My samsung R20 now displays everything at a very dull fade. Rendering it unusuable.

The hinges are very loose. Could this be connected? I've tried getting out the screws but I've had no luck..

What could be causing this am I on the right path here?

    Thanks,

Do you mean that the display is not very bright? I assume that you know about using Fn+ the up and down arrows to increase and decrease the backlight brightness.

This could be a backlight problem. The display uses a miniature fluorescent tube which gets dimmer as it ages. Alternatively, the backlight may go off, which usually means that the inverter (which provides the high voltage for the tube) has died. Loose hinges should not affect the backlight brightness.

The last two years has seen a steady migration to LED backlighting which is more power efficient and reliable, but this doesn't help fix your problem.

Thanks for the information John. I know about the Fn+ up and down arrows already.

It's working now. Whatever it is. It appears intermittent. When it gets warm it appears to work well again.

I think I need to email samsung on this one.

    Thank you,

Thanks for the update. The inverter usually works better when it is cold but perhaps the CCFL tube works better when it is warmed up: 20 years ago I had a notebook where the backlight didn't come on in a very cold room.

I can only find phone numbers for samsung. Is this the only route?

Go to the FAQs and there should be a messaging option. I have used this in the past and received replies within 24 hours.
