The internal photo in the Korean review (link further up this thread) indicates the RAM is soldered. Instead, there is a second SSD slot.

    With regards to:
And watch out for Samsung's practice of the first version having low specs and high price. Then, once they are sold bring in a better spec (and a high price), etc.
I am looking at the i7 with 256 ssd, touchscreen one (the one Adorama has, Samsung ATIV Book 9 15.6" Full HD Touchscreen Ultrabook Computer, Black, Intel i7-4500U 1.8GHz, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, Windows 8.1). I guess I am trying to see what would be released after that could be more appealing, maybe higher storage same price or something like that? Am I better to wait a few months after the release? Thanks.

    Asking myself the same thing.
Also in the US this Version seems at least to become available. Abroad I am looking at the style version (nope, not mine) and the non touch version in i5 and bigger i7 flavors...
I would really like to avoid importing from the US (cheaper though), but I am afraid of the hussle If I might need service in the future... :(

    Hello,
been reading this thread since ativ9 15" seemed the perfect for me - got mine today from Germany. Was skeptic about the display since I couldnt find info about the type of panel. Anyway, I'm no expert but the viewing angels are ultrawide so I'm pretty sure its a PLS. The screen is not full matt but some sort of a semi, with some reflections, but still very pleasant.

Overall I'm extremely satisfied with the build, keyboard and trackpad (things I could assess in a few hours use)

    hope it helps some,

I can remember reading in the very early announcements for this new model - that the storage could go to 1TB.
Does this mean that one could order it with an mSATA SSD of that size ?
What kind of SSD comes with this model, and is there room for more, or would one have to replace the one that's in there due to space limitations inside ?

Thanks for the observations. You can use the Moninfo program to check the display details.

How are you getting on with the German keyboard layout (assuming that it is not what you are used to?).

This notebook uses an M.2 (gumstick) format SSD and includes a second slot. At the moment the supply of these SSDs is limited but 512GB versions are in the pipeline (also here) so a pair of those would give you 1TB.

If Samsung decide to produce an M.2 version of the EVO mSATA SSD then they could put 1TB onto a single stick which would open up the possibility of 2TB in this notebook.

John, I've downloaded Moninfo but it says nothing on the display technology, if you want I can email you the 'asset information'.

As for the German keyboard, I have no problems whatsoever. Honestly I thought it be an issue for me, since I'm from Croatia and we have special characters, but I'm used to typing without looking so I don't even notice something's off. Anyway Croatia stopped importing Samsung laptops, so the other options was UK keyboard, but I didn't want to wait for some vague release date.

Dariusf, I've bought 930X5J-K01, thats an i7, 8gb ram, 256gb SSD. I have a ty camera, but you have very good pictures in that Korean review somebody posted a few pages back.
Anyway, the only minus so far is bloatware - it has a lots of Samsung apps, but also some things like BitCasa (cloud service) etc.

Seems to me like Samsung is dragging their feet on releasing this in the US. I called them about a month ago and the rep told me she thought they were thinking April 15th. I was a bit skeptical as I doubt Samsung would be telling their reps when the product would be released, but my only thinking at this point is they are building up the hype, or possibly a production issue. Who knows!

Once you have the display model code then you have to put it into your favourite search engine to find more details.

NP930X5J-S01US is in the SW Update database which is usually an indicator that it is cleared for production and shouldn't be more than a month away. I would expect some retailers to soon start having more info about the ETA.

Hey there, I've been following this thread for a few weeks and I just decided to join in.

I've been following the ATIV Book 9 2024 Edition relentlessly, and came across a good lead. Around 12 hours ago Samsung launched an official page for the NP930X5JI on their Italian page.

    ATIV Book 9 2014 edition - SAMSUNG

If you can translate the page if your computer allows you, its legit. I'm hoping this hints to a US release very soon. The only reason I want to go for this Ultra book is for its portability and 500 GB SSD capability. Macbooks can do that but the OS isn't my cup of tea.

I'm actually going to college and I'm looking to get a laptop for casual gaming, maybe one large game for example games like: Elder Scrolls, MMos, etc. But mainly for my college needs. I'm a little bummed down over the graphics, which I'll need a good battery life for.

