10 is overclockable with SetFSB. I wouldn't be surprised if yours uses the same clock generator.
2) Are you sure? Try his driver and tell us if it worked: http://code.google.com/p/two-finger-scroll/downloads/list
3) Brand doesn't matter. Speed doesn't matter, just get the cheapest.
4) That's a lot so fast. But I don't think it's enough to claim a new one. You could try though. I suggest waiting.
5) As far as I know there is no such program. Samsung developed one for N120 but that doesn't work for N110.
6) I don't know, but I don't think there's any benefit.
7) I don't know. -

Re. 4: You should try disabling the critical battery action under the power properties and then let the battery run until it is completely empty, then recharge and repeat. This may recover some of the lost capacity. It worked for me on another Samsung notebook.
Re. 5: I think you will discover that the battery does not recharge until the charge level has dropped below ?96%?. So, if it is left plugged into the mains it will only top up once every a few days.
John -
1) i read that it has another clock generator and also is not supported by setfsb
2) i have tried that and its not working. its simple is not a multitouch pad
4) recalibration and
i think that the 5% wear is the initial condition of the battery....
5) are you sure about the 96%?
because i think it always charges up to 100% and then light goes green thus stops charging....
i dont want to have it all time 100% thats why i turn of the mains and use the battery all the times. i think its better to use the battery than constantly leave it 100% charged -

Congrats my friend, how are you enjoying it?
Any regrets? -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
When the battery charges it goes to 100%. However, it won't recharge again until the charge drops below 96%.
The N120 has battery extender software which allows the user to specify the maximum charge level. You can try this, but i understand that it needs BIOS support.
John -
Is it a Synaptics touchpad?
-
yes very much. not at all, no regrets although i spent 350£. for 358 I could have bought the N120 but i concerning its worst screen, the different placing of some keys and its bigger size i bought this one instead.
i dont have a problem with the keyboard. i am typing quite fast to be honest without any errors.
yes that was my understanding too. does anyone know of any third party program that has the same functionality? or it has to do with the BIOS thing?
just wondering
yes but it doesnt support multitouch. thats what the program said anyway -
I want to know about the touch pad too... guess an email / call to Samsung may clear it up.
As for the battery extender, it is odd beyond belief that the 120 gets it and the 110 doesn't. It can't really be a cost issue as the software is proprietry. There must be a reason Samsung decided not to use it???
On the subject of the touchpad, my Dell laptop has a nice scroll bar that works slowly and responds to the touch.
My N110's scroll bar either shoots the whole page, or jerks about and goes too far. It is a REAL pain to use. It doesn't mirror what my finger does, as there is some sort of lock on it if you hold it too long. -
Worse screen? Worse in what way? Having had a few of these things, I don't see where the N120 display is worse? Also the tilde and the windows keys are moved, how does that TRULY impact ones ability to touch type? The bigger keyboard is better hands down basically 92% vs 97% , almost full size.
I think the only real advantage the N110 could have had was if they would have kept it with a matte display as that appears to be what most prefer. But instead they gave it a gloss display just like the N120 and NC20. -
Ok, you may want to try this driver:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/9n9c6i
It worked for the almost 4 year old Asus laptop in my signature. -
i dont have a problem with the virtual scrollbars at all
also its not only the battery extender program that does not work.
The resolution changer does not work either
so no 1024x768 for anything but the N120
thats what the german site said according to their measurements
to be precise 3 buttons have been moved. the key next to 1, the windows key and the key with the backslash. I have the UK layout. i dont know about the US
i didnt say that the N110 keyboard is better than the N120. i just said that it does not have these awkward key placements
i prefer the glossy screen to be honest. i dont have a problem with the reflections. its not that distracting. the N110 is less bulkier. -
Have you tried Firefox with enabled smooth scrolling?
If that doesn't satisfy you try the Addon Yet another smooth scrolling
Also in the configuration panel, sensitivity of the scroll bar can be changed.
Here's an alternative Synaptics driver that works on the old Asus laptop in my sig.
http://www.sendspace.com/file/9n9c6i
You may want to try it. -
Yeah I've seen that information on that German site and statistically it maybe better, but I'd have to really question rather anyone viewing both and using both could actually see what they report and after all what you see is all that is important, those numbers in reality mean nothing!
