I'm having a tough time trying to install Windows 10 onto my 5 year old Samsung RF710 US notebook.

If I try the upgrade option, the initial setup runs ok, but after rebooting the first time, the computer hangs on the Windows 10 logo. I've left it here for over an hour and no change.

I then proceeded to try doing a clean install from a USB -- but the computer won't even boot up off the USB stick -- it just hangs immediately on the same Windows logo.

I verified that the USB stick works just fine on my Windows 7 desktop (which I was able to upgrade without issue).

In all of these attempts, when I remove the USB stick and reboot, the computer displays this error code"

    We couldn't install Windows 10
    0xC1900101 - 0x20017
The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during BOOT operation.

I've also tried playing with the USB settings in my firmware (to enable EFI boot) and also upgraded my firmware to the latest version available from Samsung -- no change.

Has anyone encountered this problem and have a workaround?

    Thanks,

    Steve

Did you try searching the www for discussion of the error code? I found this.

I did do that, but thanks for you link. I tried a few more things some on the linked sites mentioned, but nothing worked. I do believe this is a BIOS firmware issue (and not a pre-existing software issue) as the Windows 10 boot disk can't even boot up the first time directly off the USB drive (and this USB drive works on other computers). I guess I should be asking Samsung for support.

Wow - I was already resigned to the idea that I'd have to wait for Microsoft to fix the ISO -- but this confirms it. Thanks for the update. Oh, and the your link took me to the last page. Here's the link to the first page:

Hmm, does this mean if I disable the onboard LAN/WIFI, I can get past the boot screen? I might try that tonight...

nope.. it means that you will have to physically remove the WIFI Card from your laptop and install Windows 10, and maybe buy a new non Broadcom Card and replace it.

That actually sounds ok to me. I think I'll try that one user's suggestion of installing without the wifi card attached, then installing the specific broadcom windows 10 driver onto Windows before reattaching the wifi card. If it doesn't work, I guess I'm purchasing a new Atheron mini card! Thanks for the help.

I have the same issue on my Samsung RF710. (Windows 8.1 Pro) I tried already a lot of things without success. Did you change your Braodcom Lan card ? Did it solve the issue ?. Is this simple to do ? I am a lafraid to open the cover of my LapTop ?

Ok, first of all, opening up the laptop to remove the broadcom wifi card was a larger effort than I originally thought. None of the back panels designed for easy access to the internals allow you to access the wifi card -- you have to actually remove the entire bottom panel which means removing ~20 screws and then carefully unfastening another ~20 snap joints.

Once the bottom was removed, I could see the wifi card which I then removed easily. I reassembled everything and confirmed that the Windows 10 installation could now continue without any hangups. I tried putting the wifi card back in after I specifically installed the Windows 10 drivers for it, but once I tried to restart the machine (Restart actually shuts down completely then reboots) as opposed to Shutdown (which seemed to just sleep on my machine), Windows would hang again during boot up.

So I removed the card and ordered a new one from ebay (this one has both wifi and bluetooth like the old broadcom card). Once installed, Windows 10 immediately recognized the card and everything was now working.

    Hope this helps...

    Steve

I don't see any overclocking options -- I did see UEFI in the BIOS somewhere (under USB legacy support or something like that), but playing with that setting didn't change anything. I'm afraid the only option that will work is to remove the boardcom card.