I'm still a bit weary about what to choose, so if any of you know a laptop that's light, good battery (which probably requires has well chip), windows 7 or 8, at least 500Gb HDD or SDD, and an ok GPU then I'll appreciate it. Thanks. Hope the link ai provided was helpful!

You might also want to watch out for the NP870Z5G which includes an Nvidia GPU (see this thread). A US version, NP870Z5G-S01US is on the way.

I've heard very minor details over the NP870Z5G. What's the major difference between the Refresh and the new Book 9 2014 Edition?

Will it have different specs, design? Just curious?

The Book 8 is thicker but has a more powerful CPU as well as dGPU. It also uses 2.5" storage (an SSD is an unofficial user upgrade) and has a bigger battery than the X5J.

There are two versions of the X5J near the bottom of this page and three versions of the Z5G here.

At the moment there is only one version of each listed for the USA and you will have to look for retailer listings to find what specs have been ordered from the factory.

Just curious, since I can't really get an estimate of a battery life for the device... What's the battery life in hours for the Book 8? Typically?

Overall sound quality is very good, the sound feels full and the volume is high. When listening to, say, electronic music, the bass is a bit shallow. Battery life is around 6hours, tough only got a chance to recharge it once so can't say how it will behave further on. The cooling is extremly quiet and the device dosent heat at all at normal use.

Upon further use I can say that the Apple touchpad is still better, I'd give this one a 4. Normal use is great, but multitouch scrolling is not as good.

John, tried googling both PnP ID and Data String, I get nothing and see no other 'codes' which could indicate display name, sorry

See this review. 2 to 14 hours depending on usage.

I would expect the same site to have a review of the NP930X5J before long. They seem to have good links with the German retailers.

Hmmm, thanks. I've been spending a few hours searching notebooks up, andit ended up angering me.

I'm not looking for anything too fancy. Just 8+ battery life, 1080p, 512SSD... I could care less over audio, UHD screens, etc. I took a look at the new Asus Zenbook UX model is high allows 512SSD, but for a price over 2000 and UHD.... Its like seriously?

I'm hoping the 2014 edition will come with a 512 SSD customization, as previously its been rumored up to a 1TB customization. Even if that 256Gb+ slot was HDD I'd be happy. And I'm hoping it comes with a fair price if it does

You can put a 1TB EVO SSD into the NP870Z5G and get yourself both capacity and performance. Or you can put up to 1TB mSATA EVO SSD into the NP900X3G (13.3" matte but FHD) or put whatever M.2 SSD you can find into the second slot of the NP930X5J.

As already noted, higher capacity SSDs tend to push the price of the notebook up while the retail prices are currently dropping almost daily.

You need this mSATA SSD for the NP900X3G (you had linked to a 2.5" drive) and this will replace the supplied SSD. My recommendation is the Samsung EVO mSATA.

Member Enc0re has just posted some NP900X3G internal photos. If you have more questions about that model then use that thread.

I expect a 512GB configuration will cost at least $1800 on launch.

I expect the 512 to be well over $2,000, maybe $2,200 range? Adorama is selling the 256 for $1898 Samsung ATIV Book 9 15.6" Full HD Touchscreen Ultrabook Computer NP940X5J-K02US, and I am guessing that price is going to be pretty comparable to other retailers. Have seen Mac Mall and another with what appears to be w/o touch for $1999ish.

As said earlier in this thread, the ATIV Book 9 2014 15'' is now available in Italy, and it seems that it's really available in online stores with stock. What is more surprising is that the price is significantly lower than in online stores in Germany :

    In Germany :
    - NP930X5J-K01DE (Core i7, 256 GB SSD, 8 GB RAM) : 1599 € with taxes Samsung ATIV Book 9 NP930X5J-K01DE 2014 Edition | Samsung | Notebooks | ARLT Computer

    In Italy :
    - NP930X5J-K01IT (Core i7, 256 GB SSD, 8 GB RAM) : 1230 € with taxes ATIV BOOK 9 -2014- NP930X5J-K01IT 15.6", CORE i7, 8GB, 256GB SSD, W8.1 PRO or SAMSUNG BOOK 9 2014 EDITION - NP930X5J-K01IT - Notebook - Cytech.it

    That's a 370 € price difference !

I could only find one reference in Italy (K01IT) ; I didn't find any reference with Core i5 / 128 GB SSD.

