What is the model number of the drive (check in Device Manager)?

Thanks. That drive should definitely be able to write to CDs and DVDs. I think all that you can do is to check and carefully clean the len(es). I believe that the drives use different lasers for reading and writing. If that doesn't work then is the computer still in warranty? A few years back I got a replacement burner (also a TS = Toshiba Samsung) for a Samsung notebook by dealing directly with the TS support people.

Do you mean the "burn to disc" option is missing when you right click on the drive in Windows Explorer.

If so, something worth trying is to right click on the optical drive in Device Manager and select Uninstall. Then restart Windows and it will redetect the drive and hopefully fix any screwed-up settings.
