thanks, what about the graphics card? Is there a way of making the fans always on,(ntune cant control them) as its when the fans speed up, it gets noisy and thats the reason why i cant use in lectures

I've attached my Q310 (the 2.4ghz 320 GB HDD version) temperatures taken using HWMonitor 1.11.

I have no idea if my temps are good or bad though. Anyone able to shed some light on that?

    Hi.

The Cpu and Gpu are a little high for that usage, your not blocking the vents on the bottom are you.

it's entirely possible. I didn't even notice that there were any until just now. The surface they are on isn't exactly the best.

I guess I'll try it again after I shut down and the laptop cools down and i keep it on a flat surface for a while.

just tried using it on my lap, and the way they have positioned the grills underneath you have to put the laptop on one leg nearly and it now feels like its going to sleep, but i get the same temps as when i put it on a wooden board

    Hi.

why they dont put the air intake on the side, instead of the bottom, it would not get blocked then, air in one side and out the other.

    It must be possible.

I always wondered why they couldn't have slits in the keyboard, or in the space between the keyboard and screen. Surely this part of the laptop will never get blocked.

Vents on the front, so the HDD gets a bit of cooling airflow is one option. Ventilated keyboards make it easier for spilt drinks to get to the electronics.

didn't say you did lol, just wondered. Do ssd's get hot? If they dont the one vent on either side would probably enought wouldn't it?

My temps goto 62C last night at idle and the fans didn't come on for ages, and then writing a letter in wordpad the temps went to 65C, and then really basic web browsing and a few seconds later thetemps rise to 70C and the fans come in very often

    edit:
just got my new q310 and the temps goto 59 where the old one got to 62 so no difference really, the only difference is the fans are a bit more quiet

That depends on your definition of overheating. Temperatures of up to 75C are not overheating but are warmer than some people would like. At the same time, people like no fan noise. The only way out of this dilemma is to avoid dedicated GPUs.

according to the cooling central thread on this forum the gpu danger zone is about 90C but the main problem that i had was i couldn't stand the noise of the fans, even my replacement does my head in sometimes as for no reason the temperatures go up when browsing simple websites, and then the fans have to come in.

Again im starting to think its the p8600 processor that causes the higher temps as the q210's have the p8400 processor and they are fine.

Just managed to get some time to post some temps of my Q310.

It does get a bit on the hot side from time to time but I think I am just going to have to live with it. I was watching a DVD the other day and the air coming out from the fan was pretty hot.

I've attached screenshots of temps at startup, after 30 minutes idling (I just moved the touchpad every now and then to keep the display on), web browsing for 30 minutes, and then another 30 minutes idling.

I really regret trying to update my BIOS.
    Heres what I did:
    Download the latest version,
    Run it,
    Reboot...
Then it wouldn't start Vista, it would show the little loading bar for a second then flick to a blue screen for a split second. I tried several time in normal mode and safe mode, then I let Samsung replace all the essential Windows files with hopes that would fix it, but nothing. Had to reinstall from scratch :(

After this palaver there was still a couple of positives, screen flicker has gone and its a lot tidier now.

But I'm never ever, ever doing a BIOS upgrade again... ever

    Hi.

I had a problem with a BSOD on boot-up after flashing the BIOS 07

It turned out to be a problem with AHCI in the bios being on Auto , it needed to be tuned to enable for Vista or Disable for Xp , it`s something to do with the SATA mode.

I don't quit understand it , but have a look at the thread below

thanks to Andy who knows a lot about AHCI

    Hi.

You got a 62c gpu temp from just browsing the net, I get 43-47c on my Q210 , how hot does your gpu get when running a game??

I would love to know why the Q310 gpu runs so hot!!

    Hi.

Did you notice some BIOS downloads are marked Vista and some Xp/Vista , thats where the problem lies with the AHCI setting , the Auto setting gets the selection wrong and causes an BSOD.

I've got the P8400 model. I wonder if it is something to do with how well the heatsink is attached to the GPU.

Basic web browsing should not put a lot of strain on the video card. It's ridiculous!

I haven't tried undervolting yet but might give it a go. What needs to be undervolted. The CPU, GPU or both?

    Hi.

RMclock the program used to undervolt the CPU does not fully support the P8400 as it requires an 8.5x multiplier for max performance and RMclock only supports 8.0x so you will only get 2-2.1ghz not the full 2.26ghz

Also undervolting cannot decrease idle temps and it can actually cause them to increase as the RMclock will use some cpu power!

    Rergards

I wonder, because the CPU and GPU kinda share a heatsink, if it would be beneficial to underclock and undervolt the CPU to get more of an OC out of the GPU?

I shall test this theory sometime tomorrow or the next day.

Heat isn't always the limiting factor when overclocking..

When I was trying it out my core would max out at 65C or so with 750mhz core, however 770MHz core would give artifacts.. these temperatures are lower than what some people are reporting their idle temps to be!

ATM I can OC to 720MHz with no artifacts and the max temp ever was only 64C.
I suppose its just the chips that just cant handle such high frequencies.

In my case the CPU rarely gets hot enough to make much of a difference unfortunately.

@Tinder: On RMclock its showing the clock speed as 2260MHz. Is it really running at ~2100MHz?

    Hi.

Try running CPU-Z at the same time and you will see the true clock speed! , unless you have enabled option on RMclock that i did not!

    Regards

    John.

PS. I have had my 9200m running at 750/950 without any visual problems.

RMclock can't handle the half multipliers on CPU speed so if you are running RMClock then 2100 is the limit. You would need a stopwatch to see the difference in performance.

I brought a cooler but it isn't really helping to increase OC, just keeps it cooler.

Are you actually playing on those settings and has anyone hit the 3k boundary on 3Dmark06?

    Hi.

My 3dmark06 score is the same as pillowshot, at 750/950

But i will not be using this setting often, as you dont know how hot the memory chips are getting as they dont have a sensor.

I use 750/850 if i need a little more power in a game!

Is there any kind of software, which can control fan's speed? I also don't like my Q310's temp. Maybe any software can correct fan's preferences...

During surfing Internet - about 48-53 degrees CPU and 53 GPU. However, I think it's rather high. There are no any options in BIOS unfortunately :(
