I'm assuming the battery is a goner but perhaps I'm wrong.

I bought a Samsung NP780Z5E refurbished from Cowboom.com. It just arrived today and it looks practically brand new. Try to turn it on and nothing. I thought perhaps they turned off the battery before shipping it so I went ahead and plugged the power adapter into the laptop and it turned on. Seems to operate fine outside of the battery issue. The battery indicator says the laptop is plugged in but not charging. Unplugging the device will abruptly turn off the computer. I thought maybe I just needed to do some updates but when I went to try to update I get a warning message about the battery. Right now I'm not sure what to do... replacement battery is 120 bucks or so. I believe I could get a full refund, I'd really like to keep this laptop though. Any advice?

I just talked to them. They offered me a partial refund of $60. I took it as I can put that towards the battery. In hindsight, I think maybe I should have held off. Now I'm worried, what if it isn't the battery but instead it's a larger issue? In that case I might be screwed. I'm going to try and pickup the replacement battery ASAP. If the problem still persist I will try and get a full refund minus the partial refund. If they don't give me that... well, idk, maybe paypal can help me out with that.

Edit: On note about partial refund, I feel like they probably knew the battery was dead or that it was an issue. They offered me that refund quick and didn't ask any questions.

Edit: I've only found 1 website with a replacement battery. No idea if this website is legit. Here is the website laptopbatteryonline.net, the other website I'm looking at is laptoprescue.com, this website says any battery, any model for 60 bucks. It seems kinda far fetched. I can replace the battery myself right?

Edit: Looks like I'm screwed. These websites look too risky. I can't believe this. Really wanted to keep the laptop but the situation is basically hopeless, going to request RMA from cowboom.

You'd better find a local shop where they sell suitable batteries and/or a notebooks using same batteries and kindly ask to let you test your notebook. If battery works, just order a cheaper and/or long-life battery off ebay. There is nothing tricky in replacing battery, how about you try pulling it out right now and see if notebook works or not with AC power cord plugged.

I would definitely open it up and check that the battery connects properly -- or that there even is a battery there.

How old is the computer? Samsung give a 12 month warranty from the date you will see on the BIOS screen.

HWiNFO or Battery Bar will provide info about the battery, including the wear. Check what is reported.
