Samsung N120 - Now Available

Yeah, I had a 2gb stick in my NC10 SE and I swapped it over to the N120 this evening, no problems whatsoever. I know people say it doesn't really make a big difference. But I just think it makes these little notebooks a bit more snappy and especially if you have multiple applications going. I wouldn't leave home with out it! hehehe

 

Do you know if a netbook is capable of running Second Life?

 

So far I see N120 has good quality sound. How MANY speakers does it has. A base speaker and 2 other speakers or a base speaker and 1 other speaker? I want to find out if I can get stereo sound through the speakers. If not, will I get stereo sound by using the head phone or connect to external speakers.

 

Would Samsung update this model or the NC10 to include Nvidia's Ion platform before September?

 

I tried out the NC10 last night
A little slow.. I have small girl hands (my ring size only 6).. I had trouble typing on the keyboard.. It is too small.. N120 all the way

 

OTACORB (and others): thanks you so much for putting this information and photos online. I really appreciate this community's input on these netbooks. I recently read Laptop magazine's review on the n110 as the netbook to beat, and was ready to plunk my money down on this, when the n120 made its debut. I really appreciate the posts and discussions about these machine from people who have far greater expertise and experience with this technology than I. I will now have to decide between the n110 and the n120. my wife has the levono s10 and i love its small footprint.

My question to the community is this: is the n110 the same size as the n120 (width?). the photo comparision of the nc10 and the n120 is informative, but can anyone advise me if the nc10 and n110 are the same size, and therefore smaller than the n120?

my point is, if the n110 and the n120 ARE the same dimensions, then i will buy the n120 because it has more plus's. however if it is approximately the same dimensions as the lenovo s10, i may be tempted to get the n110 and forgo the larger keyboard and slightly?? longer battery life.

does this sound reasonable? suggestions and input welcome and thoughtfully appreciated. thanks

 

Reportedly the N110 is the same size as the NC10. In fact it's basically a less expensive NC10 SE with a colored stripe on it.

 

Have you seen the 6 cell battery for it though?

The 2140 is another 6 cell debacle...

 

The NC10 and N110 are the same size, so that means that there will be about 1/2" difference between either one of those and the N120, which is a tad bit wider to accomodate that bigger keyboard! 1/2" is no big deal in my book!

This has always been a problem with most of HP's computers. When you get these add on batteries, they are big, bulky and really inconvenient. They may have great keyboards and cases, but I'd still take the Samsung over it everytime.

PC Nation says in Stock but it is on backorder until at least the 24th. Amazon has a ship date of the 29th at least. Where did everyone get theirs right away? It is impossible to order one.

 

Linda, when I ordered mine from Amazon it showed a ship date of a week later, but shipped the same day! Not sure why there system is doing that. The black and white were in stock, now it shows the white hasn't been released. But they do have the black in stock with only 3 left, I wouldn't wait! I got mine overnight with 2 day shipping because of my proximity to the warehouse.

 

Linda are you searching for the n110 or the n120? I see they are available in white for the n120 at pcnation. Although Buy.com has them beat by about 5 bucks and free shipping.

 

OTACORB, my main concern is the size and of course battery life is a plus. Would you say its hardly noticeable the size of the n120 vs the nc10 you have? Just wanting something that I can easily stuff in a backpack, etc. I currently have a dell xps m1210 which is pretty small for a 12" laptop but it measures about 11.5" wide and weighs upwards of 5-6lbs with the 9cell.

 

Check out their return policies, just a word of caution! Those places maybe fine, just making a suggestion!

No difference whatsoever to me. The weight is the same and 1/2" wider, so unless you just have them side by side, you'd never know its any different and even then you can't tell. You have to stack one on top of the other to really see it. N120 is 10 3/4" wide and weighs 2.8 lbs. NC10 is 10 1/4" wide and weighs 2.8 lbs that is with the battery installed!

