I will be out of action for medical reasons in a few days and don't know when I will be back home. It could be a couple of weeks, it could be longer. The rules in this apartment say I'm supposed to leave everything unplugged when I'm gone.

I keep it plugged in all the time, but only plug in the power strip when I actually use the laptop. Lightening has struck this building 3 x while I lived here, once right beside my window and I've lost a few things. I unplug everything important unless I am using it. I use the battery manager on the laptop which keeps it at 80% capacity.

I've looked online and in the user guide but don't see anything about it being turned off and unplugged for long periods. Is it ok? Do I have to take the battery out? I would rather not have someone else take it and keep it plugged in, not a good option.

    Appreciate your advice.

    Hi Sue, welcome to NBR.

Leaving it unplugged should not be a problem, particularly not if it's only 80% charged (or even less). That is indeed the best way to keep the battery in good shape.

I hope whatever medical situation turns out well.

Thank you for this information! That's a relief. I love my laptop and want to treat it well. The 80% level is something the battery manager handles. I have no idea when I will be back, but hopefully two or three weeks.

I have an excellent surgeon and am going to a top notch hospital so I am expecting very good results.

Thank you for the good wishes and welcome! I just found your forum and plan to come back when I am back home and learn to use my laptop better. The advice is very much appreciated.

I can confirm that a few weeks should be no problem but some notebooks can drain their batteries over a few months.
