    Hi All!

I just purchased the NP40X5J and digging it so far! Question though... Does anyone know whether you can install a 2nd SSD onto this ultrabook and if so, are there any directions on here?

    Thanks!! :)

    Hey Guys!

I've been following this laptop since CES since it seemed like the perfect laptop for me since I will be heading off to College in the Fall. Anyway I've been monitoring this thread since a few months ago and i'm wondering if this laptop (NP940X5J with the Touchscreen) will be coming to Canada anytime soon meaning before September. I really only have interest in this laptop as I have not found any other competitors.

Your help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Check back up through this thread. Some versions of this notebook have an empty M.2 slot and some have an empty space on the mainboard where the slot should be. We haven't figured out why Samsung decided to save a few cents on the manufacturing cost by removing a very useful feature.

Samsung's SW Update software / driver database lists NP940X5J-K01CA and NP940X5J-K02CA so search for those. I can see several listings.

Aside from the MacBook Pro Retina (which is 0.5 lbs heavier and is not optimized for Windows) there is no other competitor in its class.

What's wrong with the US version?

Go get it, you won't regret it!

Hey man, I'm right there with you !!
I see this model on Samsung's Canadian website, but still NO STOCK in any stores anywhere.
My guess is that it will, one of these days, suddenly (and quietly) just pop up on the Future Shop / BestBuy sites.
I check almost daily to see who will be selling it - to no avail.

My two beefs with this still yet-to-be-owned device, are:
    1. they chose to equip it with a puny 256GB SSD, when they could have done the decent thing and used a 512GB SSD.
    2. they chose to NOT install a second SSD slot (which would at least allow you to install your own secondary SSD to compensate for the inadequate 256GB SSD)

So now lets (hope) that by some miracle, Samsung "does" in fact, install a second SSD slot on the motherboard - in the Canadian models.
That alone will at least mitigate any storage woes that those of us (like me) who have significant storage requirements for multimedia files.

"Here's to hoping for the best !! "

My NP930X5J (US Version) came with an empty second M.2 SATA 3 SSD slot. I now have 768 GB SSD storage.

2nd day of playing with my laptop... Does the 3 finger gesture not work on windows 8.1/ or just on this laptop? IE on the mac, you can swipe left or right with three fingers and it would go back or fwd.

    Thanks!

Thanks John, I'll start searching for that, thanks!

I didn't think there were any other competitors, and the only problem with the US version is that I cannot get my hands on that either haha. Thanks for the help huberth!

I'm okay with the 256GB drive since I have an external hard drive, but I see your concern. Adding a second SSD would be nice. But good luck to you!

I also bought 3yr coverage which was immediately billed and paid. I could get the credit but it would be more hassle than I am willing to make.
    Thank you for the advice.

I have those gestures on my older Series 7 with Elan touchpad in Win7, Win8 and Win8.1. But Samsung changed to a different touchpad on these models, and it seems there is still potential for significant improvement in its drivers. Hopefully that will come.

    Hi everyone!

I have a quick question. I have a thinkpad yoga that broke and I would like to used the SSD from it for my 2014 ativ book 9

According to the manual, it is a 256 gb sata 3 ( RTPW1230_ThinkPad_YogaUltrabook)

It also has an i7 processor.

    1) Can i use the 256 gb and i7 processor in my i5 samsung ativ book 9?

    2) Do you have any recommendations for a 256/512 GB SSD for ativ book 9?

    3) If you were to exchange the original SSD, can you fix this in a few hours? (would a noob like me be able to exchange it?)

    4) How do you back up the files from the original SSD to the new SSD?

    5) Will there be any issues with the switch?

Thanks a lot! I am a noob when it comes to PCs so please bear with me :)

Probably the ssd you could if it's M.2 and the right length but the processor is apart of the board so that can't be removed unless you know remove and solder on a chip which I don't know anyone that could get that to work.

where will you buy at the states? (which stores sell it) or ur ordering through online retailer? what about the warranty to canada?

is the i7 version worth it vs the i5 (how much more performance)?

lastly, is there a way to upgrade ur own regular 2.5 ssd to this laptop? i mean to replace it, not add one new. is samsung evo ssd 500gb a m2 type? what is a m2 type ssd..

Use the notebookcheck benchmark list to see the performance and then decide if it is worth the money.

Some versions of the NP930X5J / NP940X5J have an empty second SSD slot (it was one of the features specifically mentioned when the notebook was first shown at CES) but some versions have an empty place where the slot should be. The notebook uses an M.2 SATA 2280 SSD. There's no version of the EVO in this format. The Crucial M500 / M550 is the only one currently available in the 500GB size range but it's challenging to tame its idle power consumption.

A Samsung 1TB M.2 is in the pipeline but whether it will officially be released into the retail chain remains to be seen.

SW Update just popped up with TouchPad driver Version 1.10.0.0 (Size: 13.4MB) PS: (I am running Windows 7)

I installed it, but I am not sure if it makes any difference...

    (Also Wireless LAN Driver 17.0.5.8)

Thank you for sharing this. I'll be very interested to hear what changes they made.

I take it this is for Win7, correct? I still don't see Touchpad driver version 1.10.0.0 in SW Update when using Find Model (I don't have X5J myself). But I do see version 1.9.0.0 under Win7 drivers, and assume the 1.10.0.0 you got is the update to that. But still no Win8.1 drivers in SW Update (that I can see).

