Is there any store in UK that have the price left on £299?
-
I'm going to keep a white one. If anyone wants a black one drop me a line.
I've put an ad here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=4210741#post4210741 -
i dont think my white nc10 has a speck of dirt on it.
i chose white because its least lightly to show cat hairs on it with my cat being white n'all
but then again i also havent even removed the plastic sheet on the lid, or the plastic sheet covering the screen.
my wireless is also atheros.
my own personal note on the installation/upgrade of ram on teh nc10 is that its incredibly easy. the hardest part being actually opening the little door which has plastic things holding it in place and they are quite diffuclt to free on mine.
i personally never use hibernate so the extra ram doesnt bother me in that regard. -
Thanks Brian for the help. Your instructions advice me to get an external usb CD/DVD writer. Which one do you recommend.

Atheros here as well.
Not as stiff as on a big notebook, but there's a lot less screen to hold in place. If you can shake your NC10 with the display open and the display gradually moves then i would say it is too loose.
If you want a stay-at-home burner then look for a desktop unit with USB port. if you want portability then the LG GSA E50L (Lightscribe) or E50N (no Lightscribe) is probably the best.
John -
Both the models I had have this. I don't mind though.
-
same thing with my hinge.
Did you guys see the price for the nc10 went up by $50 on eBay in the last few days? -
Now that the blue ones are becoming available in the US, I think I'm going to pick one up, unless anyone knows if/when black will be available. I'm going to wait until at least Monday though to see if there are any cyber Monday deals.
One thing I like about my current netbook, an ASUS Eee 701 4G, is the ruggedness of the SSD. I've dropped it a few times, and I usually leave it on, close the lid and carry it around (it's set to go to sleep after 10 min). I don't need 160GB of storage space, so I'm thinking I might swap the HD out with an SSD, upgrade to 2GB of RAM and grab an external optical drive. I managed to load XP and other software using a USB stick on the Eee, but it was kind of a pain. I have a $200 gift card from Dell that I as a promotion when I purchased an M1330 in December last year. I ended up having problems with it and after receiving a replacement and having the same problem I got a refund. They sent me the gift card anyway, and I need to use before it expires at the end of the year.
This drive, at 64GB, is more than enough space for me, the specs look good and has good reviews. Any thoughts?
I can use the Dell gift card to buy an external CD/DVD+RW, BT mouse and 2GB of RAM from them. They have an IO Magic external, USB powered, DVD drive for $82. Newegg has a Samsung USB powered one for $50, but no reviews. There's a similar Samsung USB drive with LightSribe, but it has one review which is not so good. I think I'll go for the one at Dell anyway, since it's no money out of my pocket, and the reviews there are positive and mostly from Mini 9 owners. The RAM there is not much more than at NewEgg, and again it's free to me since I have the gift card. -
Catchafire:
Sorry, it wasn't a recommendation... it was what I thought you might have..
USB sticks can be bought cheap on line... 4 or 8 Gb from £7.00 to £12.00 depends where you usually shop.
Not at the same time -(!) I bought two external CD/DVDs' one from Maplins, a standard Internal DVD 4x burner in a 'box' for around £40.00 but decided that for travelling, the other from eBuyer, a slimline 'Emprex' 8x Burner, for £32.00 was much better. The BOXy one has psu built in; the slimline has a wee mains psu - so it doesnt take up much room in my shoulder bag.
The Choice is yours..

How even is the backlight on your NC10?
I have a blue NC10 and when the screen is pure white the screen has two circular patches where the backlight isn't even, they almost look like two light grey finger prints. -
sonoritygenius Goddess of Laptops
hey guys, I got a special alert from Buy.com for sever price drops among them was the Samsung NC!
Samsung NC10-14GW Netbook Intel Atom 1.6GHz, 1GB, 160GB HD, 10.2" Widescreen WSVGA, 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth, Windows XP Home (White) - NP-NC10-KA01US = $489 = good price? -
I've also been trying to use the wireless this weekend and it's been spotty. I also tried to use it with a linksys wireless-B router and could not get it to connect - is it possible it won't?
Steven -
No, it's not. You get a better deal at Amazon sans the tax.
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-NC10-...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1228017689&sr=8-1 -
I'd go with NewEgg, it's the same price, and with free 3 day shipping (only on white though). With the free super saver shipping offered by Amazon will take over a week to get it. I just added one to my cart on Amazon, with free shipping the estimated ship date is Dec. 4, then add the 5-9 days to deliver it. I switched it to standard shipping and it changes the delivery date to Dec. 5 at a cost of about $12.