 

Thanks for the quick reply. Agreed I will read over the return policy. Amazon is my favorite but they are approx. $30 higher and say out of stock. Do these also take the same RAM as the NC10?

 

What are people's thoughts on the introduction of a subwoofer into a netbook?

To me, it seemed kind of silly. Does the shock from the subwoofer not in any way possibly damage components? Especially the hard drive? I wonder if there is a way to disable the sub.

Also, HOLY CRAP that keyboard is stupid. WHY would they move the windows key there? WHY move the tilde?

 

You must be wanting a white one, because the black ones are in stock at Amazon, $30 is worth a good return policy to me, but everyone is different. I know when I get something from them I am covered, no so sure about some of these other places. Yes, it takes the same ram as the NC10, which uses PC6400.

Not silly at all, because it gives the sound a much deeper dimension and quality compared to all the other netbooks I've had. It is basically a bit larger bass speaker on the left front side of the case, which adds a bit of bass to the sound. It isn't going to thump, bump or vibrate the case or your hard drive. But in my opinion does make the SQ much better. I have not checked to see if it can be disabled, because I see no point in even getting the n120 if I was going to do that.

You know I don't think many people ever use either one of those keys very often. If I was going to move some keys those would be good ones to move. The windows key, I think having that is stupid period. I've never used it and don't know anyone that does honestly. Tilde key is the same place it is on my high dollar Lenovo T400 Business Notebook.

 

I called Amazon and they said Friday. I called NewEgg (no return policy), PCNation and a couple others. All out. I want white, you are all correct.

I just sold my Blue NC10 at work this morning in 10 minutes for what I paid plus the upgraded 2gb. I love the machine, but really want the larger keyboard and can't resist the longer battery, although I got great life doing the commuting thing.

So....I sucked it up and spent $469 on ebay with a return policy for a reputation company with a return policy (I called them) who has white in stock and is shipping tonight (free ship), so it will be an even trade with my NC10.

I've had good and bad luck with waiting around for Amazon. Since I seem to not be able to live without this little machine now, I do want it right away.

 

Anybody who currently has an N120 can you speak about the battery life?, I know someone mentioned earlier about the battery life showing approx 9:40 but fluctuating. Can anyone else give their 2 cents? Does it seem to hold a good charge?

 

There are some very good Ebay sellers so, I wouldn't hesitate to buy from one of them if they provide a good return policy. Sounds like you certainly got a decent deal, maybe not as good as you could have, but since you are wanting it sooner rather than later that is what happens. I am like that, not very patient when I want something. hehehe

I think for most of us that have bought this machine it is still a bit early to say for sure. I plan to give mine a good testing over the next day or two. I know last night on and off I played on mine for 6 hours and it still showed I have 40% of the battery left. This using the backlight at about 50% (which is plenty bright) with the max battery saver mode. I am very happy with it thus far, but only time will tell how it really pans out. I am thinking real time use is going to end up being around 8 or so hours.

I've been debating all day and now both the blk and white are out. Oh well lets hope some new stock hits soon. Buy.com def had the best price but now everyone appears out.

Can I ask the reputable ebay dealer? Always a little weary of buying a large purchase from an ebay dealer, not the best past experiences.

 

That is what I did on Amazon on Monday... ordered it paid for 2 day shipping, but got it overnight.

When these things first come out it is true if you snooze you loose. I knew when I seen it come up on Amazon, I was going for it. They had both black and white initially, but I knew I wanted the black because I'd be using mine sometime for business trips etc. Everyone sitting around the table with their nice black business machines and you whip out your white Samsung! Nah I'll pass! hehehe Honestly if I was going to use it just at home or was female I might have gone for the white one.

I do have to say there is nothing real pretty about this machine, but the functionality is right on! I've used mine from the time I opened it up till I went to bed and been showing it off all day around the office using it. It's like the freaking energizer bunny it just keeps going and going. I think my office is who bought Amazon out of the black ones this afteroon. LOL

Unlike the NC10 and many others netbooks out there it isn't real shinny or attention getting, but I can't tell you how nice it has been not having to wipe this thing off a half dozen times today, especially as people tried it out.

