Just got the laptop couple weeks ago. But I noticed that this laptop come with 69GB HDD... where is the another 11GB HDD ? Besides, does the mobo support ddr2 667 officially since the ram given is 512MB ddr2 533?

    1. My X60 appeared to have only 86GB on its 100GB hard disk. 3.5GB was consumed by a partition called "Lanstep" which Windows couldn't see. The way hard disks are given nominal capacities means that one never gets the full size, but I was still a few GB short of what I expected. My suspicion is that the HDD (Fujitsu) was under-sized to start with. I cloned the HDD onto a 120GB Seagate and gained an extra 25GB of useable space.

    2. My measurements of the performance of 533MHz and 667MHz RAM are in this thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=69355 . In summary, no real difference because the higher latencies of the faster RAM offset the higher nominal speed. As and when 667MHz RAM with lower latencies is available, there should be a small performance boost.

How did you find out that there was the 3.5gb "Lanstep" partition? What tool did you use to examine the disk...?

    With the whole size thing, and manufacturers using 1000 not 1024, I'd expect a 100gb quoted size to be 95gb actual size. There's still a discrepancy: 86 + 3.5 = 89.5. :(

thanks for the replied. actually the Geforce 7400 GO onboard is 64MB or 128MB ? since I have 512MB ddr2 only, could I set the shared memory manually in order to let system have more ram.

I used PartitionMagic to look at, and modify the partitions. I subsequently copied the whole HDD onto a 120GB Seagate 5400.2 using Acronis MigrateEasy. This also saw the "Lanstep" partition.

I looked on the www for the detailed specs for the Fujitsu HDD in order to be able to check the capacity from the basic data (number of sectors, etc), but couldn't find the data. My underlying and unproven suspicion is that the Fujitsu HDD never had 100GB, except in name.

Well, the disk drive in my X60 is the Fujitsu MHV2100BH. I searched on the Fuji website(s), until I found this (large, PDF) document: http://www.fel.fujitsu.com/home/v3__ftrack.asp?mtr=/support/disk/manuals/m60_product_manual.pdf
... which includes the typical phrase:
It also specified that this disk has 195,371,568 sectors, and 512 bytes per sector, which works out at a total of 100,030,242,816 bytes, which is 93.16GB... So, we still think the formatted capacity should be 93 "real" GB :)

(see page 26 / section 1.2.1 of the PDF file for this information)

Well done for finding that manual, which also shows that the 120GB version (MHV2120BH) has 234,441,648 sectors. SiSoftware Sandra reports that the 120GB Seagate 5400.2 has exactly the same number of sectors, which is also 20% more than for the 100GB Fujitsu HDD. So that does not explain the missing GBs.

I am therefore beginning to think that AV Station does have a partition so well hidden that my HDD utilities can't see it.

Anyone tried lower the laptop vcore via notebook hardware control software? My samsung R65 which based Intel Centrino Duo T2300, can even run 1.66GHz @ 1.1v with prime stable. Now priming 1.66GHz @ 1.05v.

I've been running the T2300 in my X60 with a maximum voltage of 1.05V for several months using the Rightmark CPU clock utility. As a result, my CPU fan never gets above the lowest speed. The problem with Core Duo is that it isn't possible to drop the voltage at minimum clock speed below 0.95V. My previous Dothan Pentium M happily ran at 0.7V at minimum clock, which gave a useful increase in battery running time.
