I've just got a Samsung Q35 (love it!) but i cant get the card reader working, ive installed that latest drivers but no matter what i do i get the error 'The disk in drive X is not formatted, would you like to format it now' even when i dont have a card inserted!, ive tried with three different SD cards.

The same cards work fine in an external usb card reader but cant get the internal card reader to work.

    Device manager shows

'Ricoh xD Picture card Disk Device' under 'Disk drives',

'Ricoh Memory Stick Host Controller', 'Ricoh MMC Host Controller' and 'Ricoh xD Picture Card Host Controller' under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.

'SDA Standard Compliant SD Host Controller' under its own heading (Secure Digital host controllers)

Can anyone help me with this?

    Thanks!

Which operating system and what type/capacity SD card?

In my experience Vista supports SDHC on the Q35 but XP doesn't, so if you have XP and more than 2GB card then it might not work. However, Microsoft recently issued this hotfix which might change that.

Thanks for the clarifications. I'm a little puzzled by this. The devices you are reporting sound OK. For some reason the SD shows up as a different device.

I would try uninstalling those devices (right click on them in Device Manager and select Uninstall) and then let Windows redetect them after rebooting. This should flush out any driver problem.

    I'm short of other suggestions.

We will have to wait for a Q35 owner to drop by.

I've got a feeling the card reader is knackered.

You could try looking into the socket to see if any of the contacts are touching. If must be quite complicated inside (and difficult to fix if you do see a problem).

When working the card readers are convenient but not that fast. See this thread. This Sandisk USB-SD adaptor was the best of the bunch I tested.

Its definitely making contact, ill probably get a pcmcia card reader as i cant think of any other use for the slot anyway (other than extra usb slots which can be rectified with a hub or a sata controller card which wont really get regular use anyway)