I don't speak Italian nor German, so I may have misunderstood something (maybe on tax included vs tax excluded)... if an Italian guy could confirm.

I sure hope they come out with a 512GB SSD option (at a minimum), as I actually want 1TB.
In this day and age, 256GB is simply NOT enough storage for me.

If it ships with 256GB then you can put 512GB in the second slot to get 768GB. Then when you need more, you can replace the original 256GB with a higher capacity SSD.

I would hope Samsung will decide that an M.2 version of the EVO would sell and that can put 1TB on a stick using current technology.

Yes, you can put whatever capacity M.2 SSD you can find into the spare slot. The aspect to check for is the correct physical size since the M.2 spec covers a bewildering multitude of shapes, sizes and connectors.

Based on the internal photo in the Korean review posted earlier, the M.2 SSDs shown here looks as if they would fit (Samsung have been using the Toshiba M.2 SSD in the NP940X3G so it may also turn up in the NP930X5J).

I assume there will be a RAID 0 option in the bios as well to configure two same size SSDs as one with double the throughput. That would require a reinstallation of the OS though.

I bought the i7 version in a duty free samsung shop while traveling. It has the NT keyboard (English and Korean) which is a little annoying, but I really wanted this and pulled the trigger for $2000. The laptop is everything I expected.

Please share any observations on performance and usage.

Is it cool and quiet? How well does it run on battery. What model is the display panel ( moninfo will give the code).

Also, can you look in the BIOS and see if there is any option to set up two SSDs in a RAID configuration?

    Thank you,

I have not had a real chance to test the battery yet, but I will once I load my software, which is CPU intensive. As of right now, I have only partially charged the battery and have yet to see it run low after toying with the laptop a few hours at a time. The laptop has a solid feel, similar to an Air, and is extremely quiet and fast, of course. The vents are at the screen pivot. I have yet to feel this laptop get hot, but then again I have not run anything too intensive ... yet. Will check the bios later, as I am also interested in expanding the SSD memory.

2 big questions that are deal breakers for me:

    1. Is the screen matte?
    2. Is the scrren IPS/PLS?

Bios indicates that the SSD is connected to SATA port 1. Not sure that means there is a port 0 or port 2, but I see not visible option in Bios, if that means anything.

It is glossy, not matte. Not sure about IPS/PLS.

That's a PCIe version of the M.2 and
the keying in the slot is different from an SATA version. So the question is what type of slot is in this notebook?

So another question for Nonlinear: What model SSD is in your notebook? (We will have to assume that Samsung would use the same interface for both slots).

    Thank you.
While I haven't seen the SDC code previously (SEC is Samsung), the data string is very similar to the display in the NP870Z5G (Samsung 156HL01-801).

Your qualitative assessments of reflectiveness, contrast and viewing angles will be appreciated.

    1. Strange, where did you buy yours?
    2. How are the viewing angles? Do the colors change a lot when viewing from sides/up/down?

International airport in Korea, Samsung duty free shop (they had the i5 and i7 models available). The viewing angles are really good from all directions and I cannot perceive any change in color, but I want to try that with a video. Have to run now - will check in later.

I'm curious whether that second SSD slot actually exists. Is it possible to check? See if you can see it, that its actually there (_@ bit oaranoid here). If it does my 500GB requirement is fullfilled. The SSD might not be so easy to find, but it would definitely help!

I'm Also curious to when the US version Is to be released. Samsung has released a 2014 edition page on their Chinese and aitalian website. And the product is already out, since Nonlinear now has his. And its already the end if April... So I find this ridiculous to not be released.

Yeah, from the specs sheet the 178 degree viewing angles, so it is IPS/PLS, but an anti glare screen is mentioned:

According to this site the model of SSD uses the SATA interface. While the PCIe interface is faster, not many users would notice the difference. Most of the benefit of SSDs comes from the near instant access times.

The Samsung factsheet issued at the time of announcement stated dual SSD. Given that they opted for soldered RAM (I hope it it is a dual channel DDP package) perhaps someone thought it a use for the spare space to add a second SSD slot (and at the time of design they probably didn't know that Samsung's SSD people were about to launch a 1TB EVO SSD).

And here is the English language User Manual.