    The first slide

    http://pics.computerbase.de/5/8/3/7/8/4.jpg

lists two models: the SM951 and the SATA SSD (Ultrabook). The latter should be compatible with the X5J. While the extra speed of the SM951 would be nice to have around, I'd willingly settle for the SATA version. In fact, the difference isn't likely to be obvious under everyday usage.

By the way. I just checked the UK versions in SW Update and would note that (i) both Windows 7 and 8.1 drivers are offered and (ii) the User Manual was updated on 16th June. The latter gives me a little hope that the notebook might yet show up in UK. Perhaps they were holding back until a few issues had been fixed.

John, I think the "SATA SSD Ultrtabook" in the 2nd column is just listed for comparison to show how much faster the SM951 is (the 3rd column showing the difference).

You might be right, but why state "Capacity 1TB" when no 1TB M.2 SSD is currently available?

John, I think you are right. They couldn't be referring to a higher capacity version of the PM851 M.2 SATA 6.0Gb/s SSD for example, because the PM851 has an idle power of 50 mw whereas the "SATA SSD (Ultrabook) 1TB" they mention has <10mW (wow!)

anyone can comment if the warranty applies to canada while purchased from usa (ending in 02US instead od 02CA)?

so from my understanding, the drive they embbed into this laptop is a m2 ssd type, and the expansion slot is also the m2 type. anyone knows which version does give the additional m2 slot?

You will have the standard international warranty cover.

You need an M.2 2280 SATA drive such as the Crucial M500 / M550.

    thanks guys.

here is another question. the 13.3 in version has a higher resolution 3200 vs 1920. if i want to plug these laptops to an external monitor 24 inches , which laptop display will display a larger screen for multitasking on the external monitor?

can the 3200 resultion of 13.3 while plugged to an external 1920 monitor be able to display the same screen as the laptop?

If you choose Duplicate mode, you will be running at the lowest resolution of the two displays (1920x1080, if that's what your external monitor is, and if the AB9+ is running 3200x1800) and the image will be stretched on the higher res display (in this case your AB9+). You will get the same display on both, but it will look ugly on the higher res display.

If you choose Extend mode, you will be running each screen at its native resolution, which will provide the best picture quality and make full use of each. The external monitor will extend the desktop space (in Desktop mode) or provide an alternative display (in Metro mode).

You can also choose to use only the external monitor or (of course) only the laptop LCD.

You cycle through these modes with Fn-F4 or by selecting "Screen resolution" from the Desktop right-click menu -- where you can also move the external monitor's desktop area when running Extend mode.

This is a new "feature" of Chrome, and is designed for facilitating the use of mice. Horizontal scroll now only works with the shift key held down, I believe. So this is not an issue with the touchpad of the notebook itself. (Although if it's Elan I'm sure it has its own problems.) Try switching to Chrome Canary and see if that brings back your horizontal scroll. This has been my solution, and then I use IE for everything that Canary has issues with (since it's being constantly developed).

Thanks screamingtrees, horizontal scroll works great now. Guess Chrome isn't updated to the latest version on my NP900X4C which is still using horizontal scroll fine.

    Wow excellent post.

Is external monitor mode only as good as duplicate?

Will the native external monitor display quality at 1920 looks the same as it is plugged by desktop a video card at 1920?

For those thinking of upgrading their SSD, someone has just put a Transcend 512GB SSD into their NP940X4G.

The system idle power consumption (a few posts further down) looks very good. So this might be an alternative to the Crucial M500 / M550 although the Transcend's write performance isn't as good.

I am not happy with the idle power consumption of the Crucial M550 (see my earlier posts). But it was the only 512GB M.2 SATA SSD available st the time.
I am waiting to hear how the Transcend MTS800 does with the Samsung NP930X5J / NP940X5J

So the Transcend MTS800 is faster than the Crucial 550 and cheaper too, at least on Amazon ($265):

(Note: Amazon also a has very generous return policy and a very simple return procedure.)
Please try it and send us the results! (Measure the battery draw using HWINFO)

Then if I buy the 15 inches book 9, the resolution is 1920 and external will be same resolution. In this case, picture will look identical?

And lastly, with a 24 inches external monitor vs 15 book 9 having both the same resolution , will you be able to display the same amount of info on both screen? Is there a difference in terms of the amount/quality(pictue) of information displayed on a 24 inches external monitor plugged to a desktop computer vs plugged on book 9?

    Yes and yes.

On a larger screen with the same resolution, you will be able to see each pixel more clearly, the picture will appear coarser (though 1920x1080 is still OK on a 24 inch). Conversely, on a smaller screen with the same resolution, pixel density will be tighter, and the picture will appear sharper. But it's still the same picture on both.

The picture on the external monitor is the same regardless of whether it is connected to a desktop computer or a laptop.

Samsung SW update offered a new Intel Wifi Driver for the Intel AC 7260 adapter a week ago.
After installing, I had repeated connection problems when establishing a new WiFi connection, even at home.
I rolled the driver back from 17.0.5.0 to 16.10.05 and so far so good.
I am just mentioning it here in case anyone else runs into the same issue.
(PS: I am running Windows 7)
