I know Im kinda bringing this up very late but I purchased my RC512-S02 in the first week of June 2011.The stamp on its base says April 2011 which I presume is the manufacture date. CPU-Z reports that its Intel Series Chipset series 6.What are the odds of my SATA ports failing?
The worst part is that the active ports are 1,4 and 5 according to device manager.
    Its Southbridge is HM65.

That's a little odd, mine shows port 0 active which is my hard drive and port 2 which is my Blu-ray drive.

Is your Blu-ray working? You should have two devices using two SATA ports.

Some manufacturers are "cheating" and finding a way to move both devices to port 0 and 1 which are not affected. This keeps them from having to replace the motherboard.

I have the same CPU w/ CPUZ even though my version is RC512-S01US. Also shows REV_04. I think mine is affected, too. I need to proceed to replace mine. What model did you get as a replacement?

This is what I got from Samsung. Is it true that even though I got the same chipset as B2?
    Anybody knows?

Uh no. The s0-1 are infected as well...

talk to supervisor, they have a policy on this.

They stopped production on the s0-1 BECUASE of the chipset problem. Take a gander of the s0-1 and s0-2.

    Identical systems barring chipset.

Be aware that there's no reliable way to detect whether the chip is buggy without reading the label. Software can still report the B2 stepping when the chip was the debugged version. If the computer was manufacturered in April then it would use the fixed chip.

Well Guys I am out of the Samsung camp.

I decided to return the RC512-S02 I had purchased from Best Buy due to poor support from Samsung on this product.

The computer was a good product and I picked it up at a good price as a open box model.

Unfortunately the support staff although friendly, never seemed to be able to provide good answers to my questions.

I switched to a Sony Viao F22 with basically the same specs at considerable more expense, but the 1920x1080 screen sealed the deal for me.

    Hi all,
I have an RC512-S02 that is shutting down when the graphics card is under heavy load. A variety of games off Steam run fine and the laptop will push out heat, but both Modern Warfare 3 and Skyrim make it shutdown with no warning anywhere from 30 seconds in to 3 or 4 minutes in. Black Ops, Deus Ex HR, others all run just fine. I contacted Samsung and they said I could set it up for service, but if it is determined to not be any kind of hardware failure then the cost will come out of my pocket which I can't afford. I'm in the process of reinstalling Windows right now to see if that will eliminate the problem. Suggestions on how to diagnose if it is indeed hardware failure before I send it out to be serviced?
    Thank you

Describe the shutdown, is it a BSOD? Or just the laptop shutting off like that. Also what were your temps? If you havent been running a monitor program, try HWMonitor or HWinfo and post your temperatures.

most likely the laptop overheated, but there isnt enough info to decide on that. Also unless you arent under warranty, why would it come out of your pocket?

Simply turns off, no warning. I hadn't used monitoring software but will.

I used Samsung Recovery to reinstall Windows from the recovery partition, reinstalled Skyrim and had the same issue, a sudden shutdown.

I wiped the hard drive and reinstalled Windows and now am having trouble with the order in which to install drivers from Samsung's support page to get the laptop back to functional. I installed the INTEL Wireless driver, no problems. Installed the chipset drivers, no problems. Attempting to install the Internal INTEL Display driver, unsuccessful, says this computer is not supported. Attempting to install the External NVIDIA Display driver, unsuccessful, says it requires the INTEL driver to be installed first.

Going to class now, will be back later this afternoon

edit: The Samsung Support guy I spoke to said that, although I am still under warranty, if I send the laptop off for service and they determine the issue to be software (ie the computer simply can't handle these newer, more intensive games, his words (which is total BS since this thing cost $1200 and is 10 months old)) I will be responsible for shipping and labor. If they determine it is hardware failure on some level, it will all be covered by my warranty.

Post a screenshot of everything HWMonitor says prior to launching the game. I know gpu-z logs gpu temps while gaming to a notepad so you can run that to log the gpu temps.

about the warranty, thats bs. Its definently hardware problems after going through a HDD wipe. Ask for Tier 2 support if the 1st guy gives you problem.

Thats just messed up on their part.

    HWMonitor: [IMG]

GPU-Z shows temperature rising steadily from 52 C at 22:44:45 to hovering around 72 C (hitting 74 C) and cutting the machine off at 22:48:41. This is from the point of restarting the computer, turning on GPU-Z, and then starting a new game in Skyrim.

I'm downloading RAGE now for comparison, it ran fine before.

72C is well below the threshold likely to trigger a shutdown for thermal reasons (usually around 100C) but might be enough to cause some other problem to surface. This could be a difficult one to trouble-shoot.

RAGE finished dling overnight, played an hour this morning with AA at 8x with no issues. Ran GPU-Z and played another 10 minutes with all settings maxed, temps hit 76C, 75C seemed like the average. No issues, slightly choppy framerate with AA 16x.

