I have a 3 yr old Q330 laptop which until recently has been great.

However, over the past week it's crashed 3 times.

What actually happens is that the screen suddenly goes black then after a few moments web pages etc return but in a narrower screen resolution ! On both sides there is a black border. The font is also far too big. Soon after the black screen returns for good.

I've run tsk mgr but nothing shows up on applications.

I've carried out a full system scan using Bitdefender but no infected files were discovered.

Any idea as to what is happening and how to sort it out would be much appreciated.

My initial thought for a computer of that age is that it is overheating. While it is unusual to a computer to recover, rather than crash, I think this is worth checking.

Install HWiNFO, enable sensors, and see what the temperatures are doing under load such as wPrime. If they get over 90C then there's cause for concern and it is time to clean the cooling system.

If the temperatures are OK then MalwareBytes and Spybot S&D are two other packages that check for nasties.
