I recently bought a samsung r540 and on first install it asked me about a partitioned drive. Not knowing much about this i went with the default. It divided the 320GB drive into two 160GB drives for C and D. Having installed MS Office and some other stuff it is all going on the C drive. So what is the D drive for? Can i use it just like the C drive and install programs files etc??

Also will this partition affect the samsung recovery? i.e. if i have to 'recover' i'll get both data an OS from both partitions, as they are both still the same drive?

Just a bit confused, so any help/advice welcome.

    Thanks,

I had an Samsung Q210 and as far as i can tell only your C drive will be recovered, the D will be unaffected, you C drive will be restore to it`s birthday configuration, it`s basically an image of the C drive from when your Samsung had finished installing and setting up all it`s drivers.

Thank you. So for any data files i should still make a manual backup of to a USB stick/external HD or store somewhere like Humyo. Seems to make sense.

    Thanks again.

Anything on you C drive that you want to keep. back up, the D drive should be unaffected by the Restore.

I can confirm that a restoration using the Samsung software will not affect D: In fact, any user backups of C: will be stored on D: (only the initial "birthday" image gets written to the recovery partition). Personally, I change the "My Documents" folder so that is also on D: so there is less chance of losing user data.