The loose hinge on the Samsung NC10 ------- why isn't this being mentioned in the reviews? (e.g., laptopmag.com's review)
Also, in general, are most netbooks/notebooks supposed to have tighter hinges? Or are they generally loose? It's good to compare the NC10 in context of other devices ----- maybe it's loose for a reason. If it were too tight, then people would complain that it's hard to open the computer. -
Do you think with future processor upgrades, that it will be at all difficult to update the processor?
And yeah, my wireless connector could be a little better. -
Ahh, well, I am not a fan of purchasing laptops and LCD monitors from newegg (don't like their return policy). However, I do have Amazon Prime so you are right, you might be able to get it sooner from newegg. If (almost) instant gratification is your thing.
I am not sure if it is worth it to upgrade the Atom even if it could be done without considerable soldering experience. Unless you are a tinkerer, of course
There are a myriad of issues that could come about with such an upgrade in a tiny chassis as this one. Cooling could be inadequate (unless the TDP of the incoming CPU is lower).
You can swap out the wireless with an Intel WiFi 5300 as demo'd in this thread by TheRing. -

Amazon.co.uk, if you can wait a couple of months.
I've got something similar, just left of centre. They only show up under certain conditions and I decided not enough to merit trying to get a replacement.
John -
I guess not everyone sees it as a problem or a weak spot. I certainly don't. If the hinges were poor quality it would be a different story.
Actually Notebookjournal gives the NC10 one of the highest ratings for build quality, and they see the hinges as an advantage because it's possible to open it with one hand.
http://www.notebookjournal.de/tests/samsung-nc10-winchester-679/2
Is possible. I've read more problems on dutch boards. One workaround that was mentioned is not using WPA2.
I think this a weak spot of the NC10, the Atheros reception and connectivity is mediocre with some routers. I now understand the people better who upgraded their wifi card.
I'm debating upgrading to an old Intel 2200BG. -
I need some help. I recently bought my Samsung NC10 from Newegg. At the same time I purchased the Samsung TruDirect DVD player. I have not been able to load the software that comes with the DVD player. I get an error message that says that Trudirect can not be loaded onto a system with a screen resolution smaller than 1024x768. I understand from other comments that the Samsung SE-T804m should be compatible with the NC10. How do I get around this problem? I have not been able to play commercial DVD's without the software loaded.
-
Try VLC player, that should play DVDs fine.
-
What is a VLC player?
I found it on the web. I am downloading it now. Assuming that solves the problem, I would still like to load the software that came with the DVD player. -

Did the LG GSA-E50L rwork with one or two USB Ports?
-
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
I can't open my NC10 with one hand. It is stiff over the first ~15 degrees.
Try setting the display to 1024 x 768: Go into the display properties > Settings > Advanced > Monitor and deselect the Hide modes that this monitor cannot display. Then, on the settings page select 1024 x 768. The whole desktop will scroll vertically, but that should trick the software into believing you have 1024 x 768.
One USB port.
John
PS: I just noticed this cheap slim external burner at Amazon.co.uk . -
What tool do you all recommend for cleaning between the keyboard keys? I can very much see dirt and more dirt getting under there. Gross.
I'm going to buy a case/messenger bag for this laptop as well. -
Here in the netherlands cheap USB DVD writers are showing up for 29.95. That's less than half the price of an LG burner. Word is that they're good.

Hi guys,
Just ordered mine.
I was wondering if anyone of you heard about the latest notebook from Toshiba (NB100)
I am thinking of buyng another notebook for the wife, I was out yesterday and I actually spotted the little Toshiba, I am still in favour of getting the Samsung, still I would be grateful if anyone can advice me if is any better than the Samsang NC10.
I cant link the URL because of my low post counting, Comet store are selling it for 273 quids
Thanks -
According to the reviews I've seen Samsung NC10 is way better than the Toshiba. Notebookjournal.de is one of them.
-
Thanks.
I would have thought so.
I guess I just go for another one.
And while I am at it
Does any one know if the UK models have the 3G sim card options on them? As some people claim it doesn't have one.
I would have thought being so portable should also make sence to have that option.
Thanks. -
Phil, that's a combo drive, right? I don't think that's a DVD burner, just a CD/Re-Writer/DVD Reader. That would explain the low price.
-
Well the salesguy said it does burn DVDs, the website says it doesn't.
I'm not sure. I'll try to find out. -
Hi again.
Since this is IMO the best forum for the samsung NC10, I would like to ask another question.
Would it be able to download the nero software?
Sorry for many stupid questions.
Cheers -
You could download anything, but I've got a feeling you mean something else.
As long as you're not talking about illegal downloads we can discuss it here.
PS. I dislike Nero for the amount of bloatware and registry changes it makes. I prefer something light like CD Burner XP. -
Yeah of course that is what I meant.
Good to know, I will check it up.
Cheers -