This will be my first Netbook purchase.

 

yep, without this thread I would have had no idea. Like I say there has been no recent info from an actual user on this laptop that I could find on the web. Many of the review sites still call it the nc120 and have the specs all over.
I called pcnation and they said they were out of stock even though inventory said they had it online. Glad you got one, be sure to write back your thoughts once you get it.

 

Has anyone else noticed that most of the sound (even high frequencies) seems to come from under the N120 on the left and not from the two small speakers on the sides of the LCD?

 

The windows key is very useful when, well, running Windows at least.

For example, windows key + D will minimize all windows. Windows key + E will open up my computer. Windows key + R initiates the run command.

 

Well yes and no, I think with talk and stuff it appears to come more from that left front side, but all this is adjustable. Go in to the SRS Control Panel and change the SRS from SRS 3D to Megawide or Extreme and you'll notice the volume more balanced between the speakers and the subwoofer. Music wise I prefer the SRS 3D setting, but for talk or news stuff I like the Megawide. You can also adjust the Focus this seems to reduce that loudness of that subwoofer.

Well I've always known about those things, but I guess it is just something I don't use. I see your point, but in reality moving the key from the left to the right side is that REALLY a deal breaker? I think that is my point regardless of if you use the key or not.

 

Well, the saga continues, but it's coming. I thought Amazon had cancelled my order since they didn't have any white in stock, and then I get an email, it's being shipped today!! Will be here tomorrow (I paid for next day ship). Then the ebay buyer is sending his. Luckily, I called him and it hadn't gone out yet, so he refunded my purchase. Nice guy.

So...Amazon does have white in stock. The customer reps don't know it-- but the end people do. Can't wait to get it tomorrow )

 

Well it is great that you were able to head off the ebay seller prior him sending his and was able to get the prompt refund.

Amazon's web site sometimes isn't accurate I've discovered that a while back. Just like when I ordered mine it said it would be a week before it shipped, yet it shipped that same day and I got it the next.

Well, as of this morning, PCnation.com doesn't have any. They are expecting the white in Friday and the black may be a week or two even. So I cancelled my order since I had finally decided on black vs. white. They were very apologetic on the phone.

 

Linda, I pre-ordered from Amazon based on your comment. I'm hoping the folks in the stock room realize they have them and ship it out soon. Anybody purchase a case for the n120?

When did you order it? Because if they have them it's usually shipped the same day provided it is ordered early enough in the day!

 

Regarding Ram, does the Mhz of the Ram need to match the speed of the fsb? And if not, does making it match give better results?

 

After seeing your order with PCNation ($438.08 Free 3-Day FedEx) I actually tried to cancel mine with ANTOnline via Amazaon ($447.35+$11.04 7-Day shipping). Who wouldn't want it for $20 less and a few days faster?

But I guess I'm glad I wasn't able to cancel it. As of now, it's supposed to ship today or tomorrow and estimated to arrive 4/31 - 5/01. I can't wait!

Samsung actually uses 800 MHz RAM, though the motherboard only supports up to 533 in the current setup. It down clocks that PC2-6400. Most memory sites also recommend this same RAM. Some have replaced their 1GB stick with some of the exact 533 requirement and it seems to work just fine. It seems though the thought is that the 800 RAM gives it a little edge on performance, now rather that is true or not, I have no idea.

OTACORB, I ordered mine from Amazon about 11:15pm (EST) last nite. I haven't received any word yet, I'm crossing my fingers and of course doubting my color choice of "white". Ive had black laptops for years so thought I would change things up a little.

Also, with this extra time of waiting I keep debating if its worth it to spend approx. $70 more for the n120 or just buy the nc10. I rarely take many trips which would require 9-10 hours of batt. life. But I guess its like having a 4x4 you don't really need it, but its nice to have when you do. sorry for the rambling. I'm hoping someone else can make up my mind