All I am saying is the key changes that were made in my view are really not awkward if it doesn't really impact ones ability to touch type. I do think the n120 has a better keyboard because it is larger and much more comfortable to type on.
Less bulkier by barely a half inch with the weight being the same. Having used both unless you had them side by side, you really wouldn't notice the difference, so that is a mere perception more than reality.
However, with all that said, I am glad you are happy with your N110, it hasn't gotten much love and doesn't seem to be selling that great. Though that could just be my perception. -
Hi there.. I just got my n110 as well after a month of research. I wanted to wait for the netbooks with NVidia Ion chipsets, but needed one for work and couldnt wait till the end of the year, so here I am.
I too, have some issue with the trackpad.. not only does that first driver listed not work, but sometimes it seems to register ghost movements and jumps around. Then again, I could just be getting used to it. I will try the new drivers listed in that sendspace link and get back to you. Cheers!
-sh0 -
Ok... so installed the specially modified Synaptics drivers... (the touch pad is deffo Synaptics) and cannot find any settings for two finger scroll.. re downloaded the TwoFingerScroll drivers, and it still reports that multiple fingers arent being recognized.
-
This model does not have a multi-touch touchpad! So it isn't going to work!
-
The modded Synaptics driver supports several multi finger gestures. You have to activate it. (Control panel, mouse, device settings, settings > two finger gestures & three finger gestures)
If you want the page to go down with a two finger downward gesture you can specify that.
You don't need the two finger scroll driver. -
Yes, but that is what he wants to get working as that is probably one of the best features of these multi-touch touchpads, though like the N120 I don't believe the N110 supports it or any of the features for that matter, though I've never tried the modded synaptics driver, I have the current one available downloaded and installed.
I recall on my ASUS 1000HE downloading just the driver from Synaptics web site not only worked, but provided all the multi-touch gestures and two finger scrolling, which would indicated to me the device (touchpad) must support it. -
I'm saying you don't need that driver to get it working. The modded driver has similar capabilities.
-
Even if the trackpad itself doesn't support it? That is my point I am of the opinion that the trackpad on the N120 and N110 does not have hardware support for said driver!
-
The modded driver is working on my 4 year old Synaptics touchpad on the Asus in my sig. At that time multi touch did not even exist.
But hey maybe the driver isn't working on N110/120. But sh0nuff said he installed it. He just couldn't find the setting. So I pointed him to it.
Have you tried installing the modded driver? -
So perhaps you don't need a modded version if your computer actually has a touchpad that supports it, because mine apparently does not.
Maybe I am wrong, but my understanding is that the hardware had to support multi-touch for it to work as I've read many having installed this modded version on various models but none of the gestures or 2 finger scrolling preferences show up in the setup. I'll take your word for it and we'll wait to hear what sh0nuff discovers.
If he/she says it works, I may give it a try as I've only installed the latest release version of the driver, which isn't modded. But my experience with my ASUS would indicate if the hardware supports it you don't need a modded driver to get this functionality. -
I'm getting confused!
As an owner, I'd like to see the simple yes this works / no it doesn't.
There is a lot of speculation on here about it wont / will / could do / try this...
Hopefully an owner will give a definative answer, with the download installed and the settings followed.
I wont volunteer as I am a relative novice and am wary of trying to install too much by way of fear I can't easily remove it all if it doesn't work. \looking forward to the real answer!!! -
OK someone who wants to try it here are the instructions: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=218872
On my Asus it looks like this:
-
Well I have the modded one installed, and under Control panel, mouse, device settings, settings, there is no mention of two and three finger gestures. I have "Overview, Tapping, Buttons, Virtual Scrolling, Pointer Motion and Sensitivity" -
Clearly this modded driver does not work with the N110 or N120. I appreciate you trying it out though! It will save many of us having to even try it.
-
new bios Win_NC10_10CA06D0.exe
check for new driver updates and software on samsung official page.
check the date of the driver instead of looking the version -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
But also check the date of the contents of the file.
In the past Samsung periodically put new dates on old drivers. A newer version number is the best indicator of something new.