There's no 3G support at the moment. Something I read somewhere suggested that we might see the NC10 getting sold as a 3G bundle. I don't know who would sell them. Maybe the service providers. At the moment Samsung are having no problem in selling all the NC10s they can make. They will leave the 3G version until demand slackens in the hope that half the NC10 owners buy another, with 3G onboard. At the moment I would, if I get a 3G modem, opt for a USB version so that I can easily swap it between computers.
You would do better to look for a retailer who still has the OEM version of Nero 6 and will sell it along with a flash drive or other cheap piece of hardware. Some burners (such as the LG) come bundled with Nero.

Can't decide btwn the white and blue, does anybody have real pics of the blue? and is the inside of the blue glossy like the lid?
TIA -
Simple way to get some extra screen real estate: choose the windows classis theme.
-
Was just about to jump on a White NC10 off of Newegg for $469 shipped... and they raised the price to $499!! I know it's only $30 but that makes it $50 when you count in a 2GB ram upgrade. Is $550 really worth it for the NC10?
-
No 3G yet on the UK models.
-
@MrDistubed
You can get the NC10 for 510 - 30% off from ebay using live.com cashback.
500+ is not worth for any netbook, IMHO -
Amazon has better deal ~ 475 with free shipping
or use cashback 30% (currently) off ebay -
btw, the 1002HA eee pc is up for sale on ebay for $499
It looks very professional and worth a look.
with 30% cashback, it's definitely a steal. -
They did that once before, marked it up to $499, then the next day it was back to $469. It will be back to $469 in a day or two. I'm waiting until they're back to $469 and put free shipping on the blue one, like the white one has, or I find a better deal.
I just did a quick search for NC10's on eBay, and they're running $550-$600 or more. What is this 30% off eBay deal everyone keeps talking about? -
To those interested in accessories for the Samsung NC10, I picked up a few goodies over the past week or so.
1) Case: Case Logic PLS-9
http://www.caselogic.com/7_10_laptop_sleeve/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=126781
Saw Case Logic's new line of laptop sleeves, so I jumped on this one designed for 7-10" netbooks. It's made of stretchy, plush neoprene and is very soft on the inside. Fits perfectly, and looks great. Comes with a single front pocket for a mouse and thumb drive.
2) External DVD Drive: Samsung SE-S084
http://www.samsung.com/ca/consumer/...ives&subtype=dvdwriter&model_cd=SE-S084B/RSBN
A basic 8x, USB-powered, tray-loading, no-frills (no lightscribe) external DVD drive. Comes with a cable that occupies 2 USB ports (not AC adapter capable). The manual seems to suggest that you might be able to get away with 1, but it's definitely not recommended. The box lists specs including a 160ms seek time and 2MB of buffer memory.
After plugging in the device, it was detected immediately by my NC10, and initial tests show that it works fine reading burned CD-R (hp), DVD+R DL (Memorex), and DVD+R (Verbatim) discs. Additionally the drive successfully boots to any bootable CD/DVD disc, allowing for OS in/reinstalls.
3) Mouse: Logitech VX Nano
http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/mice_pointers/mice/devices/3271&cl=us,en
By far the biggest shortcoming of the NC10 is the touchpad, so an external mouse is a must for me. Given the NC10's lack of vertical real estate, I figured scrolling would be a given--hence my selection of the VX nano with Logitech's unique fly-wheel (hyper?) scrolling. You can engage the free wheel to spin/scroll through documents quite rapidly. It's also helpful that the RF receiver is very slim, allowing me to keep it attached to my NC10 continuously.
I'd be happy to field any questions. Also I have a few more photos, but I was unsure of how to best post them, out of respect for the slower-loading computers (I didn't want post a wall of pics) -
Thanks for the tips on accessories. I purchased the case logic netbook sleeve. Also, I want to thank all the others who helped me figure out how to get my DVD software loaded onto my Samsung NC10. Everything seems to be working well. I definitely like this machine although I found a mouse is a must. Mitch

Re: nero, my Samsung SE-T084 slim external dvd writer came with a trimmed down, yet very functional, version of nero.

Does anyone know when NC10 Black will be released in USA?
I've been waiting for the black one for a while already.. =( -
Dog gone it!!
I wasn't even in the market for a netbook -- but all the rave reviews about this little box have me thinking twice... Especially since I can't find a "full-sized" notebook to meet my needs at the moment, I might consider the NC-10 just to scratch my itch for a new portable...