Is it something particular to the engines running MW3 and Skyrim that could be causing the shutdown? I don't understand at all :[

edit: Ran MW3 in 1280x800 with ALL settings at their lowest. Started a new game and didn't make it through the in-engine cinematic stuff at the beginning. Ran for a total of 3 minutes, probably 45 seconds of being in-engine and the temp hit 67C before the laptop powered off. Frustrated beyond words, and not at all convinced that if I sent this to Samsung for repair they would determine it was hardware failure and cover it with warranty. Feel like I got totally ****ed out of $1200 :[

Thank you guys very much for your help and expertise

Also FYI have done all Windows Updates and installed SP1, newest driver for the 525M from Nvidia's page.

try rolling back the drivers for the 525m, I mean I even overclocked my 525m and ran long sessions fine with no problem

it might be the game itself not cooperating. I would suggest rolling them back and checking up with us if it still persists.

You can also look in Event Viewer's System Log to see if any problems are being recorded prior to the shut-downs.

Downloading and about to install the most recent non-beta legacy driver.

I looked in the Event Viewer, and it was a little difficult to navigate, but on the navigation pane on the left, under Custom Views -> Administrative Events, I saw three reports from the EventLog, Event ID 6008, "The previous system shutdown at 12:09:05 PM on ‎11/‎19/‎2011 was unexpected." Not sure if any of the other events are related... There are a bunch of reports from Kernel-Processor-Power that Processors 0 through 7 are being limited by the system firmware. Nothing else really stands out as being related, but not sure if I'm sorting the reports correctly to catch what may be a problem?

edit: Oh I see where you were saying to look, System under Windows Logs, there seem to be more reports surrounding the same number 6008 saying the shutdown was unexpected, but nothing I can discern as related

Older driver seemed to make some progress. Made it through the intro cinematic in MW3 and played for a bit at 1366x768 resolution, got greedy and went into the settings to change the image quality to Native and the computer shut down during the next loading sequence. Gonna try again.

Kept image quality low, played for a while, same shutdown.

--Hey, there it is, checked event log, Error from Source Kernel-Power, Event ID 86, Task Category (83),

"The system was shut down due to a critical thermal event.
    Shutdown Time = ‎2011‎-‎11‎-‎20T15:33:32.218565500Z
    ACPI Thermal Zone = ACPI\ThermalZone\TZ00
    _CRT = 372K"

As far as I can tell that was the only time the system reported the reason for shutting down but there are loads of warnings from Kernel-Processor-Power.

OK! Installed latest Easy Display Manager as per the requirement of the BIOSUpdate utility and installed the latest firmware and I believe that solved the issue. Just got done playing a mission in MW3 with the native resolution and picture quality with everything else off or low and it did fine, pretty good frame rate, and most importantly NO SHUTTING DOWN!

Updating to latest graphics driver again and will test Skyrim and tell you all how it goes.

Again, thank you all very much for your help and expertise, I feel stupid for it being something as simple a BIOS update.

edit: Ran Skyrim for a bit through intro sequence and character creation and the following bits, about 15 minutes worth and everything seems good to go. Thank you guys very much.

    Thanks for the update.

I wonder if there was a BIOS bug which was mis-reading a temperature sensor and triggering shutdown when it should not have.

Hey guys, so here is the start of my story and hopefully someone can help me.

I got a few BSOD's with my RC512 that were DRIVER POWER STATE FAILURE and i just rebooted each time and ignored them (i'm not sure why i didnt do anythgin to address it but i didnt) so my comp seemed fine for a couple weeks (maybe a month?) and just recently i got back into playing arma and had my lap top fully shut off yesterday while in a game, it didnt bsod no notice just clicked off as if i had held the power button. When i rebooted the comp i got an odd samsung screen at startup it then when to the windows "your comp didnt shut off correctly screen choose ur option"
(safe mode options or regular start up) so i tried to hit enter to start normally and it did not work, i tried a few times to go into recovery and it seemed like none of my input devices (keyboard/mouse) are working. So i rebooted let the timer run out on the regular start option and the comp booted fine to desktop. So i try and do some stuff like open start or even just IE and first i can click on anything and when i did get ie to open if i clicked on anything or tried to type it started openeing the edit and help drop downs like a million times a second and finally started opening like 100's of ie windows so i shut it off and havent tried again. So i cant get to recovery i dont have recovery disks, i can't get to safe mode... im tempted to take it in and actually pay for someone to look at it.

    Any ideas?

I'm thinking about purchasing a refurbished RC512 from Best Buy for $749. One requirement that I have is that it support WiDi. It looks like this model does, but I'm concerned because some specification pages I look at list that feature and some don't. And of all the reviews and web boards that I've scanned, I have yet to see anyone mention it. Can someone who actually owns this model confirm that it does have this feature and that it works?

    Thanks!

they recently sold refurbed for 500.. missed out, i cant recall site. if its not to exspensive i would reconmend a year or two sqauretrade.com warranty and google a 30% off code. better safe than sorry.

we used it at my friends house, worked well. but i prefer just using hdmi cable.

you also need an Intel WiFi adaptor. See here. Samsung sometimes put non-Intel WiFi cards into different versions of their notebooks.

Okay i found out it is infact my keyboard on my RC512 that went kaput, I was wondering if anyone knows of a place to order a replacement and if someone has ever replaced the keyboard (the whole fron panel on the rc512) and can tell me how hard/easy it is to do?

    Hi,

I purchased this laptop as a used and they had wiped the Hard Drive and cannot create recovery discs.
I would like to get a set of the discs, my model is the RC512-S02.
If anyone could please help, I am willing to pay for these discs.
My e-mail is [email protected] and I'm in the Northern Virginia Area.

    Thank you!
