    Hi,

I've bought a R780 and now I want a second monitor. The laptop screen resolution is 1600 x 900. I can only find 20" monitors at this resolution and I'd like something a little bigger i.e. 22" or 24".

How can I tell what resoutions will be supported on a larger monitor with this laptop's graphics capability?

I don't want to commit to a monitor only to find that the display is not sharp because there's a mis-match between laptop graphics and monitor capabilities.

The resolution you can use on an external monitor is not really related to the resolution of the laptops screen. You will be able to run a much higher resolution external monitor without any problems. If you extend the desktop to the external monitor, you can set the resolutions of the two screens independently. Or you turn the laptop screen off. The only issue you would have is if you want to duplicate internal screen on the external monitor. Then not all the external monitor would be used or it would have to do the stretching.

Having said that, I don't know what the actual maximum resolution the R780 could do. I do know I had it plugged into my 1920*1080 TV via HDMI on the weekend with no problems. I had the desktop extended to this so both screens were in use.
