I just put my NC10 on sleep and after some random time, it starts up.

I'm pretty sure that I'm not pressing the power button, even by mistake.

Do any of you have the same problem?

Sleep can get interrupted by software checking for updates. I always use hibernation.

I noticed the issue too... Only to notice that the problem doesn't happen when the netbook is on AC. I realized it was an issue with the energy management settings. I then timed how long it would take to wake up -- in my tests, it was 10 minutes. My netbook had been set to off hard disks after 10 minutes when on battery. It is my hypothesis that this is the culprit for when I disable all of the automatic energy management, my computer sleeps just fine.

I also own a Thinkpad T43 and despite having the same options enabled, it doesn't wake itself back up. I'm not sure why this is an issue with the NC10.

Thanks Neo. That seems to have solved the problem

I always have the timeouts set as:

    1. Display (eg 2 minutes)
    2. HDD (eg 5 minutes)
    3. Sleep (eg 10 minutes)
    4. Hibernate (eg 20 minutes)

It is unusual to have the HDD timeout set longer than the sleep. I don't think Microsoft ever had that in mind when designing the power management software. It means the computer has to wake up to put the HDD to sleep!

John, that is similar to how both my Thinkpad and Samsung are set up; there is a progressive amount of power saving as you move from the display, to HDD, to sleep, etc. However these computers exhibit differing behavior when it comes to this setup.

I suppose it's not a problem when you let Windows run through this criteria, but when you manually set the computer into standby (either by pressing Fn-Esc or by closing the laptop lid, as I have it set to go to standby when closing the lid) that the problem presents itself.

Like I mentioned, on my Thinkpad, once the computer goes into standby, that's it, nothing else happens. However, with the Samsung NC10, it is still counting down its timer, and after the necessary amount of time for the HDD sleep, it wake up again. Is this a Samsung problem, or is there something in Windows that should be configured properly?

Good point about manual standby upsetting the sequence.

If I can replicate it then I would classify this as a bug (since it doesn't happen on other computers) and I will pass it to Samsung support (but the more people who do this then the quicker they might take action).

    John

PS: I have been trying to replicate this, without success. My NC10 appears to go straight from sleep to hibernate after the due time delay. Of course, the HDD has to come on while the computer is hibernating, but nothing shows on the display.

Have you updated to the latest BIOS (03CA?)

Yup, I'm updated to the latest BIOS.

Might I suggest a series of step to confirm?

Go into the Samsung Battery Manager, and select the Normal Profile -- confirm that the the "Normal Profile" power scheme has for on battery (off power, or 'off mains'), and has 5 minutes for the display, 10 minutes for the HDD, etc.

Then take your NC10 off mains, and manually set it into standby with Fn-Esc (confirm that your computer is in standby with the blinking blue power light). Start your timer and wait approx. 10 minutes.

Around the 10 minute mark, other lights start flickering and the power light turns steady. If I wait some more, then the other timers kick in and eventually the computer sends itself into hibernation where I believe that's the end game.

OK. I've done exactly what you requested.

I see that, around the 10 minutes, the HDD light (and maybe some other lights) does briefly flicker then there is a short gap (?20? seconds) before there is more HDD activity (ie the hibernation) and then the lights go out (and everything is off).

I suspect what is happening is that there is a process of waking up from sleep, checking the system, closing any open processes that should not be left open during hibernation and then the hibernation itself.

I wouldn't get too worried about what happens during this period of transition from sleep to hibernation. Other computers probably do the same without it showing. Perhaps it is not necessary to start up the HDD at the beginning of the transition.

For anyone that is interested I had this problem as well while running XP. Once I fresh installed Vista I no longer experience the auto wake.

Mine comes on as well when transitioning to hibernate from sleep. If it was playing some audio when you put it to sleep or playing a youtube video, you'll hear it for however long it takes to turn off. ;)

Since it is so fast to come on from hibernating, I just hibernate it directly. Here's how:

    1. Click Start, and then click Turn off computer.

    2. Press and hold the Shift key. The label under the first button on the left changes from Stand By to Hibernate.

    3. Click the Hibernate button.

Same here, but different method. I change the power properties (advanced settings) so the sleep button (Fn+Esc) is hibernation.

If I just want sleep then I can close the display.

    Hi!

    I've got the same problem.

I don't remember if it happened early, when I had just bought the notebook. I probably had pidgin and skype installed back then.

Changing the power management settings didn't solve the problem. Standard settings got overwritten by the Samsung BatteryManager, and even setting the custom one to 3min/hd 10min/standby 15min/hibernate didn't work. The pc always wakes up after some minutes. It seems not to happen some rare times, or when I'm on AC power (but maybe just coincidence).

    I'll try these:

    • Power management settings without hd stop or hibernate (has not resolved the issue, but has restricted the scope of the problem)
    • Latest windows updates (has not resolved the issue)
    • Try some different BIOS settings
    • Disable wifi before sleep (has not resolved the issue)
    • Close running software (such as pidgin, skype, gtalk) (has not resolved the issue)

Update: Updating xp sp3 to the lates updates seems to have resolved the issue for now. I'll have this confirmed after some everyday use. Configuration is: standard most-saving BatteryManager profile, disabled lan (not wifi), enabled wifi, pidgin, skype, gtalk, chrome in background.

Update: After some seemingly positive standbys, where the notebook has woken to enter hibernation as it should, it has woken only to remain in the login screen, like before; the problem still is there.

I've tried entering standby without wifi, and without running programs, with no luck.

I've tried a custom power management mode which does not hibernate (5min/screen, 30sec/hd, 10min/standby, no hibernate) and it perfectly remains on standby. So, it is auto-hibernation which does sometimes not kick in.

What should I do now? What do you suggest could be tried to manage the issue? Samsung technical support?
