Samsung RV511

Does anyone have this laptop? I saw this recently at Best Buy and it is on sale this week for $599 also the QX410 is on sale for $799. Trying to decide if I should spend $200 more for the QX410. I could not find anything on this forum on the RV511. Here were the specs:

Wow! Over 100 views and not a single response. I am sure someone out there has heard or owns this RV511 laptop.

 

Thanks for the info....however that is the RC512 not the RV511. I know the specs and what the RC512 will offer....just wanted to get an idea on the RV511. I know those specs already but it is always nice to chat with people the have the product.

 

I picked this one up from Best Buy last week and so far I'm happy with it. I'm an IT student and it serves all of my needs. Before getting this I had purchased a Toshiba and was really disappointed with it. It had a HDD safe mode that would kick on whenever the "laptop" moved or was jarred which in-turn I think would interfere with the speakers and create a buzzing noise. There were a couple of other little bothersomes I had with it along with many other reviewers on Best Buys site. (I just checked the site and they have removed that model from the products list...hmmmmm?) Getting this was an even exchange and was within my budget so I feel like I got a pretty good deal. The things I like about this laptop are the aesthetics, it's really sleek (I like the outer case of the QX410-J01 better tho) also the fact that it has raised keys and a numeric keypad. The screen looks great despite a little glare. It's light weight (5.3lbs, 1.4in thin) and has all the necessary ports (A+ on the HDMI port) Occasionally my palm will run across the touchpad while typing hence moving the cursor, but that just needs my getting use to. Also on start up it seems a little slow, I still need to go through the processes and clear out somethings. Compared to the Toshiba getting the RV511 was a win for me. Nearly not as much bloatware and the speakers work just fine. Additionally Samsung promotes your best interest and provides hard drive partitioning and backup protection upon startup. If you have the money for the QX410-S02 I would maybe recommend comparing with other laptops in the price range just to match up specs. But from the looks of it the QX410-S02 is pretty sweet! I know I would just like a larger display for that price. For the QX the pros I see in this laptop are the i5 processor with 3MB cache (2.66Ghz up to 2.93), plenty of memory (maybe expandable?) large hard drive (good for partitioning), LED HD display, NVIDIA graphics card, proclaimed 7 hour battery life (from a 6 cell lithium-polymer battery) All this for a light and easily portable computer I'd say is great deal. The cons: No HDMI port (granted it has the intel wireless display feature) no numeric keypad, no left/right click buttons, small display for the price, for the size of the hard drive it could have 7200rpm, only a .3 MP webcam?, and I think it would look a lot nicer in all silverish/Aluminum styling. Thanks jlab81 for the review. Download a free app called touchfreeze which will freeze the track pad as you type so you are not moving the cursor. Does the RV511 have a aluminum shell like the QX version? Hard to tell from the pictures. Does the RV511 have the quick start like the QX410? I just don't like that wide bevel at the bottom of the screen. I look at it as a 14" screen housed in a 15.6" shell......that laptop is larger than a comparable 14" laptop that is closed. I like the Li-polymer battery better than the Li-Ion because that is what Mac books use and the run time is usually longer. I thought for sure it had an HDMI then I double checked and it does not thats a bummer. I was pretty amazed that there were very little reviews on the RV511.....I think this was released in Europe and made it to the US. Was also looking at the new RC512 but now there has been a recall on the sandybridge intel processors so that is not an option now. That will delay the release of the newest laptops Samsung has as well.

 

If you can, I'd try to see this laptop in the flesh. I have the Q330 and it's fine, but the quality (only the plastics let it down) are not really worth what I paid. I can't imagine the RV511 to be that much different.

 

Samomexo....I have seen the QX410 in person and 3 items that caught my eye the wide bevel at the bottom of the screen, larger profile for the 14" laptop, an so so LCD picture. The colors looked washed out. Hard to justify the $800 price tag for a lack luster display. My Samsung netbook has a better display. Maybe the store QX410 was not tweaked right for the display.

I have never seen the RV511....I will have to check that one out. I amm surprised that there are no reviews or videos on the net to better learn about this RV511 model.

 

Interesting I cannot even find the RV511 on Samsung website? Wonder if this is a discontinued model that somehow BB got and trying to sell.

But yes, Best Buy might be trying to shift some stock! I think it would be a good purchase... however I'd need to see and feel the quality in person.

Judging by the picture, I think it would be on the same level as the Q series. Fine, but not anything well-made.

 

I exchanged two laptops (Toshiba's mind you) before getting the RV511 and I'm really enjoying it! The RV511 does not have an Aluminum case, but it still looks great and feels great! This one does have the quick start feature and I might have done something wrong upon startup, but it doesn't start up as fast as I feel it should. A prompt came up to configure the quick start and I ran the quick start wizard. It was mainly self sufficient, but I dunno I'll have to play with it some more. Another feature I like about the RV511 is the mode selection feature. It has silent, normal, speed mode and speed boot, plus its energy star rated for the green goers out there. The function keys I think are well placed. The brightness is the up/down arrows and volume is the left/right, which make for quick easy use instead of fooling with the F keys. The cherry on top for this model would've been a backlit keyboard. SO yeah go to BB and look it over, hope you'll like it as much as I do.

The Best Buy add for this week says its a Best Buy "exclusive" and marked as a NEW item. Maybe this is a overstocked item from Samsung that BB purchased. Does anyone know when the RV511 debuted? I also love how BB promotes $100 off your laptop purchase with a 2 year "lock in" on the 4G WiMax service. I was told by a rep it's about $40 a month! I'm not a traveling salesman so I have no need for that since I can get wifi at school and pay for a bundle service at home.

 

Yes, I saw that as well. It was $100 for the laptop and $200 off with the WiMax 2 yr subscription if I remember correctly. At first when I saw the online weekly ad it sounded like that was the only way to get the deal. I thought wow that is a catch 22 for sure. I do not want the WiMax. Then when I saw the hardcopy ad I knew there were 2 choices. I think the RV511 was a European model if I remember correctly but not sure why it is not listed on Sammys site. May have to call Samsung on this one.
