    Hi all,

I've been trying to use the internal modem on my laptop but it doesn't seem to be responding to anything. When I query the modem under the diagnostics tab under device manager it says 'the modem failed to respond' where normally it gives a full update on the status of the modem.

To try to fix this I tried uninstalling the drivers and then letting windows pick up the device again when I booted back into Windows. But it does not even find it. Even when I try and install the drivers for the modem in the Q210 available on the samsung website it doesnt' complete the installation but hangs half way through.

Does anybody have any idea what I might be doing wrong???

    cheers

    Brad

Are you 100% that your Q210 includes an internal modem?

Samsung (and other manufacturers) do not include modems for computers sold where dial-up internet is falling out of use.

The first place to look is the label on the box. See the attached example. However, that is not infallible - the Q70 I received (and the rest of the batch) lacked the wireless card. Samsung's published specs for your particular model number are another source of info.

Hmmm. Valid point. That didn't even cross my mind.

I've checked the box and it doesn't have a sticker like you mention.

The specs off the samsung website says that it includes a V.92 Modem while the specs from the distributor I bought it off doesn't even mention the modem (these specs are slightly more summarised though).

Do you know of any dos or windows commands which can test for the presence of a modem? I've also had a look in the bios and there isn't any useful information in there.

    thanks.

You can look in the BIOS. The info screen may list the modem. You can also check if there is any option in the BIOS for enabling / disabling the modem.

Otherwise, Device Manager should list it, either as the modem or as an unrecognised device.

The fallback is to contact Samsung support and ask them to check the specs for your model. Samsung don't always get it right in what they publish. In UK (and maybe other countries) there is a contact Samsung option on the FAQ pages. They usually respond within a working day.
