    Hi,

    realise this is getting on a bit as a machine but it's really not enjoying Flash at all these days - everything is incredibly jerky. I've got Windows 7 on it, and according to the Windows experience score my gaming graphics score is 3.5. Next lowest is CPU at 3.8.

    It's got a Core 2 1.83GHz processor, and 2 GB Ram. Can I do/ replace/ buy anything to speed it up when it's playing Flash stuff?

    Thanks very much in advance

    George

    Flash can cause the CPU to heat up substantially. I wonder if it is throttling itself. This can happen if the cooling system is getting clogged up with fluff. You can check CPU speed and temperature and see if throttling is happening by looking at RMClock's monitoring page.

    Another possible reason for the computer to run slow is if the IDE interface has dropped into PIO mode. Check the current transfer modes under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers in Device Manager. You should find one device uses UDMA-5 (HDD) and another using UDMA-2 (ODD). If another is running at PIO then uninstall the IDE ATA/ATAPI controller and reboot the computer. Windows will then reinstall the driver, usually with the correct transfer modes. The usual reason for the computer dropping into PIO mode is problems reading an optical disc. After several read time-outs Windows drops the interface speed.

    Please give feedback when you have checked the above.

    John,

    Thanks very much for your help. I installed the RM Clock software and it has my CPU running at 81 degrees C. I also get a few warning messages saying "CPU core overheat detected, Current CPU throttle: 100%". So it sounds like the first one is maybe a problem?

    On the device manager, under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers I have five listed:
    * ATA Channel 0
    * ATA Channel 0
    * ATA Channel 1
    * Standard dual channel PCI IDE controller
    * Standard dual channel PCI IDE controller
    Double clicking on the first three of these and going to the advanced settings tab gives the following:
    * ATA Channel 0: Ultra DMA Mode 2
    * ATA Channel 0: Ultra DMA Mode 6
    * ATA Channel 1: (Blank)
    * No advanced settings for the last two.

    Do you need any more information? And thanks so much for your help

    George

    Thanks for the info. The ATA settings look fine.

    The problem seems to be that the cooling system isn't doing its job well enough and the CPU is starting to throttle. Probably, the cooling system has picked up some fluff since it was new which impairs the ability of the fan to blow enough air through the system. This thread has some photos that illustrate the possible problem.

    Before you try to dismantle everything, you may want to get one of these and see of you can blast any muck out.

    You can also try undervolting the CPU by following the undervolting guide. Lower voltage = lower temperature.
